Unwrapping Culture: How My Heritage Shapes My Worldview

Growing up in a home that didn't do much with tradition didn't stop me from learning about my culture because my environment and the people I had around didn't let me grow without learning a thing or two from them. I remember when I was little, every encounter with a new friend of same culture, I would learn something new about them.

Honestly, the journey to learning my culture and actually putting some to practice was not fun for me. The only fun part in my culture and that will still remain in my lifetime is, the music. I love music so naturally, I enjoy how unique my people sing songs in our language. I know a few of our songs and they all hold lovely memories for me.

Considering that I'm not that deep into the cultural way of life, I don't feel sad about it because I think culture goes beyond the language, festivals, the food (one of my favourite part) and other aspects that makes up the culture we all know in our heads. But what culture is that many do not think to see it as is, Building Morals.

The fact that I learned to show respect through my culture, live better with people through my culture and dress well through my culture, I'll say it's the major thing I appreciate my culture for. Not just my culture, I admire the yoruba culture for the same reason but with a few limitations. Culture has taught so much about morals really.

While people try to make me feel bad for not being able to speak the language of my culture, I remind myself that it isn't all that matters to uphold one's culture. I mean, it would have been great if I was good with my language but it didn't happen that way and I still appreciate every other aspects my culture has helped shaped me today.

I appreciate and love my culture for many reasons with the foods and morals they build as the top on my list but I also admire other cultures around and abroad. I've even admired the English culture at some point because I always wondered if they had any stuff like festivals as other cultures does, was shocked to know it's a culture.

The Korean culture is in my top five admired cultures in the world, from their foods to morals to festivals as seen in their movies, I love everything and even though I don't think I would ever participate in their festivals if I ever get the chance, I'll definitely love to watch from afar lol. Their foods are my top on the list to try out too.

Culture reminds me of how diverse and beautiful the world is, from the beautiful colours of native dressings, the sounds of different languages in music and conversations, the amazing tastes of different native meals, and the morals they are building or maintaining around the world is a beauty to behold, uphold and appreciate always.

I wonder how you will try out the food, lol. This is Hope. 🙂‍↔️

Well, it’s beautiful that you don’t let one part spoil the others for you. There are so many things our culture has taught us and they are helpful and constructive. The language part is painful but like you said, it’s not something that is in our control so we won’t let it stop us from appreciating the other aspects.

culture isn't just about language or festivals, but also about the morals and values we grow up with. It’s beautiful how you’ve embraced your own culture while also admiring others like the Yoruba and Korean cultures. Truly, culture shapes us in so many silent but powerful ways.

Yeah, glad we could have so many cultures around to uphold and admire.

Two Oniovos that cannot speak their language 🤣.... Somebody shout power ✊🏿. Really you've said it all o, culture goes beyond speaking of ones language. The other day one mumu said I should change my name to Misan as I couldn't express myself in Urhobo and I told him I am more Urhobo than you that is bearing Isaac.

PS
You girls are such a beauty to behold 😍

The way you pack your hair from behind is beautiful.

I think the Nigerian culture teaches morals, it's just that youth nowadays have coconut heads, and tend to do what they like. Culture is our way of life

Haha thanks for the compliment on my hair. 🤭

Lol for real, people are just too stubborn to follow moral rules.

I like the heartfelt reflection on what you said. How you appreciated your roots and what you learnt from other cultures. You balanced everything in a beautiful way. And as you said, culture goes way beyond language, food and it's not just tradition, it's our way of life and directly or indirectly it teaches us about our true identity, morals and memories.

And I think that's enough to uphold one's culture so long you know and try to maintain the values it teaches.

Lol we are praying together o 😅

Culture goes beyond just speaking the language. It's more of an understanding; their way of doing things, why they do so in a particular way, and the value they instill in people.

I was also born and bred in Lagos, and my family wasn't really into language, but I took it upon myself to learn and understand. I may not be fluent, but at least I can communicate, and I'm okay with it.

0.00103592 BEE

And that's perfect, I wish I tried to learn it like you did.

I believe that that is all about life. Learning new things from people when we get encounter with them. Some people are very stiff when it comes to their culture. They never want to learn other people's culture. But we need to learn from others.
