Happy holidays in health and connection πŸŽ„πŸ’™

Sunday, 24th of December 2023 [109]

Wherever in the world you are and whether you celebrate Christmas or celebrate different ways or are a bit of a Christmas Grinch I wish you a happy, healthy and peaceful holidays, hopefully spent with family, friends or alone if that is how you like to celebrate.

For quite a few years I did my best to ignore Christmas. I never really liked them much anyway, as my family is a bunch of weird folk and we seem to love arguing in this festive season.

From time to time I would crave a huge family Christmas celebrations. I’d travel to Poland to satisfy that craving, but I soon realised that the bigger the gathering the more fuss about it all, the bigger chances for arguments and tears, even if I myself was not involved in them.

With time I’d opt for smaller and quieter Christmas spent just with my ex husband. Needless to say that when I split up with him, the traditional way of spending Christmas slowly disappeared from my life.

β€˜Christmas are for children’ - I’d say to myself. Since I had none, I decided it will be easier to put on the Christmas Grinch hat and socks on and ignore it all.

Ok… there was more to it. I also loathed the traffic around Christmas and the whole shopping madness, as well as Christmas decorations available for sale as early as before Haloween. The Christmas became more about spending money and the competition rather than a peaceful time spent enjoying time off work with loved ones.

So I let go and in the process I became just a little bitter about it all. My next (also ex) partner very much shared my view for Christmas. Yes, we visited family and enjoyed time with them, but without gifts and decorations and going over the top.

Once I was on my own again I did my best to ignore it all. I’d tell one friend that I spent this time with another one and that other one that I spend it with yet another one and I made sure to call my parents for xmas eve, then hide away from it all, checking when the next salsa party is happening πŸ˜†

Whether you choose to celebrate or ignore it all, you can’t really escape that festive season no matter what. Unless you lock yourself indoors starting from November. Majority of people are deep into celebrating Christmas and decorations are all around us, making it hard to ignore.

In Gliwice, where I went for Christmas shopping the Christmas tree was huge and beautiful. I couldn’t resist taking a few captures of it… from far away at first, then from up close, from one since and from another. There was lots to capure there!

When I approached it from the opposite side of the road I was a little confused as to whether it’s the same tree. I remembered the huge red baubles, but they were nowhere to be see from this perspective.

Only when I walked closer to it I realised it was done on purpose to have that effect. On that side it really looked like a different tree.

What does Christmas Grinch do capturing the Christmas decorations all of the sudden? I’d like to say that it’s just to enter qurator’s photo quest this week, but in fact, I took those pictures before I saw the announcement post.

What actually happened is I decided to let go… not let go of Christmas and traditions and ignore it all as I have done in the past year. I decided to let go of my preferences, cause according to the book I’m currently reading, the preferences are the root of all our unhappiness and anxiety.

It’s hard to let go of all of them at once, but I decided to let go of one preference at a time and see how/if it affects the way I feel. A part of me resisted coming home for Christmas, but another part asked when will I have another opportunity to spend 3 weeks with my aging parents? My company it’s closed for a week at this time of the year and by booking 2 weeks off just before Christmas I can have an extended holiday to really unwind.

Christmas or not, I decided to take 3 weeks off and spend them with my parents. Weirdly enough this made me feel a little Christmassy and I went shopping to pick up Christmas pyjamas for all 3 of us, as well as gifts for my nieces and sweet treats for everyone I’d be visiting at that time.

I wasn’t overly keen on decorating Christmas tree, but dad got all excited and dumped the tree and decorations in my room a day too early, as he thought Christmas eve was yesterday πŸ˜‚

It was a very funny day. We laughed a lot when he almost finished all of his xmas eve cooking and asked my mum if she bought fish yet. She said she’ll do so tomorrow and only then he realised that it was 23rd and not the 24th yet πŸ˜‚ As a result I had my favourite dish ready to eat ahead of Christmas. Not moaning at all!

The kept on the tradition of decorating Christmas tree up on the Christmas eve though. Not cause I’m so traditional, but because I’m so lazy! The preference to do things β€˜later’ rather than β€˜sooner’ is still very much a thing. Hopefully the one to leave sooner rather than later!

This post has been written as an entry to this week’s #qurator’s photo quest. To participate click the link -> with announcement and rules and make sure to follow them all!

Until next time πŸ’™

Great pictures! You did much more than I did! Since my son is grown I really didn't bother to decorate. I'm single too so decorating for just myself didn't make much since. You did a great job!

I know the feeling fren. When you’re single and have no family nearby it feels like a pointless exercise to decorate for a few days and then take it all down. Best not to bother, but at times I did miss them I remember. Happy I have decided to change things round a little this year.

Is your son coming over with a visit for Christmas? πŸŽ„πŸ’™

It sure is Bob. I was playing gamble with my health this past year, but the incident with allergies and anxiety made me reevaluate everything.
I let my diet be a bit more loose while in Poland, but I can notice the change in how I feel almost immediately. Glad I kept the exercise up, but once I’m back home I’m back to strict diet and even more exercise. I have no children to look after me when I’m old, so I need to stay as healthy as possible if I want to enjoy my life πŸ˜ŠπŸ’™

I hear you Monica. I have been putting some health issues off that need attention. To the most part it is not wanting any more health debt. Insurance pays a lot but not all. When it comes to dental my insurance is horrible. I probably need some physical therapy for my shoulder and again insurance will only cover so many visits. Also some other things I need to have done, need a visit with Dr. Ferry as well if you know what I mean, haha.

Dr Ferry? I’m not familiar πŸ˜‚

But I do hear you about health insurance. I tend to all my dental needs when in Poland and needless to say it’s all private, but still cheaper than if I wanted to do the same things back in uk. This month I left more than Β£300 at the dentist. Was meant to be 1 tooth, but it turned out 5 needed new fillings πŸ™ˆ My poor diet showed its ugly face in many ways this year and I really need to focus on healthier ways in all ways.

Please don’t save on your health Bob. It’s so important. Once that goes, it’s little we can do πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸ’™

I won't I will make appointments and get ready to be my old self again but with a new feel 😊 Dentist are crazy aren't they. Well I had a filling break recently but I'm afraid I have a root canal in one of my teeth, might be that one actually. Hopefully that's it but won't know until I sit in the chair.

Dr. Ferry referring to colonoscopy, haha. Every guys dream visit. Shoulder is probably first on my list because it hurts no matter what motion I make with arm, it's my dominant arm as well.

2024 for us to take better care of ourselves Monica πŸ‘

Root canal treatments are neither fun nor cheap, I had a few of those done in the past. But it is worth to save as many as our own teeth for as long as possible for sure πŸ‘Œ

Yesss to more healthy versions of both of us. This year made me realise how important that is on a very deep level. Your arm hasn’t got any rest then as you’re driving daily. Get it looked up asap Bob. Some rest might also be needed for it to recover πŸ’™

Thanks Monica. Soon I will get all this scheduled. I can't bear the shoulder much longer so it's on my very near radar. I have had one root canal, the last time it was nearly $1700. So far it's not aching too bad. The last time I waited to long I was using oral gel way too much. I remember applying right before bed and trying to fall asleep before it's effect ended

OMG! That’s a lot more money that it would even cost in UK. It’s probably half of this and back in Poland maybe $200. Didn’t know dental bills were so crazy in states!

I’m glad I decided to do it this time, although after all the pre-Christmas activities I pretty much slept most of Christmas πŸ˜‚ I’m so wiped out and wanna be well rested for my long drive back home on the 28th.

I’m happy you like my socks! These are my favourite 🀩

Also glad I had some time for writing, while I’m here, but the 4 days streak was enough πŸ˜‚ Maybe I’ll write one more before going back home, then off to big NYE party 😁

Wow! I am glad the Grinchy in you Monika did not win.... Haha.... There is still that Christmas spirit that is alive and innate in you look at how the lovely your Christmas tree is, the culmination of you being tugged by your dad's, do it now already!! Don't wait for tomorrow!!! Go on chop chop!😍😁
Being with our Love one's is truly what Christmas is all about.
Here in my country usually people put up Christmas decorations beginning Sept. First... Haha... Talk about being not so excited right?!!
So when you said you put up your tree December 23rd??
That's already super duper late for us Filipinos....πŸ˜…πŸ˜…

Sending some Christmas cheers my friend across the many miles!πŸ₯°β€οΈ

In September? Wow 🀩 That’s so early πŸ˜‚

September is still harvest time, going back to school for children, picking up mushrooms from the forest, then visiting graves in October and even beginning of December is early for Christmas decorations πŸ˜‚ Christmas tree decoration has been a tradition in my family for years, but here too things change and Christmas decorations are present in Poland for the whole of December. Maybe it’s good to enjoy them for longer.

Funny thing though, I always thought you were Spanish, not Filipino πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸ˜‚

Happy Boxing day sis! πŸŽ„πŸ’™

Haha, a thoroughbred Filipina sisπŸ˜πŸ˜†
Yeap, we celebrate Christmas so early, we call it the BER months so on SeptemBER first which is the first month of the BER months you can already feel the Christmas cheers all over the country... I guess we are in the Guinness book on the country that celebrates Christmas the most.😍😍

I think it's good because the vibe of Christmas can be felt everywhere, you can hear Christmas songs played everywhere, so if you are sad the spirit of Christmas will kinda cheer you up! Even if there are still other celebrations like the All soul's day which is on November first, Christmas mingles with the rest of the festivities.... Well, the main essence of Christmas is about giving and loving so people tend to do it.

You too Monika, happy unboxing!πŸ₯°πŸ˜˜
