Sam’s Hangout #131 - “IMPORTATION & LOCAL INDUSTRIES"

"We can choose food that keeps local economies vibrant and farmers on their land." – Frances Beinecke.

Hello, my lovely Hive Naija people. It’s another beautiful weekend, and we’re excited to have you here once again. A new weekend simply means another chance to buzz the Hive blockchain, connect with one another, and simply have fun. You'll also agree with me that there’s something special about bringing everyone together to gist, share opinions, and enjoy good vibes. That is exactly the reason we will continue to meet every weekend.

IMPORTATION & LOCAL INDUSTRIES

Now to our discussion for this weekend! We will be discussing "IMPORTATION & LOCAL INDUSTRIES”.
From clothes and electronics to food, beauty products, machinery, and raw materials, imported goods are a major part of everyday life in many developing economies. They can give consumers more options, competitive prices, and access to products that may not be locally available. At the same time, heavy dependence on imports has raised questions about what happens to local businesses, manufacturers, creatives, and skilled workers trying to build sustainable industries at home.

Here's the question!

Do you think the growing dependence on imported goods negatively affects local businesses, skilled workers, and manufacturers by making it harder for them to compete in the market? If yes, should governments do more to protect and promote locally made products and how can they do this?

OR

Do you think consumers should be encouraged to purchase imported products as they wish regardless of whether it affects local businesses? If yes, why would you support this and what could make you start using more locally produced goods than imported ones?

If you have a topic you would like us to discuss in our future hangouts, please feel free to suggest it to us in the comment section and tag @sam.hangout to it.

Okay Let's Gist!!!

Be as simple and sincere with the discussion, hehehe.

Imported goods has been helping us far back base on the fact that our country is not really producing. The problem we have is over dependency on imported goods and not even making plans to start production from our end.

The thing is, even if we are relying so much on imported goods the government and the people should make plans to start production, provide things that will make production easier and also petronize our locally made products.

This is APT! There's barely any country that doesn't import. The difference is simply overdependence. I hope thos can be curtailed somehow. Happy weekend, Nsigo.

The fact that we are moving digitally has made importation advantageous more than its possible down sides. And because of that, I believe it has also created more opportunities for people.

People can be very busy, lazy and even ignorant about how to import goods so they will still need the help of these small vendors and businesses. I believe that there will always be people that prefer to go to the local market to get what they want rather than place an order online and that also means there are opportunities still for our local businesses.

In every way that I think about it, opportunities are limitless because we have so many people on this earth with various preferences.

If some local businesses are not doing well, it is because they lack the insight to market what they sell well. You can’t be selling something these days and say you don’t like social media, that will only mean you have lost more than half of your potential buyers.

I believe that’s why we even import things in the first place. These businesses do their publicity so well and when we see we can get better goods at even cheaper prices, we will definitely go for it.

Placement matters a lot in determining people’s preferences most times.

Happy weekend, everyone. For this topic, I believe it's clear that importation isn't bad in itself. In fact, it encourages alternatives and varieties. However, a nation becoming too dependent on goods from other countries, especially the ones that can be locally produced is the problem. It's largely a fault of the government. Even themselves import more than the citizens, so it's impossible for everyone else not to follow suit.

I think regulation on imports on specific goods will help reduce over-dependence, as well as increase chances for more local competitors.

That Frances Beinecke quote is a solid choice to kick things off. I honestly think focusing on local industries is such a relevant topic right now so I am looking forward to seeing what everyone has to say.
