Rewarding Repetitive or Bot-Command-Only Comments in the FreeCompliments Community

We’ve noticed an increase in accounts within the community who largely or exclusively post bot commands or brief, repetitive comments. Can these comments be considered spam? By some, yes; by others, no. This was an expected development as we continue to grow, but since our goal is to encourage the proliferation of high quality content, we’re going to make an adjustment to how we reward these types of comments.

Adjustments to Comment Rewards

We’re still going to continue curating and rewarding comments which are repetitive or call out commands only. However, the rewards and curation are going to be very minimal – nearly to the extent of dust. I think this is a fair approach because such comments still provide interaction and value, albeit to a minimal degree compared to other types of comments.

I also recall the case made by @cryptounicorn420 that certain people with various disabilities may have exertional difficulties with writing out more than a few commands per day. Knowing the effort that she places into her own comments, I still think that the effort in a comment should be roughly proportionate to the reward, hence not eliminating rewards entirely even for these types of comments.

Ultimately, we’re going to limit the curation on such comments to 0.1% (in our case, this is definitively a dust vote). Furthermore, while we typically give out 1 HSBI per 10 comments posted within the community (rounded up), our approach to the aforementioned types of comments will be 1 HSBI per 100 comments (rounded down). Frankly, it would take A LOT of these types of comments to earn a noticeable amount of HSBI.

This will still keep in line with our original promise to curate every single comment made within the community (except if it’s blatant spam, illegal, or plagiarized). We’re not planning to change that aspect. We’re simply reweighing the impact of certain comments which some people may consider to be spam.

Of course, I am open to the opinions of all the members within this community, and as you can see, we’re always willing to make adjustments and changes.

For the rewards that will be put out tomorrow, you’ll see the aforementioned changes in effect.

Conclusion

We’re rebalancing our curation and HSBI rewards for repetitive comments and comments consisting only of bot commands! Let us know what you think about these changes.

Dear Community, we've made some adjustments to how we'll be rewarding certain types of comments - repetitive and bot-command-only comments - going forward. Please let me know what you think right here!

Greetings. Thank you for taking my opinion into account. I don't think it's fair that repetitive comments or comments from bots are rewarded. I think that two of the points to take into account when rewarding should be the effort and dedication of the commenter and in the cases in question there is no effort or dedication whatsoever. The fair thing would be "zero effort = zero reward"

I believe the user chooses to use copy and paste comments; or just bot commands; some even try to disguise it using tiny and irrelevant modifications.

I don't see how this type of participation can be relevant to the community.

In my opinion what should be done:

  • curation: total interruption of votes
  • HSBI rewards: establish a maximum ceiling of 1 HSBI for users marked in the list. Thus, regardless of whether the user decides to continue with their practice, they will be discouraged from doing so.

We could even carry out an educational action, warning the user that the use of such a device is considered spam and that if they continue with the practice they will be noted on the list, receiving restricted rewards.

Good Move.

Also, the length of the comment is always to merit of the subject, e.g. if I am responding to a particular context.

Thank you.

Definitely! It is still very possible to have a short, quality comment. It's impressive when a comment can fit a lot into a small amount of space. Most of our monthly winners are not necessarily the longest comments!

That's true and welcoming.

Freecompliments definitely complimenting a myrid of emotions, people in distress, and a beacon of light for those in dilemma.

I don't think that a community on Hive can directly label these two examples of engagement as spam because it shall depend on how they are used.

Firstly, I use the Ecency front end, which allows me to write snippets to insert into posts or comments. I have one snippet prepared for some tip bots. Sometimes I stick this at the end of a comment, sometimes these are the comment on their own.

An example would be if I see a post by a friend that just shows his Actifit progress. He is using that community and he is posting his workout/run. There is not much for me to say here. I could drag out a "Well done and keep training" comment and try make a dozen iterations of it. But really, I have hundreds of notifications to respond to and in order to keep the engagement up and the support up, I need to give him a vote and some support in the form of a bot tip and move on.

Repetitive comments also need to be approached with context. It really depends on where they are used.

If you come across an account that responds to all content posts with a generic reply of how good the post was and how they like it and how this person is amazing, but then copy and pasted it into all their comments they made that day 10x times, this would be considered phony. I would not particularly punish them, but I would not reward that either.

The other repetitive comment style that is bad would be harassment. There was a cooky crazy person spouting their conspiracy theories on Hive some time ago and used to throw out these comments unsolicited all the time. That was a drag and that was abuse.

But one way that I feel repetitive comments can be used correctly is with repetitive posts. There are a lot of Splinterlands and other community-driven Giveaways. You need to comment on the post with your username account and willingness to enter. There is really no need to give a creative answer to these. Someone is hosting a give-away. It is a raffle, a competition and your time and attention is going into the chance to get selected on the random wheel. You don't need to upvote but you can if you want.

There are a good half-dozen or more that I follow on these give ways. A standardized snippet/repetitive comment to join these very samey non-content posts does not feel like abuse.

Just my 2c.

I think that this is a good balance, and that it aligns more with idea and mission of the community. 😁🙏💚✨🤙

Keep in mind that any total payout less than 0.02 (dust votes) is zeroed and no curation or author reward is paid at the 7-day mark. Many users engage with various services that will bump any comment with dust over the 0.02 threshold, but not all.

It may be worthwhile to review the decision in a few weeks and determine what curation is being earned on these dust votes. Users with dust prevention services may outnumber users without, and you could breakeven, but more likely most vote value provided on these comments will result in a total loss of curation value from the votes.

This was exactly what I thought about. I have taken measures to secure the threshold on my posts with HSBI but I haven't dug into the dust on comments. How does a user access dust prevention?

This approach is good and will reduce those spammy comments.

@josephsavage is right. This will most likely be a waste of curation. Unless all participants are using a third-party service to save that dust it will negatively affect the curation APR.

I do have a delegation to dustbunny, so that may help for some dust votes. However, this curation is also symbolic in a sense - a sign that you are seen.

A dangerous thing on Hive is a lack of interaction among members. Some people can write entire articles and not get a single interaction or vote. Knowing that you've been seen by someone is one key to retention.

That's valid. For the record you don't ever have to upvote my shitposts or tipping comments. Using the tip mechanisms boosts post engagement overall in my experience so dust isn't necessary by any means but it's a very nice gesture.
