Rainy Tuesday - Alive And Thriving - Actifit: August 8, 2023

Photos by Erik Gustafsson

On my Tuesday it was raining on and off during the day, some parts where dry while others rained for quite a bit, and I got a few pictures from an open church that I promised to take some photos of.

In the day I had some things to do offline, and then I focused on catching up with everything on Hive that had fallen behind a bit, and after that I also completed all the rest of the daily tasks before going to bed, and in fairly good time as well, which was really nice.

This Actifit report contains the steps for 2 days, as the day before did not reset the steps at midnight but continued to count, @mcfarhat might know why.

This is my participation in the #POLIAC competition run by @poliac aka @browery, and my participation in #MAcFiT from @macfit aka @merthin.

Here are some pictures from my day.

A few days ago I promised @littlebee4 to visit a church with the same style of a church that she visted herself not long ago, and to share pictures from it.

This church is called St. Stefan's Church, and it is located in the Vanadis Park (Vanadislunden) in Vasastan, Stockholm, Sweden.

And here is a plaque with some info about the park and the church, it's in Swedish, and I tranlated it to English with the help of Google Lens and Google Translate and then cleaned it up myself a bit.

Welcome to Vanadislunden

Vanadislunden is located on part of Brunkebergsåsen. It is one of Stockholm's characteristic mountain parks and from its heights the visitor has fine views over Vasastaden's rooftop landscape. What gives the park its character is mainly the large level differences, the open, undulating grass areas and the old, full-grown trees.

History of Vanadislunden

Vanadislunden began to be built in the mid-1880s at the place that was formerly called Ormträskhöjden. Ormträsket was a small lake that was located where the Wenner-Gren center is today. The area around the new park belonged at this time to the poor outskirts of Stockholm, and the area's nickname Siberia still lives on. Over several years, countless horse teams carrying topsoil and garbage were driven to the site to create the rolling slopes of the park and in 1893 the planting of around 2000 trees and shrubs began. Construction was extensive and continued with some interruptions until 1903. It then took almost a whole generation before the small trees grew large and the park became green and lush. The flatter park areas closest to Frejgatan, including the playground, were first laid out in the 1930s in connection with the construction of Vanadisbadet. The name Vanadislunden was added in 1885 and, like so many other names of streets and places in Vasastaden, originates from Norse mythology.

The park's buildings The water tower

Ever since 1879, there has been a water reservoir at the height of the park. In the 1910s, however, the pressure in the basin had become insufficient and the reservoir was replaced with a new one. The original exterior walls were saved and allowed to be included in the construction of the new building. The highest level of the water surface in the water tower is 54 meters above sea level.

The emergency shelters

The red-colored two-story longhouses in the northern part of the park were built as emergency housing during the severe housing crisis after the First World War. Similar houses were also built on Södermalm, in Bromma and in Stadshagen. Even though the buildings were supposed to be temporary, they wanted to give them a good design, they were designed by architect Axel Wetterberg and built in 1919. Vanadislunden and Ulvsunda are the places where the houses still stand and they are today appreciated residential environments.

Cederdal and the tobacco barn

The yellow ore farm with a broken roof at Sveavägen got its current appearance in 1783. The farm was bought in 1799 by tobacco grower Peter Cedergren and named after him. During the 19th century, there were large tobacco plantations and hundreds of drying barns for the tobacco on Stockholm's ores. Today there is only one left and it is the red house adjacent to the farm. In 1873, the city of Stockholm bought Cederdal's ore farm and in the 1940s the artist Anders Jönsson was allowed to live there cheaply on the condition that he refurbish the farm. Up in the park stands a sculpture made by the artist, "Girl in evening sun", erected in 1955.

Vanadisbadet

The bath is located on a surface that has been blown out of the south-west slope of the mountain. The facility was designed by architect Paul Hedqvist and was completed in 1938. The spaces for changing, laundry room and sauna are located under terraces with a sun screen, protected by rock walls. The buildings are light with white painted concrete structures, large glass surfaces and steel details.

St. Stefan's Church

The church was designed by architect Carl Möller and was completed in 1904. The asymmetrically placed tower, the rough limestone and the shape of the windows are stylistic features that the architect took from English late Gothic. Before St. Stefan's Church was built, there was a simpler wooden church in the park, it was then moved to Aspudden, where today its tower rises almost even to the height of the cars on Essingeleden.

Above is the church and some of the surrounding park, up on the hill behind the church is the water reservoir which is built to look like a medeval stronghold.

Below shows the outside of the church with the tower and the entrance.

Above is inside the church, and looking straight up the aisle towards the altar, and below is the left side.

Above is the right side and with a side room, remember the built out side just next to the entrance, that's this room, and finally below we look back from just behind the altar.

This is me, #AliveAndThriving

That's it for today.

Thanks for reading, and stay awesome.

Sincerely,

Erik Gustafsson

Oh wow, you are so right Erik.
Very similar. Thanks for the tag.
This church is so large.
Beautiful inside, I like the separate areas on the side. So much more spacious. The blue fabric does look great with the wood.
It has a great spot in the park.
Have a lovely evening 👋🏻😊
