Billions of Dollars and One Question: How Safe Is Our Money?

Billions of Dollars and One Question: How Safe Is Our Money?

Most people who follow crypto have probably already heard the reports about an attack on Binance. According to media reports, around $6.3 billion worth of assets was stolen from the exchange.

Not millions. Billions!

Reading about an amount like that, I expected some serious panic. Yet the reported market drops were smaller than I had imagined. Around $3 billion was reportedly frozen, and Binance reportedly pledged to cover the losses. However, frozen funds are not the same as recovered funds.

Maybe those reassurances helped calm the market. That’s just my guess — it’s hard to know exactly what was going through investors’ minds.

But crypto prices aren’t really what I want to talk about.

It made me wonder: if a company this big can fall victim to an attack, how safe should an ordinary person feel?

Major exchanges, banks, and government institutions have money for security, specialists, and monitoring. And even then, nobody can guarantee that a breach will never happen.

Most of us just have a phone, a computer, and the hope that everything is properly protected.

Then there’s the rapid development of artificial intelligence. I don’t want to exaggerate and claim that AI can find every vulnerability in a second. It can’t. But it can help find flaws, automate parts of an attack, and create increasingly convincing scams. At the same time, it also helps the people defending us.

To be clear, I’m not suggesting that AI was responsible for this reported attack. That’s a separate issue it got me thinking about.

How is someone with no knowledge of programming or cybersecurity supposed to navigate all this? How do you protect your savings when even the biggest companies aren’t immune to every possible mistake?

Of course, we’re not helpless. Unique passwords, extra login protection, updates, and caution all matter. But part of our security still depends on the companies we trust with our money and data.

Honestly? It led me to imagine a pretty dark future.

Imagine major cyberattacks disrupting several banks, exchanges, and essential public services at the same time. You can’t pay by card, make a transfer, or access your own money. Then communication problems and supply disruptions start piling up.

How long would people stay calm?

In my head, that scenario quickly went further: panic, people buying up food and water, conflicts. Sounds like a movie, I know. This is a fear of mine, not a prediction of what will happen. An attack on one company doesn’t mean the entire infrastructure is about to collapse.

Still, it’s hard not to think about how used we’ve become to everything simply working. Our money is available through an app, we pay with our phones, and we can reach other people with a few taps.

It often takes an outage to show us just how dependent we are on all of it.

Interesting times are ahead. I just hope that, in the race to build increasingly powerful technology, security gets just as much attention.

What do you think? Do you feel your money is safe in the digital world? Does the development of AI make you feel more reassured or more concerned?

This is certainly a huge shock to the digital world. The fact that even Binance could face a hacking incident and people could suffer huge losses is very worrying. I sincerely hope that those who have lost their funds will be able to recover them.

The recent AI era has made me quite concerned because most of my work is done online. I have funds on Binance, as well as in the Hive ecosystem. Sometimes, I worry about whether these exchanges and platforms are truly safe or if they could turn out to be fraudulent.

Today's incident was certainly alarming and concerning.

Recently, I tried to withdraw my funds from Binance, but the withdrawal was not going through. Binance was showing that withdrawals had been suspended. How long will this suspension last? Will we be able to access and recover our funds again? This is a big question mark.

In your opinion, is Binance a trustworthy exchange? Can we trust them to keep our funds safe and return them to us?

Wow, it's scary. All my savings are in Hive, for my future PC so I can play my favorite games. I feel helpless because Hive has also been attacked. It's worrying; I think there's a major cybersecurity challenge ahead.

Hey friend, I sometimes read news about AI, and it has truly advanced by leaps and bounds. However, there will always be people who use it for malicious purposes—as we’re already seeing today, it’s being used for scams and other harmful activities. Unfortunately, that’s a difficult thing to manage :/ .

On another note, I often hear people say that no exchange is truly secure and that it’s a bad idea to keep your money there, since it doesn’t fully belong to you. They could block your account, or a technical glitch might occur, leaving you unable to access your funds—or, in the worst-case scenario, you could lose your money due to a hack. The common recommendation is to use cold wallets and only use exchanges when you actually need to make a trade.

Cheers, bro!

Interesting thoughts, mate! Our growing dependence on digital systems is concerning, especially with cyberattacks becoming more sophisticated. That's why I believe in diversifying assets, keeping funds on-chain, and keeping control of our crypto keys.

AI is a double-edged sword, as it can both increase cyber threats and improve security. Your scenario may sound like a movie, but it's a good reminder to be prepared for the unexpected.

Hopefully, we never have to experience it!
