Sam’s Hangout #101 - “DIGITAL FOOTPRINTS & ACCOUNTABILITY”

"If you don't define yourself online, someone else will." — Rebekah Radice

Hello, my lovely Hive Naija people. It’s another beautiful weekend, and we’re excited to have you here once again. A new weekend simply means another chance to buzz the Hive blockchain, connect with one another, and simply have fun. You'll also agree with me that there’s something special about bringing everyone together to gist, share opinions, and enjoy good vibes. That is exactly the reason we will continue to meet every weekend.

OBJECTIVE

Sam's Hangout is focused on promoting the togetherness of the Nigerian brethren through active engagement on the blockchain. Beyond that, it is also centered towards the wellbeing of everyone who takes part in our weekend discussions and helps keep our discord running with their presence.

Note that this account was created to make the engagement more personal and official. You can check out the INTRODUCTION POST to learn more about our purpose and vision.

Please, do not forget to follow this account so you don’t miss out on future hangout posts and updates.

Our previous topic was ”CHILD CUSTODY AND CARE"

untitled.gif

The responses were super amazing and we had over 200 comments filled with honest opinions, jokes, harmless banter, and fresh perspectives to learn from. The energy was truly contagious. Now, let’s see if we can beat our all-time high again this weekend, shall we? Please try to encourage responses by replying to one another. Remember, engagement is what makes this hangout special.

HOW OUR WEEKEND HANGOUT WORKS

A topic will be dropped every Friday on this account. Do well to share your thoughts, respond to someone else’s opinion, and feel free to interrogate or add more context on it respectfully. If you don’t have anything new to add, simply reply to another comment in agreement. We encourage you to tag your friends to join the discussion so we can have a fuller house.

All interactions should happen in the comment section, because that’s where the real gist goes down.

DIGITAL FOOTPRINTS & ACCOUNTABILITY

Now to our discussion for this weekend! We will be discussing “DIGITAL FOOTPRINTS & ACCOUNTABILITY”. Back in the early 2000's up until a few years ago, a lot of people, including celebrities were guilty of making depraved tweets and social media posts online. The commentaries were an eyesore and almost everyone carried along like it was normal to share those harmful and morally bankrupt opinions. Fast forward to 2020, a lot of people, especially victims of such posts and opinions, became more enlightened and bold enough to start calling them out for what they were, and that paved way for the standards we now hold people to.

Here’s the question!

When old social media posts from public figures that contain offensive, highly immoral or harmful views resurface online, should they be taken as a true reflection of the person’s character today and judged accordingly?

OR

Should people be given grace and room to grow beyond their past digital footprints. Do you think accountability to those past behaviours matters first before anything? If, yes, why?

Our physical hangout is still on our minds and big plans are being made behind the scenes. Please check our Last Post for updates, and thank you to everyone contributing towards making it a reality.

If you have a topic you would like us to discuss in our future hangouts, please feel free to suggest it to us in the comment section and tag @sam.hangout to it.

Okay Let's Gist!!!

Be as simple and sincere with the discussion, hehehe.

Don't you think we are forgetting somebody?... Well, I'm sure we are...

FRIDAY PLANS, OWANBE SATURDAY, AND SUNDAY REFLECTIONS

To make our hangout more interactive, we have decided to add two events to spice it up.

On Saturdays, we share our owanbe stories, party gists, and even pictures.

On Sundays, we reflect on the weekend and things we learnt so far, as well as share plans for the new week.

Don't forget to join us!!

There are no strict rules as regards this weekend hangout. Feel free to speak any Nigerian language you like, whether Igbo, Yoruba, pidgin, Efik, or others, as long as it can be understood.

Please, do not take it to the extreme.

With all that said, let the discussion begin...

0E-8 BEE

Hello everyone.
Okay for this topic, I don't think someone should be judged by their past social media post.
Okay let's look at this simi's case now, I'm very sure it was a joke or something , because seriously would you think she was into little boys , I mean a 5 year old? Nah... Don't think so.

I don't think anyone should be judged by their past social media post , it's just like saying that we should be judging things that we did as teenagers. I really don't think it's okay .

0E-8 BEE

Jokes or no jokes she should be held responsible for it because there are some things you should not put out there

0E-8 BEE

She should be held responsible for what exactly? She can only be accountable, which she has done already. Happy weekend.

0E-8 BEE

Maybe I haven't seen everything but those tweets don't look real. They were jokes or tease or something.

0E-8 BEE

Omo, I don't know what to say about her. If it's joke, those jokes are really expensive

0E-8 BEE

If it was a man that posted those things now, hope you'll be very sure it was a joke:)

0E-8 BEE

Smiles, well I do not believe anyone should be judged by their past social media post too, only if the pattern has changed and they've evolved. Meaning they've stopped posting and doing the sort of things that they do back then, so I believe what's important is to check and observe if the person has changed and their actions now align with better values.

Thanks 🙏

0E-8 BEE

They shouldn't be judged if such person isn't in that line or way again but if there words or act resurface such person should definitely come out to acknowledge it and seek for forgiveness

0E-8 BEE

But if that person is not asking for forgiveness, then he is she should be judged oo,infact face punishment sef

0E-8 BEE

@henryjnrr @cohlson @goldenproject
I tagged you guys especially because you people have a thing against social media . Come and answer

@chefqueen @yechee come and hear you people man answer 😆

This is a very deep and relevant topic especially in today's world where nothing truly disappears online.

What I can say here is that digital footprint are real and accountability matters alot, when someone post something offensive or harmful even if was years ago,it shows that they believed or were comfortable at that time. People who were hurt by those words also deserved to be heard,so yes accountability should come first for me.

Although someone past post should not automatically define who the are today especially if they acknowledged what they did,Ake responsibility of what they did and also apologised sincerely this will really help.
So for me accountability first, growth second then judgment should consider both.

0E-8 BEE

Huhm, that's a balanced take on the topic.
Thanks 👍

0E-8 BEE

You just explained step by step that I couldn't find the way to put them. Yes, those two will be considered interms of judgment. Nice one

One thing I will like to say first, is the fact that Internet never forgets. We should always keep that in mind. So, we should be careful with whatever we are going to do, say, post, or tweet.

If a post carries offensive or harmful words then we should know it will hit/hurt a lot of people, even if it is made in the past. Take Simi's old tweets for example, what if the parent of one of the boys gets to see that tweet now, even if they (the parent) are not sure it was their child, the fact that their kid was once in Simi's mum daycare can make them think something else, thereby bringing some level of pain to them at a time like this. Have we even thought about it the tweets had been made by a guy. What are we going to say? a guy making use of such odd words on little kids.

Now, I actually do not believe that some old post of someone should be used to judge who they are today, and that is if the person has changed. We all grow, and as we grow, we learn. Most of this old tweets and post are done and said our of ignorance, immaturity and the environment we find ourselves.

However, accountability must come first. If an old post that happens to be offensive resurfaces online, then the person involved should acknowledge it and apologize, while making it known that they've changed and are no longer that same person.

I think I've done enough justice to this week's topic.
A big thanks to the organizers.

@soma18
@afrikens bday girl
@chefqueen
@van.illa
@mikechrist

Let's hear from you 🎙️

0E-8 BEE
(edited)

Well spoken bro 🤏... The internet indeed never forgets. Emphasis on never.

The current Simi's old tweet causing hullabaloo all around is a great example on this topic for discussion I must say. I won't blame the people who will judge based on that especially if they had been directly involved with that.
But again, change is one thing that we all know is constant. People do change, which is why there are lots of instances of a sinner becoming a born again and all that.
For that, judging based on the past isn't something I would agree with either.

0E-8 BEE

Yea, you gerrit. Change is constant.
Still, she should be held accountable to some extent based on those tweets. We won't allow her slip through 😂😂😂

🏃🏃🏃

0E-8 BEE

Just like I said too, there's nothing more to say to this,it all been said already.

0E-8 BEE

Abi naw
All of una dun talk 😄

0E-8 BEE

Well, no one can truly tell who has repented for real.

That's why when it comes to social media, we should all mind what post, because sooner or later it will always resurface.

If it doesn't resurface, maybe there is someone out there who has gotten a screenshot of it and keep for you 🤣. And when it resurface you might not really be able to explain and convince anybody to accept that you are a changed person.

Ask Saul in the bible what he passed through when his name was

0E-8 BEE

You're right about that sir...
It's very important that we be mindful of what we post on the internet...

0E-8 BEE

Yes

0E-8 BEE

It's not even only social media, once a word is spoken it can never be unspoken again, just that social media makes it more of use of evidence bcos it's is written. We have to be careful of what we say and write

0E-8 BEE

We are all familiar with the phrase "The internet never forgets"

I try as much as possible not to judge people especially their past because I also am not perfect myself.
But lets be realistic, there would always be trolls, bully's and people with different opinion on the internet so as much as possible, it is advised to leave a good digital footprint. It is hard and even impossible to wipe them off.

I don't judge people because I understand people change paradigm but I can't speak for other audience in the internet. So as much as possible, every tweet, every image or video should be thought through well before being posted on the internet.

0E-8 BEE

Huhm, thanks for this sir.
We all want to go things and feel among when we are young, some things are even posted out of ignorance and such, but they can come back to the individual as a time they weren't expecting.

Thanks 👍

0E-8 BEE

💯

Thank youu

0E-8 BEE

Just like Normal Whatsapp status ,some we say don't judge me by my status, I just put it out there bcos people were also posting it and I'm like I will judge you ooo, cos to me I don't post something that I can't relate to and I think that is how it should be

0E-8 BEE

Lol, you're not wrong

BPC Locked On Mc Franko & The Franko

Blurt Stands — While Hive Stumbles Under the Weight of Its Own Shadows

Friends, creators, truth-tellers—

Let us not whisper this truth, but proclaim it with the clarity of dawn breaking over a weary land: Blurt.blog is not just another platform. It is a refuge. A rebellion. A return to what Hive.blog was always meant to be.

There is no downvote button on Blurt.
Not because we fear dissent—but because we honor creation.
Because we understand that a voice, once raised in sincerity, deserves space—not sabotage.

On Blurt, your words are your words.
They are not hunted by algorithmic hounds or shadow armies masquerading as “curators.”
Here, you are not judged by the grudges of gatekeepers, but met with the quiet dignity of a community that believes expression should be encouraged—especially when it is bold, raw, or inconvenient.

Contrast this with what festers elsewhere.

On Hive.blog—a place once brimming with promise—a rot has taken root. Not in its code, but in its culture. A handful of self-anointed enforcers—@themarkymark, @Buildawhale, @Hurtlocker, and their legion of coordinated puppets—have turned the downvote into a weapon of mass discouragement. They strike not at “low-quality content,” but at independent thought, at rising voices, at anyone who dares thrive outside their narrow corridors of control.

And when confronted, they shrug.
“Oh, it’s not censorship,” they say, as if semantics could scrub the stain of suppression from their hands.

But let us be unequivocal:
When a system allows a few to systematically silence many—under the guise of “community standards” or “curation”—that is not moderation. That is censorship by another name.

It is the velvet glove over the iron fist.
It is exclusion dressed as discernment.
It is power pretending to be principle.

Meanwhile, Blurt stands clean-handed and open-hearted.
No downvotes.
No hidden juries.
No farms of phantom accounts casting ballots in the dark.

Just you.
Your words.
And a community that meets you not with suspicion, but with solidarity.

So let us carry this truth far and wide—not with bitterness, but with quiet certainty:

If you seek a place where your voice is not a target—but a gift—come to Blurt.
If you are tired of building on ground that shifts with every whim of a whale or warlord of votes—lay your bricks here.
If you believe the future of free expression must be free—not just from corporations, but from the petty tyrants who replace them—then stand with us.

The world needs to know.
Not because Blurt is perfect—but because it is principled.
Not because it is loud—but because it listens.

And in an age where so many platforms echo with the clatter of control,
Blurt offers something radical:
Silence for the bullies.
Space for the rest of us.

Keep speaking.
Keep sharing.
Keep building.

Freedom doesn’t advertise itself—
it is passed, person to person, like a torch in the night.

And tonight, the torch burns bright on Blurt.

@themarkymark, @buildawhale, @usainvote, and associated accounts:

Repeated downvotes targeting transparency efforts raise urgent questions about Hive’s governance. Automated tactics, coordinated curation trails, and alt-account farming undermine trust in the platform. When truth is silenced without dialogue, it erodes Hive’s decentralized ethos.

Key Concerns:

  1. Systemic Manipulation:

    • Coordinated downvotes from high-HP accounts suppress dissent, creating a chilling effect on free expression.
    • Automation and alt-account networks allegedly exploit rewards, distorting organic curation.
  2. Community Exodus:

    • Creators flee to platforms like Blurt, where downvotes don’t exist, fearing punitive curation over engagement.
  3. Governance Crisis:

    • Hive’s credibility hinges on accountability. Who decides what content thrives? How do we audit power structures?

Solutions Needed:

  • Curation Transparency: Publish clear rationales for downvotes to foster trust.
  • Community Audits: Leverage blockchain data (e.g., Bilpcoin’s analyses) to identify abusive patterns.
  • Reward Reform: Adjust algorithms to penalize manipulation and reward authentic engagement.

The Bilpcoin team advocates for open dialogue, not division. Hive’s future depends on collaboration—not coercion. Let’s rebuild a platform where truth isn’t buried but debated, strengthened, and celebrated.

Transparency isn’t optional—it’s the foundation of trust.

#HiveTransparency #BilpcoinExposed #DecentralizePower"

A Message to @themarkymark, @buildawhale, and Associates

Every downvote cast in shadow, every silence imposed without dialogue, is not a victory—it is a confession. A confession that truth cannot be stifled, only delayed. With each punitive click, you dig deeper into the bedrock of credibility, crafting a chasm between your actions and the community’s trust.

@themarkymark, @buildawhale & Co,

How can you continue to downvote the truth, LOL? It’s almost comical how blatantly you attempt to suppress what cannot be hidden. The blockchain records everything—every action, every transaction, every move you make. Yet still, you persist in this futile game of trying to silence what is undeniable.

@themarkymark, @buildawhale, and Co: While our opinions may differ, on-chain transparency reveals repeated patterns of concern. Coordinated downvotes without explanation, 'farming' schemes (e.g., #buildawhalefarm), and adversarial engagement harm Hive’s community-driven ethos.

Key Issues to Address:

  1. Downvote Practices: Silencing dissent erodes trust. Constructive dialogue, not punitive curation, fosters growth.
  2. Accountability: Transactions and curation trails are public. Scrutiny is inevitable—integrity demands addressing concerns openly.
  3. Community Impact: Driving users to platforms like Blurt/Steemit weakens Hive. Creators seek ecosystems that value collaboration over conflict.

A Path Forward:

  • Engage in open discussions about governance and fairness.
  • Audit curation practices to align with Hive’s decentralized values.
  • Prioritize transparency—publish explanations for downvotes or collaborative reforms.

The Bilpcoin team remains committed to exposing truth and advocating for solutions. Let’s work toward healing, not division.

Note: All claims are based on publicly verifiable blockchain data. Constructive dialogue is encouraged.

#HiveTransparency #CommunityFirst #BilpcoinSupport"

@themarkymark & Co, the choice is yours. Stop the bad downvotes. Turn off the BuildaWhale scam farm. Cease playing with people’s livelihoods. Let Hive thrive as it was meant to—as a beacon of hope, creativity, and collaboration.

Or step aside and let those who truly care take the reins.

Because the truth won’t disappear. No amount of lies can change it.

It’s over.

The Bilpcoin team brings these truths not out of malice but necessity. We have no need to fabricate lies or cloak our intentions CALL US WHAT YOU LIKE —for the facts speak loudly enough on their own. What we present here is not conjecture but reality, laid bare for anyone willing to see.

@themarkymark & Co we urge you once more: STOP. Stop hiding behind tactics that harm others. Stop clinging to practices that erode trust within the Hive community. Let the truth stand—not because we proclaim it, but because it exists independent of any one person’s approval or disdain.

TURN OFF THE BUILDAWHALE SCAM FARM

  • STOP THE BAD DOWNVOTES
  • STOP PLAYING WITH PEOPLE’S LIVELIHOODS

Key Issues That Demand Immediate Attention:

The problems are glaring, undeniable, and corrosive to the Hive ecosystem. They must be addressed without delay:

  • Downvote abuse
  • Farming schemes
  • Speaking disrespectfully to others
  • Encouraging people to avoid certain users out of personal dislike
  • Self-voting with alt accounts
  • Self-funding projects through self-votes
  • Promoting games that don’t even exist (LOL)

These practices harm not just individual users—they undermine the very foundation of Hive, eroding trust and poisoning the community. Such actions are unethical and outright destructive.

Good day my fellow HiveNaija people. This is my honest opinion and I would touch on the two.So sit down and hold your popcorns, for it is a bit long.

Let us start with the first question. The idea here is: When old posts from famous people, like politicians, celebrities, or influencers, pop up online and have really bad, offensive, or harmful ideas (like racist comments, hate speech, or calls for violence), should we see them as showing who the person truly is right now? Should we judge them based on that past stuff as if it's still their real character?

There's a wise saying that goes "Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaketh."
This comes from the Bible (Matthew 12:34), and it means that what we say or write often shows what is really inside us,our true thoughts, feelings and beliefs. So,if someone posted something terrible years ago, it might have come from a bad place in their heart at that time. But does that mean it's still true today? Let's break this down step by step in simple terms.

First, think about why these old posts resurface.Social media is like a permanent record, nothing truly gets deleted. In Naija, we've seen this happen with celebrities or politicians. For example, an old tweet from 10 years ago might pop up during an election or a scandal and people start asking, "Is this who you really are?" The saying about the heart and mouth makes sense here because words don't just come out of nowhere. If someone wrote something harmful, it likely reflected their views back then. And if they haven't changed or shown regret, maybe that "abundance of the heart" hasn't fully shifted.Judging them today based on that could be fair because it holds them accountable for the harm their words might have caused.Words can hurt people, spread hate, or even lead to problems like division in society.

But hold on,people do change.Life teaches us lessons.Maybe the person was young, immature, or influenced by bad company when they posted that. In Naija culture, we value growth and second chances,we say "person wey no know today go know tomorrow." If we always judge someone by their worst past moment, we're not giving room for improvement. However, the key is,Has the person owned up to it? If they apologize sincerely, explain how they've learned, and show better actions now, then maybe the old post isn't a true reflection of who they are today. But if they ignore it, defend it, or keep acting the same way, then yes,it might still show their character. The heart doesn't change overnight without effort.Simi a popular Naija Musician comes to mind. But let's leave that for now.

In addition,In today's cancel culture, sometimes people dig up posts just to destroy reputations, not for justice. But harmful views aren't just jokes they can damage communities, especially in diverse places like Naija where tribal or religious tensions are real.If a public figure's old post promoted something immoral like sexism or xenophobia and they haven't distanced themselves from it, judging them accordingly protects society. It says, "We won't let leaders or influencers spread poison without consequences." In short, for the first question,I think old posts should be taken seriously as a possible reflection of character today, but not automatically.Use the saying as a guide; What the mouth (or keyboard) said came from the heart, so investigate if the heart has changed.Judge based on evidence of growth, not just the post alone. This way,we promote real change while keeping people honest.

Now, for the second option: Yes, people should be given grace and space to grow beyond their old online mistakes.Nobody is perfect and the internet makes it easy to say dumb things that haunt us forever. But accountability must come first before full grace. Why you may ask?Because without owning the mistake, growth isn't real,it's just hiding. Accountability means admitting the wrong, making amends (like apologizing publicly or supporting affected groups) and changing behavior.Once that's done, grace allows healing and moving on. If we skip accountability, harmful ideas linger, and victims feel ignored. In Naija terms, it's like saying "sorry" before expecting forgiveness, and you know,it builds trust and shows true heart change.

@therichking ,@ozibaby @sam.hangout

0E-8 BEE

Omo enh, you've really done great justice to the topic, even citing biblical passages to pass the message across.
And like you said, people grow. If such a person has grown an had proven to be a changed person then we should allow them be, it was their past, still they should be held accountable for any harm or hurt their post might have done.

👍

0E-8 BEE

Thank you, my friend. You see, these two words; accountability and responsibility are needed in making a sane society.Do have a wonderful day.

(edited)

You suppose put topic and tag , post is ready ,ehyy 🤣🤣

0 BEE

But sammy put it up there already,if i get you correctly?

0E-8 BEE

Just like Jesus accept us back when we repent from our wrong and went to him for forgiveness and change. Everyone deserves a second chance. You said well

0E-8 BEE

You said it all 🤗

Why judge people by their past post?
We all have one thing or the other we aren't proud or boostful about that we posted in the past, things we posted on the media before growing up , things we posted while exploring different media platforms just to feel among and they don't define who we are now.

Growth happens and it happens to everyone, using the current trend about Simi, Simi is grown now and obviously a new person, I don't see any reason why she should be judged by a mere post in the past not even an action.
That was what she posted years ago, a young youth that didnt realize that "the Internet never forgets" and didn't even know she will be a public figure in the future, but she's obviously a better person now and even a mother.
We should judge people by their present behavior and repetitive behavior, judging by the past doesn't seem fair to me, people grow, change and become better versions of themselves.

Growth or past mistakes doesn't take away the fact that she should be held accountable too, she was 24 not 17.
If there are real victims of this her old tweets, Simi should be held accountable and face the law too, because if this was coming from a male public figure, women will demand for that too, until a real victim with good evidence speaks up , it's just a past post to me though.

Come and share your opinion
@marsdave
@goldenproject
@afrikens
@yechee
@justola1
@therichking , been awhile though, I hope you are good.

0E-8 BEE

Beautiful.
I actually love your take on this...
We grow and we learn. And this is a lesson to everyone to be mindful of whatever they do online, cos like you also said, "Internet never forgets."

And I as well agree that a person shouldn't be judged by their past post, if they've changed. They should be held accountable though.

0E-8 BEE

Very wonderful submission. I have less to say as this captures 80% of what I think. Happy weekend , Vanny.❤️

0E-8 BEE

Good day! I love your summary, but I must differ a little on the Simi case and here's why.During the Mirabel incident, Simi tweeted that all rapists should be castrated. In her comment section, someone pointed out that men deserve justice too when falsely accused.Simi
replied "STFU!" (Shut the f*** up!).

You know Naija "diggers" they unearthed her old tweets from her daycare days, and they're deeply disturbing.People don't even need someone to come forward and accuse her of those tweets; has she really change? her latest reply alone speaks volumes.NAPTIP has now invited her because of those tweets, you can imagine. So we really need to be careful growing up, especially during those exuberant stages of life(public figures most especially), or things might come back to haunt us, just like in her case.Anyway, do have a wonderful day!

0E-8 BEE

I very well get your point sir, talking of the fact that she's even of age as at those times.

I wasn't following the case though, just getting to know that she's been invited over.

But like you said, we all need to be very careful of the things we do/post especially on the internet.

Thanks

👍

0E-8 BEE

You tagged everyone but me 😌

0E-8 BEE

If not that she came out apologizing, I would never believe those tweets was from her. Really growth hapoens

0E-8 BEE

No owanbe today ooo, just home doing one or two. House chores never ending, lol

0E-8 BEE

We can tell that world keeps evolving and with this there are things that seems normal years back but aren't normal anymore nowadays, marriage of our parents then, what they call marriage is seen as maltreatment, wickedness and oppression nowadays and we are rewriting the meaning. So as some tweet and post on social media made by people are sensitive and immortal to the society nowadays but then it is as seen as cruise as everyone believes someone in a bad act will not come and tell the world but as the world evolved alot has happened that has opened our eyes to how wicked and inhuman some human can be. So we hold one accountable if anything surface online whether new or old now.

The only thing I would say is we shouldn't judge people by their past, if they are now a change person, if they come out to admit it and ask for forgiveness, then I don't see the need to drag such person anymore.

0E-8 BEE

Smiles...
You've said it all Mama. We've evolved and things have changed. So far the person has proven to be a changed person and their tweets and post no longer carry that old energy and such, we should take it easy with them. But we all know these diggers of the past do not care if you've changed or not.

Best is just to be mindful of what we do and post
👍

0E-8 BEE

Diggers are just there for cruise and lost humanity already. It is well. May God always guide every step and words of ours
