Hello Foodies!
There has been lots of talk for some time going around that we should avoid seed oils from our diet. In Germany it is called Rapsöl, which is basically canola oil in the US or vegetable or sunflower oil in the UK.
From what I can get, the gist is that this oil is toxic and used to be used as a lubricant in cars and now due to peak fiat, where companies always cut costs and substitute cheaper and lower quality products in everything, now these seed oils are in everything. This is because it is apparently really cheap to produce and is very abundant.
In my ever ongoing quest to improve my health and diet, I therefore decided to try and cut seed oils as best I could from my diet. However, it is not easy as it is in almost everything! Even some of my favorite foods such as Hummus, although I know you can make yourself with olive oil maybe. Although according to the seed oil influencers, this is also bad because it is often mixed with seed oils. Therefore, I also try to avoid olive oil too.
Checking the ingredients I also saw things like mayonaise is like 80% seed oil too! There is no getting away from it. So some of the promises of avoiding seed oils are that you will lose weight, gain energy and just feel great again like the time 50 years ago when everybody was thin no matter what they ate. I hope this is right as I need to lose a few pounds.
I did read a book called wheat belly which said the same thing about modern wheat. So maybe they both are bad? Currently I do not avoid so much bread although I should do. As you can see I quite enjoy some bread with butter when eating home made soup. Here I was treated to a sour gherkin soup even though it is summer time.
I don't know how to make soup, but do enjoy it when someone makes for me. Most people are using seed oils for frying too, after a month without seed oils, I have noticed that food tastes better when not fried in seed oils and it is much less greasy. Once you have been a week without seed oils, I noticed I started preferring to have my food not greasy and it seemed to taste better fried with butter rather than oils.
Even today, I had the choice to eat some coleslaw salad mixed with mayonnaise and it just looked all greasy and soggy and unattractive compared to one without. Maybe it is not such a big thing and I am just finding something. I used to think food was all too dry and not nice, but suddenly things feel different.
I did notice when frying some eggs (which I didn't eat for a long time) as I was vegan for a few years that they looked and tasted far better fried in butter. My wife was even asking me to make for her too as her oil ones seemed to burn and look greasy and not so nice tasting.
For frying things, I switched to butter which I found overall better and flavor enhancing. It is more expensive, but I think worth it for the taste alone. The other thing is to try and avoid foods with oils in them, either added by yourself or processed foods.
Hummus and mayo were two big ones I noticed first, but there are quite a few others, lots of sauces and many processed foods. Restaurants are another one to beware of. For example, I quite like fries, but these are fried in seed oils and apparently in the past was used beef tallow. According to the seed oil grifters on Xitter, mostly animal fats were used 50 to 100 years ago and now it is all seed oils and this is causing inflammation and ill health.
So far I didn't notice too much in the way of weight loss or anything from avoiding seed oils, but I also haven't been doing too much sport either. I need to probably refine my diet much more which I plan to do and not eat so many unhealthy things.
Although I do feel a little bit better energy wise, I am not sure that is due to lack of seed oils or vitamin C pils or better sleep that I am getting recently, it is hard to say. Considering seed oils are supposed to be anti-metabolic, that could be partially the reason, but more time is needed to tell.
The more I reject foods with seed oils, the easier it gets and I therefore hope to keep my experiment running for longer. When I was vegan I was eating a lot of fruits and this seemed to be not so good for my stomach, especially acid wise and digesting, even though fruit is supposed to be the best for us. It is something I do not understand exactly.
Something I have tried to also do is stop eating in the evenings with some success and this is a good habit to try and get into as I often found I was looking to eat something sweet. This would usually be some processed food of some sort and this is not what you want to do before sleeping soundly.
Trying to improve your health and dietary choices is an ongoing battle and making tweaks each day to try and improve is my current method. I hope once I am fully settled with seed oils removed, I can make my next upgrade and step ever closer to better health.

Oder Fleisch erst beim servieren rein

Ich habe versucht Suppe zu kochen, aber es hat nicht so gut geklappt. Ich weiß nicht, ob ich ein Suppe Chef bin. Ähnlich lasse ich die Finger Weg von backen, aber meine Frau und Tochter backen sehr gerne..

Do I think it is safe? Probably. Do I think it is healthy? Likely not. I try to stick with olive oil anyway and I have been using a lot more avocado oil lately.
That probably makes sense Bozz. My wife was recommending to me avocado oil, it is supposed to be much healthier.
That' pretty much all we use for the Blackstone now and then we use olive oil for everything else. We still have some canola oil in the cabinet, but it's pretty rare we use it.

Oil, cooking fat is such a difficult one. It really seems to come and go what the 'best' choice is. Not too long ago I did try out sunflower oil for the higher cooking temperature and it was okay but, really, my cooking is 99.9 % olive oil, extra virgin olive oil based. But I will admit that frying in butter is - special. It really is. But animal fat is bad for cholesterol and hubby has bad cholesterol genetically. So, olive oil it is. We still have butter here because I switched to butter (from margerine) - oh - twentyfive years ago or so. Less processed = better.
Have you tried making mayonnaise yourself? It is not too difficult. The main thing is that all ingredients need to have room temperature. What is also great is a cashew nut mayo or avocado - so many possibilities!

It really is a difficult one and like you I was using olive 🫒 oil to fry. However one of my healthy friends mentioned I should switch to avocado (she is vegetarian) but still didn't try avocado oil yet.
I know what you mean about cholesterol and using butter. It does make things taste good though.
That's a good idea with mayonnaise, I am sure some healthy homemade variations would be really nice and I might give that a try along with some hummus.
Yes, hummus is also easy to make at home, as are so many things but they take one ingredient that nobody seems to have - time.
I think I'm done trying different oils and will just stick to nice virgin or extra virgin olive oil.

In India we use sesame seed oil for both external as well as internal. We have been doing that for generations and haven't thought of it creating any health issues. Maybe too much can create health issues.
In some parts of India they consume groundnut oil (peanut oil) for cooking. But they usually say that we have to do enough physical activity to break down the oil. But mostly in villages, people work in fields and they easily do a lot of physical activity to break down the consumed oil.
But I think that only too much creates health issues and otherwise it is fine.
That is interesting to know. I am not sure if seed oils are solely to blame for our modern health issues, but hope my experiment will bring some benefits.
According to some of the seed oil guru's, even if you were not so active in the past, the weight gain was less proficient as you didn't eat seed oils. However maybe they didn't consider in India where it was consumed much longer so the argument could be flawed.
Is Ayurvedic medicine very common in India too?
Yes, Ayurvedic medicines are popular in India as Ayurveda originated only in India.
I guess seed oil is safe since they're from edible plants, not sure though if people like it..
It is heavily processed to make it safe to eat apparently. That's what makes me unsure.

This is the first time I have heard that seed oil is problematic. The basic oil in my house is olive oil, and the kind we have at home is only from the fruit, not the seeds.
But what about sunflower oil, which is made from seeds? I have not seen anything that is controversial anywhere.
Or rapeseed oil? I have read that in the past, it was harmful because it contained erucic acid, which has been shown in animal studies to harm heart health. But now they are filtering it out.
Otherwise, I'm an omnivore :)
That sounds pretty good if you are using olive oil mostly. As this is pressed and not from seed.
I think seed oils is coming up alot recently due to the high consumption and that people are linking it to negative outcomes, even when it it is filtered for toxicity.
It is believed that it is highly inflammatory and was used as a lubricant in cars before. It also slows your metabolism causing weight gain. I do not know if the claims are true or not and I have just been trying to exclude it for a month so far, but the seed oils seem to be everywhere in processed foods which sort of then makes sense.
This is information that is mostly not on my radar screen! This is something I need to look at. Thanks!

I’ve never eaten seed oil before but I feel it is meant to be safe
if you have eaten any sauce or fries, usually this is seed oils.
I avoid them as well, and I'm avoiding fried food as much as possible as well. I too prefer to use butter if I'm frying something, it tastes better to be honest. I do use extra virgin olive oil buy never with frying, it's a healthier for consumption.
Are they safe? It depends on which study you happen to read. I don't think there has been enough research done correctly to answer that question as of yet.
Im glad its not just me that is checking these things out. It is not easy to try and eat healthy these days. It seems you have got things well under control there.
Not as much as I would like, but I strive to eat healthy since I'm not exactly 21 anymore...
I have been using butter wherever possible for years. It made a comeback and is not as bad as all the health experts told us.
The problem is the health experts don't really know. Give it a few decades and the advice will change again.
Just look at EV cars and the damage that mining for battery components is doing, it is outrageous and nothing being said about it. Remember when diesel cars came in, it was supposed to be great for the environment.
Oils well, I think if you press your own olives then it is fine. But they cut things with whatever they can to make as much as profit as possible. Look at the Chinese rice companies getting caught adding plastics to bulk up the rice
You are right Ed, no one knows what we should eat and things change and are promoted to profit certain business interests.
I didn't realise they were mixing olive oil with vegetable oil, but it certainly makes sense as why would you mix "olive oil" together! LOL. I am getting more skeptical and trusting these charlatans less and less!

Yeah, it might not be for everyone.
I have cut out restaurant food, my food is 99% cooked, I cut out junk too, and have incorporated more fruits, especially the ones with less sugar, however I still do consume some seed oil as olive oil is scarce and a lot expensive, my aim when I have enough money is to stock on some expensive olive oil. I think it's 89% unavoidable in Nigeria, but if you cook your food you'll not really have too much of it in your diet
