Welcome to another Liotes Mission that is unfortunately a bit delayed this week. Sorry about that. Today, I would like to have your reaction in respect to what 3speak.tv has introduced lately. They have added an ad system to 3speak.tv videos where the income from these ads will be split in 3. 50% will go to the content creator, 40% to the platform and also there will be a percentage that goes to the watcher of the video. If you want to learn more about it, check out this post.
What do you think about having ads on 3speak.tv? Is it a step in the correct direction for hive?
Please leave your answer as a comment below this post. Like we did the first time, we will consider your suggestions and change the Liotes APR signal accordingly...
By taking part in the Liotes missions, you can win credits that will help you to increase your score and your title in the Liotes Ranking.
People who submit an answer will get 3 credits for the Liotes ranking.
We are very grateful if you enter the challenge within 24 hours after the post is published. We will try to count entries up to 36 hours after publication.

Thanks for all the feedback!
Gotta jump in here since I'm the one behind this ad thing - so yeah, I'm biased. But we had some solid reasons for going this route, even if it was not easy and a lot of what you wrote is fair. I collect my thoughts in one comment to make it easier for me so excuse the mass ping in one comment :P
@dewabrata it's live, judge us by what we deliver :)
@stresskiller I guess you just didn't hit a video with an ad yet ;) Ad blockers don't catch them right now, advertisers love that part obviously. But unlike YT you get paid for watching, so not the worst deal. Found a way to block them anyway? Tell me and I fix it lol
@tokutaro22 The burn idea is super cool, I'll throw it at the team and they will like that a lot I think ;)
@seckorama @proto26 @ervin-lemark @les90 @thebighigg not a big ads fan myself but I have to look at a platform as a user and a developer. Max 1 video roll ad interrupt per video, then the viewer gets a cooldown on that ad. The banners and ticker can be mulitples but they dont interupt the viewing as much. Creators can also just turn ads off if they feel that their content should not get interupted at all.
You know how many channels uploaded one pretty good video (or a post in general) and never came back? A lot. Low rewards for new users is a big part of that I think, and bigger web2 creators won't stick around for that either. We all got used to the one-time payout here (even though the value of Hive declined a lot since we joined). Rest of the internet isn't tho. @keithtaylor got the point: A video drives traffic to Hive since years and the creator got 1 USD once. And we tell people "own your content and own the rewards for it". Kinda funny, right? So share your old stuff again if it's good, it can still earn you something now. Viewer rewards are a bonus on top. @promete0sz nailed it better than I could, the people are already here. They read, they don't hit play, because there was nothing in it for them. And hey, maybe that's finally how we get the regular viewers everyone is talking about since years.
@palomap3 @jfang003 @hirohurl yeah audience is small and nobody gets rich tomorrow. It's an experiment. More users should come with it. Like @slothlydoesit said, it's money from outside Hive and we need that badly. Advertisers also have to buy on the exchanges for now, can't hurt the price.
And a personal note: I personally have spend weeks each on some of my old videos and guess what? I got max 5 usd paid once for them. We tend to undervalue that big efforts that can go into creating an engaging video. Most of the video content is "record - roll - post" but to create a video that is actually keeping the viewers watching is a whole different level. On Hive with all the voting trails and the short voting window, people dont put much efforts in their videos and post without even editing a small bit yet, which is a bummer. Video creation is an art form but many just record and forget. We need to appreciate good content even if its 1 year old. I hope this will change and we get more personality into the videos.
Thanks again for all the feedback and to @liotes for this post. It is always good to have the community share their ideas and opinions so we can improve what we do. But we all need to face reality and think out of our Hive-box to attract artists, creators, investors and regular viewers.
Thanks brother, as a video creator I completely understood it and it does fix things. This motivates me to get my past video reviews watched again so they don't end up buried and forgotten 🥹🥹👍🏻
i use several things to block them , in firefox i use ublock origin , but i also use custom DNS server addguard home with a lot of blacklists including add filters ,

ok some videos won't play any more because i don't allow google things to do , or simply because of my region blocking .
but i can life with that .
And there is also some browser extention "No Script" that blocks all java scripting until i allow it , adds and trackers no one really needs them.
Thanks a lot for your answer here. I think that we can't have all, expect a nice income for our content and not look at potential real income sources that don't depend on the hive inflation. So personally, I find it's a really great idea and I hope that we might find a bridge where external players could actually put ads on 3speak and build a kind of bridge with the outer world. This would bring very welcome external funds to the ecosystem.
Thanks, @tibfox! I agree with you: a creator who brings traffic to Hive for years and earns 1 USD once deserves better, and ads from outside advertisers are a good way to bring in new money. Making them optional for creators, with one video roll-ad at most and a viewer cooldown, seems to me the right balance.
As you know, I tried a short test ad: a 15-second video. I probably missed the statistics page, so I couldn't judge the return on it. Is there a page where an advertiser can see views and results? That would help me decide whether to try again.
I was also busy preparing a beautiful video for my dog's blog. I'll wait to publish it until the big 3speak news arrives, so it gets the most attention. Out of curiosity, will the new features arrive soon?

Grazie, @tibfox!

I think it is an interesting experiment, especially when I see that a lot of people have already received micro payments for viewing ads: https://peakd.com/@threespeak-pro/wallet
As a video creator, I like the idea of potentially earning ad revenue from my videos.
As an Internet marketer, I've had a look at the ad types and prices. The audience numbers are quite low but a campaign to promote something related to crypto (such as Satsman!) might deliver some results, or maybe even something more relevant to the Hive blockchain, such as promoting my Splinterlands guild...
It will be interesting to see if 3Speak ads really do pull in a lot of new people who want to promote their offers. I suspect only highly targeted campaigns have any chance of working on a 3Speak audience...

I totally agree with you. It's a real way to enlarge the ecosystem. So I'm all for it, be it for viewers, creators and advertisers..
I hate ads that interrupt the video. I don't mind ads that appear above or below the video. But having them interrupt the video just seems like corporate bullshit from YouTube to me.
Youtube only works because of the ads, without the ads, there would be no platform :-)
I think it's a good choice if they want 3speak to be sustainable. However, I am skeptical about how much they can generate from that. Ads don't seem to pay much, and unless they can land some direct deals, I can't see videos generating that much either.
That's the exact question that I also have. Because if we rely only on what comes from within the community, I don't think it will bring much to the ecosystem.
Hive needs to find more ways to bring in 'outside' revenue. We can't sustain this 'closed' economy, so it's nice to see 3speak making some changes and hopefully adding more rewards into the system for everyone!
I think more sites might follow suit, adding more ads, be it banners/videos or even audio ads; there's potential to bring more revenue into the Hive system and hopefully keep Hive buzzing towards a better future!
Personally, I hate ads, but I understand from a business point, they are the 'easiest' way for a platform to generate revenue. Let's hope it brings more users to 3speak and Hive overall!
!SLOTH and steady does it.
I totally agree and this is actually a door for that to happen.
at the moment, I think people on hive have too many ideas and what being delivered are not good lol...
So I don't care about the idea, just deliver it and show people how it works... let people decide later.
It's already in place and working :-)
It’s a good idea. You can earn $1000 a day with Ads on your YouTube Channel. It’s a great source of extra income to fund projects and developers…. Https://YouTube.com/OffgridTV

It's one more potential income source that I find quite great because it also gives a piece of the pie to the viewer. So it's a win-win for everybody involved.
Yes. I agree 100 % ….

Haven't seen them , won't see them , long time user of add blockers :)
Well I'm sure there are ways around the settings or just a browser for this purpose, so that you can earn while you watch liotes videos ;-)
if i watch them ... 😂
Prior to retirement, most of my income came from adverts and affiliate commissions. So I'm very much in favour of this 3speak initiative. And as @stresskiller points out, you don't need to see them if you don't want to (assuming ad-blockers work on 3speak as they seem to work everywhere else - I don't often use them).
The greatest benefit that I see is the ability to earn small rewards after the 7-day Hive window.
Posted via HiveSuite
addblocker also works on YT :) not every video will show but thats ok :)
It ads a motivation for people to make videos and also one for people to watch them. So, as long as we have enough advertisers, I think it might be a great thing.
I agree! But as I'm doing something similar with blog posts, I guess I have to 😀

This is the right way to grow a social network. I congratulate you on the initiative. I would like a small percentage—say, 5%—to go towards burning Hive.
That's a great idea!
It is a good way to increase revenue streams. Even YouTube has ads. :)
I would say, without ads there would be no youtube :-)
I think so too. Since I arrived on Hive back in 2022, I've been creating video-reviews because I'm great at both writing and video content creation 😊😊. Based on my years of experience with video—something few people here have since the vast majority only write and are too shy to show their faces on camera 😅😅—I've realized that Hive isn't currently the best place for video. The audience barely reads as it is, so they just leave comments without even hitting PLAY. You can easily tell by the views and comments you end up getting 🙃🙃
The 3Speak whale algorithm for dropping upvotes is also completely backward. I feel like its requirements haven't been updated in years, failing to adjust to the massive amount of people who used to be active but aren't anymore due to the market drought. I've had videos that genuinely met all the criteria, and the 3Speak whale bot still skipped them, so for years, I've been completely lost as to how it gives out likes 🙃🙃
Based on all of that, the Ads were focused on promoting clicking the PLAY button and encouraging the interaction of actually WATCHING the content, which increases views. I think this helps solve both of the problems I mentioned in the previous paragraphs. For my part, I'm happy for now with what 3Speak has implemented 😊😊👍🏻
That's a good point, which I hadn't considered. The ads may actually encourage rather than discourage views. 🧐

Yes, as a video content creator that's exactly what I want, for people to click that Play button, thats the purpose of a Video 🥹🥹👍🏻
I think that 3speak and hive can become a real niche place for people who want to do something else than youtube. So ads are a necessity in this aspect because it gives incentives to all parties involved and doesn't only rely on inflation based income.
I agree with the idea. A moderate and well-integrated advertising model could be interesting for platforms like 3Speak, especially if users perceive that the ads help fund the platform without turning the experience into a series of interruptions.
Also it's nice to say that you can earn something while watching the ads!
Hmm I rarely use 3speak so I have no view on this. :)
Well, maybe a reason to start using it lol
😂
Never been a big fan of ads personally. However, I do understand that some revenue needs to be generated to keep something profitable and sustainable. So if they help keep things running, I have no problem with them!
In the best case, we would have some people from outside promoting offers on hive and it would allow value to flow into the hive ecosystem.
Thanks for the mission, @liotes! 🙌 My answer: I'm in favor of ads on 3Speak, as long as they're done fairly. 📺
I even wrote a post proposing a prize contest for Hivers to test the new ads, with my own ad for Ca' Paradiso as an example! 😄
The key, in my view, is to keep ads non-intrusive (no endless pre-rolls) and transparent about how revenue is shared.
My question for you: what ad format would you find acceptable as a viewer, a short banner, a pre-roll, or a sponsored video? And do you think creators should be able to choose whether to show them? 🤔
Matteo - Ca' Paradiso, Cagli 🌿
www.caparadiso.com
When I think about the aspect that the viewer actually gets a part of the pie, I think that they might be quite actively watching them. So as long as it doesn't generates multiple pop-up's that might crash the browser. I'm all for it :-)
Thanks, @achim03! You're right: if viewers get a real share of the revenue, they have a reason to watch the ads. The no pop-ups condition is fair too. Ads should be light and shouldn't crash the browser, or they'll just push people away.
For me the best format would be a short banner or one short pre-roll, with creators free to choose whether to show them, so the audience isn't punished.
Would you accept a short pre-roll if you earned something for watching it, or do you prefer banners?
Matteo - Ca' Paradiso, Cagli 🌿

Grazie, @achim03!

I only watched videos from friends.... A few days ago i noticed that change too... Personally i feel boring with those ads but I think 3speak ads are something which give ads revenue to not only content creator but to those who watched those lazy ads too....
But I'm the one who prefer to skip ads 🙂💃🤣

Maybe an idea would be to have the option to opt in or out of ads...
Yeah and maybe the ads of our interest just like in web 2
it's interesting way to increase income assuming they can attract advertisers or the users within hive use to promote their content. Time will tell.

The biggest challenge in my opinion is to be able to attract external advertisers. That's exactly what I think would be the golden gate to income from outside of hive.
My first reaction is that it would be bad but I'm purely thinking about it just from a viewer perspective and how annoying it works be. I guess in theory it does sound good. We'll see if it actually works to help.
I think that it won't be like on youtube where there are 3 ads per video, we probably would get like one ad every 10 video :-)
TBH, my adblockers completely block all ads on Youtube and almost everywhere else. I understand the need for revenue generation and if that were the case, I'd be inclined to let ads run on services I like and support, if it wasn't something in my face.
Well, when you think that you get a share of the income from the ad as a viewer it might change the perspective :-)
I think it might be a good idea to start with just a few ads, because people need to understand that the ads are meant to support the projects, and since many of them don't have sponsors or anything like that, the ads can be a source of income—a way to generate some revenue for the projects.
In my opinion it's a win-win because creators earn long term from videos and watchers earn for watching them...
I saw how it works there—it's cool. I thought the ads were just for 3speak, but actually they keep 50% and we get to decide whether to keep the other 50% or share it with the community. I thought that was really cool.
I don't see the ads badly but I don't think there is enough volume of users to give performance.
I think people interact or will interact for the reward, which is why the ad approach can actually work by drawing the volume of people who only "read" into actually "watching". That's exactly what's missing—the volume is there, it's just that they only "read" because there was no reward for watching 🫠🫠. In a video, the true interaction is for it to be watched 🥹🥹👍🏻
Reproducir un video no es lo mismo que verlo. Y sí, la gente irá donde haya recompensas, siempre tratarán de exprimir y sacar el máximo provecho.

But it's a start where it becomes more interesting for everybody to be involved.
I don't like ads in general. They are annoying, repetitive, algorithm based, ...
As for 3speak, I guess they thought it out and decided for it. It is their call anyways.
!BEER
The fact that 50% go to creator and a share goes to viewer, I think it ads an incentive to all parties involved.
I think that incorporating an advertising system in 3speak.tv is an interesting strategy.
The idea of splitting revenue between the creator, the platform and the viewer is innovative and could encourage more participation and creation of content.
However, it is important that the ads do not interfere too much with the user experience.
