When I was starving myself at 1200 calories, I didn't lose much more weight, but I did lose all my muscle to the point I struggled to do daily activities. Total calories do matter, but healthy eating and any amount of exercise matter more than severe cuts. Anyways, cuts like they're doing only work short term, then the metabolism gets tanked and they stall or gain it back. The biggest aha moment for me was when I ate MORE than I wanted and started losing weight. Everything I was taught about dieting was wrong.
I've lost 25lbs in 6 months by eating more food than I was, and starting small exercise, but as I got stronger, I did more each week until I was lifting weights regularly. When I started I could barely wash dishes without getting winded and had no energy for anything. My 2 cents is figure out what macros work for you to give you maximum satisfaction for minimum calories. Use a TDE calculator and figure out your maintenance calories, and diet by eating a % of your TDE. The amount of calories you can eat and lose weight will likely surprise you. You should not be starving yourself. For me, protein is king. I am satisfied longer and am less hungry eating lots of protein than I am eating fat or carbohydrates.
Most of our diets are high in fat and carbohydrates and low in protein. I'm not even talking about unhealthy diets. Much of the food we eat is carbohydrate rich and gets it's calories from fat, but there is very little protein in it. I had to make significant lifestyle changes just to hit a 35/35/30 mix of protein, carbs, and fat. I was getting less than 1/3 of the protein I needed, eating 'normal' food. Eggs and lean meat like pork loin, lean ground beef, chicken breast, deli meat, turkey, sirloin, have been my best and cheapest sources of protein.
