Hello, my lovely Hive Naija people. It’s another beautiful weekend, and we’re excited to have you here once again. A new weekend simply means another chance to buzz the Hive blockchain, connect with one another, and simply have fun. You'll also agree with me that there’s something special about bringing everyone together to gist, share opinions, and enjoy good vibes. That is exactly the reason we will continue to meet every weekend.

Sam's Hangout is focused on promoting the togetherness of the Nigerian brethren through active engagement on the blockchain. Beyond that, it is also centered towards the wellbeing of everyone who takes part in our weekend discussions and helps keep our discord running with their presence.
Note that this account was created to make the engagement more personal and official. You can check out the INTRODUCTION POST to learn more about our purpose and vision.
Please, do not forget to follow this account so you don’t miss out on future hangout posts and updates.
Our previous topic was ”INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY"

The responses were super amazing and we had over 120+ comments filled with honest opinions, jokes, harmless banter, and fresh perspectives to learn from. The energy was truly contagious. Now, let’s see if we can beat our all-time high again this weekend, shall we? Please try to encourage responses by replying to one another. Remember, engagement is what makes this hangout special.

A topic will be dropped every Friday on this account. Do well to share your thoughts, respond to someone else’s opinion, and feel free to interrogate or add more context on it respectfully. If you don’t have anything new to add, simply reply to another comment in agreement. We encourage you to tag your friends to join the discussion so we can have a fuller house.
All interactions should happen in the comment section, because that’s where the real gist goes down.

This week's hangout starts immediately this post goes live and ends on Sunday by 11:59 pm.

Now to our discussion for this weekend! We will be discussing “CULTURE, EXPRESSION & OWNERSHIP”. Every weekend here in Nigeria, we attend weddings or stumble across some lovely and fashionable pictures of couples in their traditional attires either for their pre-wedding photoshoots or their actual weddings. This has always been a way of upholding one's identity and highlighting the cultural diversity that exists across the country. However, in recent times, many couples have adopted the style of wearing ceremonial attires that are totally different from their origins. Some wear their indigenous outfits during their weddings but the accesories are often borrowed from other cultures without acknowledgement. Many people think this is culture misappropriation while others believe it's simply the evolution of shared expressions.
Here’s the question!
Our physical hangout is still on our minds and big plans are being made behind the scenes. Please check our Last Post for updates, and thank you to everyone contributing towards making it a reality.
If you have a topic you would like us to discuss in our future hangouts, please feel free to suggest it to us in the comment section and tag @sam.hangout to it.
Okay Let's Gist!!!

Don't you think we are forgetting somebody?... Well, I'm sure we are...

To make our hangout more interactive, we have decided to add two events to spice it up.
On Saturdays, we share our owanbe stories, party gists, and even pictures.
On Sundays, we reflect on the weekend and things we learnt so far, as well as share plans for the new week.
Don't forget to join us!!

There are no strict rules as regards this weekend hangout. Feel free to speak any Nigerian language you like, whether Igbo, Yoruba, pidgin, Efik, or others, as long as it can be understood.
With all that said, let the discussion begin...

This weekend, the topic of discussion calls for absolute reconsiderations. Like they say, culture is dynamic and in our changing world, knowledge has increased tremendously, so has the reasoning and logic perceptions of people increased too.
One thing about culture, whether it be clothing, food, emotion, respect, greetings, hairdos and whatnot, it does not remain static. This isnthe beauty of culture.
Let me begin this discourse by saying that culture can be influenced, once there is a superior one in terms of exposure and yearnings of a people, a culture can suffer peer influence 😂🤣😭.
In the case of attire that is worn during special occasion like wedding, the truth remains that the english culture influenced our native culture and that has since registered itself with the people.
Now that we have come to the juncture of truth and revelation, we have seen that what defines a wedding is not the attire worn but the aftermath of the ceremonies. People have since started cutting down on the hype for white wedding as it was called.
In my church for instance, the leadership has adviced that an intending couple can have their marriage blessed in a room of the bride, groom, their parents and the clergy that would perform the rites. This whole expensive ceremony where some folks have to go take a loan in the name of organizing a marriage feast is no more in vogue.
Lets me buttress on the wedding attire.
Gone are the days when couple MUST where a pair of suit and white wedding gown before their union can be solemnize. Traditional attire or any such attire that the couple dim fit can be worn.
In fact, their are instances where Europeans come to shop for African native attire for their weddings. This is just to tell us the changing belief pattern for solemnizing a marriage.
Where are your tags 😨
Good day everyone.Always good to be here.

Huhm, ok. Personally, I do not think our weddings should be limited to just the couples own culture. I agree that our attires, languages and all that shows or reflects our culture carries very deep meaning, and there's nothing bad when our weddings reflect it, but Nigeria is a mixed country and so far our weddings aren't just one culture/tribe based based and we marry one another, then our expressions shouldn't be limited too. Culture should be preserved, I agree with that but we can't force a certain thing in the couples, if they want it mixed, fine and good and if they want to stay fully traditional, then so be it.
Also, talking of mixing other tribes customes or attires, personally I see nothing wrong with that, to me it's more of love and appreciation than erasure. But I will love to add that it's depends on how it is used, each culture, tribes and their attires deserves respect. So, as long as you give honour to the owner and respects them, you're good to go. Nigeria is one big family, and it's just one of the ways in which we can show love and unity amidst ourselves. So, to me it does not in any way erase the original identity, meaning or ownership.

Fashion has even gone way more than sticking to only ones tribe attire.
Weddings are ways to show our cultural values and that's why all tribes have their way of performing wedding functions. If cultures can be borrowed then some would have incorporated other tribe's mode of function to replace theirs.
Our dresses, accessories, active should promote our original culture cos that's even the only way I can say cultures are still been maintained.
Is it not in this era where parents counts their dialects to be vernacular and forbids children from speaking it.....
Happy Weekend, Everyone 🌹
I greet everybody specially. Hope una dey enjoy the city boy's movement tori for town? 🤣
Culture is dynamic and every tribe has a way of dressing up for which they're known. It's their identity! So when it comes to traditional marriages, couples should dress in their traditional attires and accessories, as a way of promoting and equality preserving their cultural heritage.
In a case of inter marriage, the couples should go with their traditional attire and all, that's if they actually have any. Lol. But if it's intra marriage, they should incorporate the two different cultural attire and accessories, thereby promoting the two cultures together. This not only brings peace and unity, amongst the tribes, it goes a long way to cement the relationship. It also helps the people better understand the tribes they're marrying into.
I've seen this a couple of times, and it's just beautiful.
However, in a situation where their traditional attires and accessories have gone extinct, make them just use any available one. Lol. By the way, in God's eyes, we're all the same, culture included. Hehehe.
!BBH
As the name implies " Traditional Marriage"
So i feel every couples doing traditional marriage in Nigeria should use their traditional attire. It does not just make the event beautiful, but it showcases and preserve the culture of such community or ethic group.
