Saddle test -> two hours at 150 watts... my training diary entry from August 8 2026

(edited)

(Here you can see how Zwift displays current workout metrics. I simply took a photo yesterday just as things were starting to get really tough. The last half-hour was a mental battle.)

Hi Actifitters,

yesterday, I planned a longer cycling session to test out my new saddle. With my old one, the perineal cutout wasn't large enough, causing my "manhood" to go numb from time to time. That is definitely no longer an issue with the new saddle. I created a workout based on a Garmin recommendation: I was to pedal for one hour and 58 minutes at an average power output of 150 watts. Since Zwift offers the option to build your own workouts, that is exactly what I did—a short warm-up, followed by one hour and 58 minutes at exactly 150 watts, and finally a brief cool-down.

Here are the key figures for the session:

Duration - 2:00:19
Distance - 62.19 km
Average speed - 31.0 km/h
Maximum speed - 47.2 km/h
Average power output - 148 watts
Average heart rate - 137 bpm
Maximum heart rate - 166 bpm
Average cadence - 86
Maximum cadence - 95
Calories - 1025

As you can see, my heart rate climbed as high as 166 beats per minute. That is definitely an area I need to work on. At my current fitness level, 150 watts marks the upper limit of Zone 1. My heart rate shouldn't go that high in this zone—not even when riding for two hours straight. I’m curious to see where I’ll stand in a few weeks or months.

Another issue—though one that already existed with the old saddle—is chafing between my thighs and buttocks. I either need to get a new pair of cycling shorts or use an anti-chafing cream. My shorts are actually quite old, so they could well be part of the problem.

Mission 80 (Day 41 = 86.7 kg / Goal = 80.0 kg / Initial weight = 90.0 / Total loss = 3.3 kg)

Even though I had a few beers yesterday while enjoying the sunny day, I tried to keep an eye on my calorie intake, and I think I managed that quite well. I had feared that the alcohol would cause water retention and that the scale would show a higher number today, but that hasn't happened; in fact, I’ve lost 100 grams since yesterday.

For today, I plan to work on pull-ups and complete a longer cycling session. I also want to incorporate a few dumbbell exercises.
Since we’ve been invited to a barbecue this evening, it wouldn’t hurt for me to burn off a few calories beforehand.
