Sam’s Hangout #121 - “TRIBE OR NATION?”

Let me be the first to comment today.😁
First of all I will like to say that this is a very sensitive topic. Tribalism in our country has become so sensitive as a matter of life and death. The way and manner it influences politics and every other sector is alarming. Every tribe wants the president to come from their tribe particular the 3 major ethnic groups, whenever a president comes from a certain tribe and he is either over performing or otherwise, critism will come from the other tribe, the lack of support for a non tribal man is evident to the point that people have now build so muçh hate for other tribes. Some of my personal experiences comes from marriage, job opportunity and the likes, you dare not marry from certain tribe and you can never be privilege to have certain job roles in communities and tribes you don't belong.

To make the matter worst, the recent insecurities further buttressed how much people are willing to stay under certain government for as long as they care even if the government isn't protective of the citizen.
How can a youth come out to openly say that they prefer to die under this particular regime due to insecurity, rather than have another tribal man as the country leader even if such individual will do better.

People are ready to shed their blood to defend their tribe and creates some right and privilege for their own culture rather than join hands from various diverse groups fo build the country.

Yes, I honestly think tribalism is worse these days than many wants to admit.

I’ve seen good people get denied jobs or help just because they’re not from the same group as those in charge. I’ve also watched people argue or even fall out online, taking sides only by tribe instead of what is right. It hurts to see old friends act distant just because of where we come from. It hurts to see families face pressure just because of who they choose to marry.

Change should start with each of us. I strongly believe we must all put hands together to put a stop to tribalism by not judging people before we know them.

Teach our kids that character matters more than tribe. Give opportunities on merit, not favour. Make real friends from other groups. Speak up when we see unfair bias.

Tribalism is a big problem eating deep into our lives as a society. in diverse sectors , people will paint it in ur face that you aren't of their tribe...i.had a painful experience with that while seeking for a job placement in a lagos state hospital

I.

First off, I'm of the opinion that tribalism is common amidst us, and we can't see it in business, relationships, and even politics. You go for interview and you gain more attention or even favoritism all because you're of the same tribe with the interviewer. Some get treated well, while some get treated badly before they even get to see what they can offer and the kind of person they are...all because of their tribe.
I feel that shouldn't be. At the end of the day, we all are humans and we should be judged by our character, competence, and such, and not by where we come from or what name we bear. This is a lit bit related to a topic being treated in a community last week, "nepotism." We should be fair in our decision making rather than ignoring qualified people because you have someone or a candidate who's of same tribe with you.

II.
For this, I will like to say merit should always come first. Why give someone an opportunity all because you know them, when they don't even qualify for it. We all love our culture and traditions, but it shouldn't be a reason to exclude others of opportunities.
In conclusion, competence, integrity, and good character should be valued far above tribe/ethnicity.

Tribe or Nation

Every person belongs to a tribe because that is where they learn their language, customs, and way of life. Our tribe gives us a sense of identity and reminds us of our family history. It is something we should respect and preserve because it connects us to our roots.

A nation is much bigger than a tribe. It is made up of many tribes living together under one government and one flag. In a country like Nigeria, people come from different ethnic groups, yet they all have the responsibility to work together for peace and development. While we should be proud of our tribe, we must not allow tribal differences to cause hatred or division. A country becomes stronger when its people see themselves as one nation, even though they come from different backgrounds.

I'm a proud igbo girl from Abia state,IsI ala ngwa to be precise and I love everyone equally no matter the tribe or nation we are one .

Do you think tribalism has become much more prevalent in our society in recent times than many people are willing to admit? If yes, what personal experiences or stories makes you think so, and how can society begin to reduce these biases?

Answer
Yes, tribalism has become much more prevalent in our society today. Unlike the past where tribalism was mostly focus on geographical region, it had now being embedded into politics, and social media platforms. People in political power seem to favor people from their region the most, and rivalry among tribes occur in social platforms, where people no longer fight in favor of logical reasons but to uphold their tradition.

Even algorithm on social platforms seems to bring contents to individuals from their region. Place of origin in exams and application now becomes a criteria for employment. I had once being denied employment because I was not from the southwest and I know of a female friend who clearly told me she can't marry me because I was not from her tribe.

To reduce these biases, people need to learn empathy, see a nation instead of an individual from certain region. And learn to honor integrity and honesty than people
