St Margaret's Hope on South Ronaldsay in the Orkney Islands Scotland

Hello Hello Hivians

It's Wednesday and that means that it's time to document and post another walk I took in Scotland.

Today though we are going to go back a couple of weeks to when we were on holiday in the Orkney Isles off the northern coast of Scotland.

More specifically, our walk is around the village of St Margaret's Hope which is the capital of the southernmost island South Ronaldsay in the Orkney Islands.

St Margaret's Hope.png

We had been visiting the amazing fossil museum on Burray in the morning or to give it its full title The Orkney Fossil and Heritage Centre.

6078 Orkney Fossil Museum fossil.png

The place was fantastic and there was so much more to it than just fossils!

Allegedly they have a fantastic Tea Room last year, so I decided we would have our lunch there and did not pack anything to eat. I had even been eyeing up what I wanted to eat from the menu.

6401 Fossil cafe closed.png

Do you see the wee (or peedie as the Orcadians say little) sign on the door frame ....

Sorry Cafe Closed.

I did ask why and was told that they could not get any staff... This was to be a common theme we found on holiday!

So plan B came into my head, and we decided to go to St Margaret's Hope the next island.

So outside we went.

I should have twigged about the Cafe I read the sign ... Do you see it?

6438 Fossil Shop Sign.png

They have blocked out the Cafe between Museum and Shop!

One good thing about island life is that you just flag down a bus.

6414 Orkney Burray to St Margarets Hope barrier.png

That is South Ronaldsay in the background, you get there crossing the last Churchill Barrier.

The Hope as the locals call St Margaret's Hope was just over that hill, but fluffed if we were walking in the heat!

Whilst we waited for the bus, we got to see some horses who were enjoying the high life.

6433 Orkney ponies 2.png

If this was your view would you not be looking it at it too?

6425 Okney 2 ponies sea view.png

This now reminds me of @ifarmgirl who always want to try horse riding but so far as not managed it. Do read her answer post Ride a Horse and Gallop Away For an Adventure in response to the Silver Bloggers community current Silver Prompt - New Theme for Saturday July, 8
6436 Orkney Shetland pony.png

In fact now I think of it, you love wee CJ so here is a Shetland pony for you!

For those of you who don't know Shetland is a group of Scottish islands even further north than Orkney!

66442 South Ronaldsay snap.png

There are numerous ferry routes into Orkney.

6451 St Margaret's Hope Ferry terminal.png

St Margaret's Hope is one of the shortest crossings to the Scottish mainland.

6445 Orkney Pentalina ferry.png

Earlier in the year, one of the ferries on this route ran aground. Actually the Captain beached it as the ferry had mechanical problems, rather than drift and cause problems he beached it to be safe.

Can you guess the name of the ferry?

6444 Orkney Pentalina close up.png

Yes it was PENTALINA

I think I will pass on sailing on her...

6452 Orkney St Margaret's Hope propellor.png

Mrs T then wondered if that propellor was the reason for the troubles 🤣

6446 Orkney St margaret's Hope corner house .png

We were starving and decided to take one more shot then go find food!

6450 Orkney St Margaret's Hope wee boat.png

I think sea food was in order!

6449 Orkney St Margaret's Hope second fishing boat.png

All these fishing rods, I was itching to do some fishing!

image.png

What a fluffing quaint shop...

image.png

The Old Trading Post

That seemed to sell groceries, fine thought I, in we pop and I will make us a packed lunch ...

Remember I said the locals called the village Hope just look at all the posters with Hope this or Hope that...

image.png

Actually it was great, you could tell this was a real community, and this was a hub and Hive of activity!

image.png

I loved the Explorer feel, as many Orcadians were explorers especially in the Americas.

image.png

Don't you love the Post Box set in the wall!

Well it was no good, there was nothing in there to make a decent sandwich!

image.png

So it was time to trade the Trading Post for the Pub next door...

image.png

The Murray Arms ....

image.png

The fish was out of this world, done in Orkney beer batter!

image.png

It turns out the Trading Post is owned by the same family that own The Murray Arms hotel, so it would not matter where we went, the same family got out money...

When we got back to the AirBnb, out host said oh it is dear! Turns out the proprietors are her nieces...

"I usually go to Roberton's .. you should have gone there Edward!"

6456 Orkney St Margarets Hope Robertsons.png

The bus does a circular route into St Margaret's Hope, and Roberton's is at the top of the hill on the way out, so we never knew about it!

Ah well, it's on our list for our return!

image.png

This concludes St Margaret's Hope on South Ronaldsay in the Orkney Islands Scotland and is my post for this week's #wednesdaywalk challenge hosted by @tattoodjay in collaboration with #makemesmile hosted by @elizacheng.

Thanks for visiting and enjoy the rest of your day!

That fish looks great! You got some great photos in there, beautiful scenery and one huge beached ferry. Very cool stuff!

The fish was awesome, cooked in a beer batter, and fish caught on one of their two boats they own.

Ahh you didn't tell me that Orkney was this beautiful! Are there beaches too? Cause the sea was so inviting!
And horses there were more healthy compared to in Tagaytay. I even felt scared while riding🤣.
Now, I want some fries!

I told you it was beautiful, and the weather was perfect 🤣
There are gorgeous sandy beaches and children swim but too cold for me now!
Yeah the horses were cool and very healthy!

Fries I will make some especially for you tomorrow...

That place looks dreamy Super Ed.
That view! I could have laid there next to those ponies for hours. Too bad the tea room wasn't working but that gave you more opportunity to explore, hehe
And now tell me where I can get a fish like that without crossing the ocean, I'm starving and craving some batter fish.

Yeah I said the weather was out of this world, and when it is like that, there is no reason to go anywhere else. Yeah the view though, just mesmerising!
The tearoom, such a shame they had a really good menu too!
The fish hehe I have never seen fish cooked liked it in the Americas that is any good...
So your wee butt needs to come here Super Eli🔵💙🔵

Your collage photo drew me in! I'm here for the gorgeous horses, scenery, and boats on the bright blue water! @tengolotodo

St. Margaret's Hope was your saving grace for the day. The beer battered fish you ordered looks quite delicious! How financially smart to have all the area's highlights owned by the same family!

Thank you so much @ninahaskin , yeah there are quite a few islands in Orkney and they do tend to be dominated by one or two families on each island!
The fish was delicious but then it is also my favourite UK meal!
The sun was so bright and the water so blue, it was indeed a little piece of paradise.

Ah in all the states and cities I have been to in the States, they just cannot replicate fish and chips, I don't even bother anymore.
Orkney is a gorgeous place, it felt really great going back after so many years.

That does look like some mighty tasty fish! I am hoping to get some fish this weekend when we hit the road for our next trip. What an awesome little town. I love places like this. Those quaint little villages that have so much charm! What a fun place to explore!

ah, I hope you have better luck on the road this weekend!
Orkney is full of islands and many quaint little villages are a few houses. That was the third biggest town/settlement/village in Orkney.

Thanks! I hope so too! That is pretty cool. It looks like it would be a beautiful place to visit. I'm guessing not many places to stay there? Like you would just head there for a day trip?

There are lots of places to stay in the Islands, you can drive anywhere on the main island within a couple of hours at most so can find quite a few places if you look.
