From Sunlit Steps to Lantern Nights
15,000 steps. 12 kilometers.
On paper, it looks like a day dedicated to movement, but really, it was a day split between the practical and the poetic.
Most of those kilometers were clocked during a single lunchtime walk—along a canal so still it felt like the sky had spilled into it, with clouds lazily drifting in both air and water. It was one of those walks where your mind starts to wander as much as your feet, and suddenly the step count climbs without you even noticing.
Then evening came, and with it, something completely different. We wandered into the Japanese Garden for o-bon matsuri—a festival of light, sound, and remembrance. Lanterns glowed against the dark sky, casting warm colors on the trees. The water reflected both fire and stars. People gathered quietly, not in mourning, but in celebration of those who’ve gone before us.
Walking there felt different. The steps weren’t just exercise—they were part of a shared ritual, a way of carrying memories forward. By the time I checked my watch at home, the numbers didn’t just measure distance. They measured the space between everyday life and the moments that make it meaningful.
