A Simple remembering about childhood brings immense joy to the heart. Back then, we had fewer material comforts, yet our happiness knew no bounds. Having a color TV at home was considered a luxury; not everyone owned personal televisions or mobile phones. The entire family would watch the same TV and share meals together.
During holidays, we would head out in the morning to play with friends and return home only for meals. Immediately after eating, we would rush back outside. We played with all the neighborhood children. Those games taught us valuable lessons about friendship, sharing, and patience.
However, the situation has changed completely now. Smartphones are visible in everyone's hands. Children spend hours watching YouTube Shorts and Reels. One video leads to another, and then another—we often lose track of time entirely.
When we watch a video we enjoy, the brain's reward system is activated. A chemical messenger called dopamine plays a crucial role in this process. The constant stream of new videos fuels our curiosity about what might appear next. What begins as a plan to watch for just a short while often turns into hours of viewing. For some, this can lead to issues such as a waning interest in studies and difficulty concentrating on tasks. However, the impact varies from child to child. The good news is that habits can be gradually changed.
On the other hand, parents are often afraid to let their children go outside. They worry about potential accidents caused by heavy traffic or the lack of safe playgrounds. If children aren't allowed out, they stay indoors and become accustomed to using phones.
In view of this hardship, simply snatching the phone away from the child is not the answer. Instead, provide age-appropriate toys like building blocks, puzzles, balls, and skipping ropes. Create a safe environment for them to play at home. Whenever possible, take them to parks and provide opportunities for them to play with other children.
Above all, parents should also put aside their phones for a while and spend time with their children, because children tend to emulate our habits more than they follow our words.
We cannot fully return to the childhood experiences of the past, but we can still ensure children enjoy the happiness of childhood in today's world.
There is no need to shun technology entirely; instead, we should teach children to use it in moderation and only when necessary. Because the greatest gift we can give children isn't a smartphone—it's the opportunity to grow up healthy, play freely, and spend happy times with family!
As for today, I started with a morning walk and wrapped up the day with office work and a meal at home.
