Hello, my lovely Hive Naija people. Itโs another beautiful weekend, and weโre excited to have you here once again. A new weekend simply means another chance to buzz the Hive blockchain, connect with one another, and simply have fun. You'll also agree with me that thereโs something special about bringing everyone together to gist, share opinions, and enjoy good vibes. That is exactly the reason we will continue to meet every weekend.

Sam's Hangout is focused on promoting the togetherness of the Nigerian brethren through active engagement on the blockchain. Beyond that, it is also centered towards the wellbeing of everyone who takes part in our weekend discussions and helps keep our discord running with their presence.
Note that this account was created to make the engagement more personal and official. You can check out the INTRODUCTION POST to learn more about our purpose and vision.
Please, do not forget to follow this account so you donโt miss out on future hangout posts and updates.
Our previous topic was โDIGITAL FOOTPRINTS & ACCOUNTABILITY"

The responses were super amazing and we had over 200 comments filled with honest opinions, jokes, harmless banter, and fresh perspectives to learn from. The energy was truly contagious. Now, letโs see if we can beat our all-time high again this weekend, shall we? Please try to encourage responses by replying to one another. Remember, engagement is what makes this hangout special.

A topic will be dropped every Friday on this account. Do well to share your thoughts, respond to someone elseโs opinion, and feel free to interrogate or add more context on it respectfully. If you donโt have anything new to add, simply reply to another comment in agreement. We encourage you to tag your friends to join the discussion so we can have a fuller house.
All interactions should happen in the comment section, because thatโs where the real gist goes down.

This week's hangout starts immediately this post goes live and ends on Sunday by 11:59 pm.

Now to our discussion for this weekend! We will be discussing โMEDIA AND LITERARY PIRACYโ. For a long time, piracy has been a problem limiting the growth of many authors and movie producers. These people put so much effort into their creative work, and when it is finally released for purchase, many pirates duplicate them and make them available to the general public. In many poor countries, this act of piracy is not seen as a big deal because of the issue of poverty. For others, it reflects the value system of individuals and the entire society.
Hereโs the question!
Our physical hangout is still on our minds and big plans are being made behind the scenes. Please check our Last Post for updates, and thank you to everyone contributing towards making it a reality.
If you have a topic you would like us to discuss in our future hangouts, please feel free to suggest it to us in the comment section and tag @sam.hangout to it.
Okay Let's Gist!!!

Don't you think we are forgetting somebody?... Well, I'm sure we are...

To make our hangout more interactive, we have decided to add two events to spice it up.
On Saturdays, we share our owanbe stories, party gists, and even pictures.
On Sundays, we reflect on the weekend and things we learnt so far, as well as share plans for the new week.
Don't forget to join us!!

There are no strict rules as regards this weekend hangout. Feel free to speak any Nigerian language you like, whether Igbo, Yoruba, pidgin, Efik, or others, as long as it can be understood.
With all that said, let the discussion begin...

Happy Sunday, Everyone ๐น
This is actually a broad topic with valid arguments from the opposite sides so I'm compelled to drop a note on it. When it comes to piracy, we can simply agree that it's wrong. Many authors and media creatives publish their work because they hope to earn from it, and I mean, get back their capital spent in publishing, as well as make profit.
On the other hand, people living in improviserished countries have basic needs. So should they be deprived of reading the books they desire to expand their knowledge and also watch movies for entertainment? Absolutely not. Besides, in this case, most of them do not make profit off these works because they only consume it. So to call it theft at all, we have to first address how violent poverty is and how we're unable to access basic things like books and movies. Else, we're missing the point.
Now, I would say commercial piracy is the actual problem and I don't mind the perpetrators being punished. But for poor people who simply turn these materials to PDF or share them in Google drives with their friends for consumption or even upload on free sites, I have no grudge against them. They're not causing direct harm and as a creative, If poor people can't access your works and you're not joining them to fight the government that makes it difficult for them to buy directly from you, what exactly is the point?
I wish you all a lovely weekend.
Happy Owanbe Saturday, my people.๐๐
Saturdays are for parties, weddings, and plenty of jollof rice. Do you have any owanbe lined up for today, or are you chilling at home? Share your Saturday plans with us.

Either it's in a poor economy country or not, crime is crime and whatever is bad is bad without mincing words.
This doesn't mean I have not at any point seen movies by purchasing pirated copies o. Back when I was still young that pirated copies are so rampant and seems like a norms and all these actors will be wailing on TV in adverts or TV shows, complaining about piracy and still, 20in1 movies CDs will still full market and we will always buy. Not because we wanted to be wicked but because we wanted to watch these popular movies too and we had it at our tips at the rate we can afford instead of buying 1 for 500 or is it 200naira then, we would just get the 20in1 for 200 only and still enjoy what others will enjoy.
20 whole movies o. Now think about how many other people do this and how it affected those who put in efforts and money to produce these movies coupled with marketers wahala back then.
So the main cause for this bad acts are the people and platforms in corner pirating this movies cos no matter what, they're earning from it and not because they are doing because of the poor economy.
Small time weh movie arrive Netflix like this, u don see am for telegram groups, naijakinikan site, moviebox etc and as per longthroat citizen, we won't see a free food and say we're fasting.
IT IS WELL JARE.... Everybody na Criminal ๐
@marsdave @nkemakonam89 @van.illa @merit.ahama @chefqueen @goldenproject @abdul-qudus @quduus1 Did you guys ever bought that 10in1 20in1 CDs or those translation Jackie Chan movies
Momma, is it that you're being careful to not mention those site, cos am begining to believe that you .....Uno ๐๐๐.
This is a beautiful perspective though.

But crime is crime, because if there's a proper agreements, it will be better, so the original author won't run st a lost
You won't even mind her not buying you puff-puff ๐
That's just it. Crime is crime

We bought ooo ๐คฃ๐คฃ.we later upgrade to renting sef, we rent for small change and return it ๐๐คฃ
I want to believe most people who do this do that because the original/real versions are always more expensive or at times hard to get.
I think the main issue is the system. Assuming education, books and all this media stuffs are accessible and affordable, I'm sure people will desist from pirating and support the original owners.
I don't support piracy.
But then again, people should learn to reference original owners of all this things. Ion know if the case of BBO and I think lucky dube fits, but then there's an issue ongoing about his (BBO) recent song and that of Lucky who claims the sound, lyrics and all are same, with just a little difference. And the original owner claims he wasn't aware, informed or referenced in any way....

In song part ehn, I can't really choke mouth cos there have been times some songs will be laid in my heart while writing songs or even doing something different and at the end of the day, I might hear another song somewhere that probably a part of it in tone seems similar to what I composed earlier without hearing that song before I wrote mine.
But in terms of book, referencing are allowed so I don't think there should be issue of plagiarism of authors actually knows what they are doing
Huhm, I get that part Mama. And it is understandable.
I mentioned BBO cos am a big fan, a big fan. That particular song isn't open you will hear and have it mixup with the actual one. But then, I can't say he didn't get inspired to sing it.

When it comes to books piracy or plagerism, i believe that there's is nothing written by someone that another person has done written before. So everyone should just be taught on how to properly reference works.

@yechee please help me take note of this. Thank you.
Noted. We apologize for the inconvenience.
No matter the excuse to crime, it is still a crime. Publishing someone's work is even liken to robbery. Because tell me, how I will sit down and bring imagination, embark on research, burn candles, to publish a work. Only for me to realise that I earned nothing simply because my publications was duplicated. To be acces free or even at a cheaper rate, thereby rendering my original copy useless.
Because, me as a person will not leave a cheap and still quality materials to buy the same material at a high price.
So the issue of piracy should be treated with every necessity.
I came across the rule and punishment attached to anyone who published a work that doesn't belong to him, long time ago when I went IT at national library.
But looking at our society today, I think we're beginning to neglect the rule.
Poverty plays a major role in why people patronize pirates for films, books, and music in places like Nigeria, but easy access amplifies it hugely.
Take for example โฆ5,000 for a book or movie versus โฆ200 for a fake (pirated) copy. Who will cough up that kind of cash when cheap copies abound? Poverty normalizes piracy as people cannot afford originals, turning it into a โpoverty mentalityโ where low prices trump ethics.
What I meant by โeasy access amplifies it hugelyโ is that pirated content is everywhere and very easy to get. Pirates flood every spot, take Lasgidi for example: Alaba, Idumota, Apapa markets, Oluwole, and there's the WhatsApp groups, Telegram channels, and USBs at bus stops. No queues, no data fees, instant grabs, and way simpler than legit stores.
Media and book piracy causes massive revenue losses for authors, producers, and publishers. In Naija, Nollywood loses billions yearly to pirates. Peopleโs sweat!
For the government, they have a huge role to play. They control policies, funding, and enforcement that could break the piracy cycle. They should treat piracy strictly as intellectual theft that starves creators. Naija publishers and Nollywood need revenue to innovate and grow the economy. There is the 2022 Copyright Act, and it should be effective. Raids are not enough; deploy mobile courts at pirate hotspots for instant fines, like โฆ100k+ per stall, plus digital tracking of Telegram/WhatsApp sellers via the NCC. Also train community informants, with rewards.
But as they are enforcing these punishments and laws, there is also the need to provide affordable books and media, including accessible formats for the visually impaired. Initiatives like Nigeriaโs Book Hawker Scheme aim to reach communities, as well as bulk school textbook programs and digital libraries. This would go a long way in reducing piracy, though not totally.
Enjoy your weekend!
When you talk about piracy in media at large , I don't really accept the idea of calling people that we know are less privileged as thieves. They can't afford the original copies of this things, the are costly more than they can afford, isn't it the country that failed us? Piracy was a way these many people to also be updated about entertainment, enjoy and feel they are alive too. I'm not stating that it's not bad as the revenue for these authors are reduce due to piracy but we shouldn't blame the watchers and viewers alone but the government that was supposed to make these things affordable for everyone to be able to get ,that way there won't be need to go for piracy.
