Rewarding meaningful comments on Hive

Have you ever spent hours working on a blog post? You carefully choose your photos, think about the words, and try to create something worth sharing. Finally, you publish it and hope people will enjoy reading it.
Then you check back later. Your post has received some upvotes, but there are hardly any comments. Maybe there is just one short reply. Or perhaps nobody has said anything at all.
An upvote is a way to show appreciation, but a meaningful comment can make you feel that someone has taken time to read your blog.

Without interaction, Hive is just a collection of individual posts, not an active community. Comments start conversations, introduce new perspectives, and give people a reason to stay.

That is why meaningful engagement matters. And that is why we believe quality comments deserve more appreciation.

That is why we started @topcomment.

We are a community-powered manual curation project focused on the quality of comments on Hive. Our curators look for replies that show genuine interest, share ideas, offer useful insights, or help start meaningful conversations. We reward these comments with upvotes, giving thoughtful contributions some extra recognition.

We cannot reward every good comment, but we want to help make meaningful engagement more visible and encourage people to take part in conversations.

How does Topcomment work?

First, it is important to understand that @topcomment is a manual curation service. We do not automatically upvote any comments. Our team reviews comments and decides which ones deserve an upvote and which ones don't.

There are two ways we discover quality comments.

1: Scanning for comments

We use a script that collects comments meeting a minimum length requirement. These comments are shared in a channel in the Topcomment Discord Server, where our curators review them manually.

The length requirement helps us find comments that may show more effort, but it is only a starting point. A long comment is not necessarily a good one, and a short comment can still be valuable. Our curators always judge the actual content against our guidelines.

2: Nominations

We receive more quality comments than we can reward with our available voting power. This means some comments unfortunately will be missed by our manual curation process.

But you can help us discover them!

Found a comment that deserves recognition? Reply to that comment and mention @topcomment. We will review it manually. You don't need to be the author of the original post.

When you find a comment that you think deserves recognition, simply reply to it and mention @topcomment.

Like all comments, we also review nominations manually. A nomination does not guarantee an upvote, but it helps bring good comments to our attention.
We encourage you to nominate quality comments from a variety of authors.

What kind of comments get rewarded?

There is no fixed formula for a great comment. We look at the content rather than simply counting words.

In general, we look for comments that:

  • Show that the commenter has read and understood the post.
  • Respond to the actual content instead of giving a generic reaction.
  • Share personal thoughts, experiences, or useful information.
  • Add a different perspective or raise an interesting question.
  • Show genuine effort and contribute to the discussion.

You do not have to agree with the author. Respectful disagreement can lead to some of the best discussions on Hive.

We also do not expect every comment to be a small essay. A concise comment can be excellent if it shows genuine interest and adds something meaningful.

The most important thing is that your comment contributes to the conversation.

What doesn't get rewarded?

To keep our curation fair and focused on meaningful engagement, we follow a number of guidelines.

We do not upvote:

  • Short or generic replies such as "Great blog!" that do not add anything to the discussion.
  • Comments about controversial or sensitive topics such as politics, religion, or war. We want to avoid taking sides in these discussions.
  • AI-generated comments. We expect comments to reflect the person's own thoughts and effort. Accounts posting AI-generated comments may be muted by our curation service.
  • Comments that have already received substantial rewards.
  • Contest entries and giveaway replies.
  • Comments from accounts with a reputation of 25 or lower.

These guidelines help us focus our limited voting power on comments that deserve additional recognition.

AI-assisted translations

We welcome comments in every language. You do not need to write in English to take part in meaningful discussions on Hive.

However, we cannot reliably distinguish between comments that have only been translated with AI and comments that have been generated by AI. For this reason, our no-AI rule also applies to AI-assisted translations.

We would rather read your own thoughts in your native language than a polished comment that does not reflect your own words. Many Hive front-ends offer translation tools that can help other readers understand your comment.

Supporting @topcomment

Our curation service relies on community support. The more resources we have, the more comments we can reward and the higher our upvotes can be.

There are a few ways to support the project.

Delegating Hive Power

Our curation service runs on delegated Hive Power (HP). The amount of HP available to us directly affects the size of the upvotes we can give.
By delegating HP to @topcomment, you help us reward more quality comments and support meaningful engagement across Hive.

Delegators also receive a share of the curation rewards. We return 80% of these rewards to our delegators in liquid HIVE. 10% is used to grow the @topcomment account and strengthen the project for the future and the last 10% is the reward for our curators.

You can delegate via your own front-end, but also using Hive Keychain through this tool:

šŸ‘‰ https://tools.crypto-dreamr.com/delegate

To make it easier we have already created some default links for delegations:
50HP - 100HP - 250HP - 500HP - 750HP - 1000HP - 1500HP

Upvoting and reblogging our posts!

There are still some people that haven't heard about our @topcomment project, so reblogging our posts does help to spread the word.

You can also add @topcomment to your AutoVote list in PeakD. We usually create one weekly report on Fridays, so the impact on your voting power is low. You can do this by opening our @topcomment profile in PeakD and select "Add to AutoVote" under "Interactions".

Follow the @topcomment voting trail

You can also support our curation by following the @topcomment voting trail.

You can follow the @topcomment trail by using auto-votes in PeakD:
https://peakd.com/me/autovote

Or you could use Hive.Vote:
šŸ‘‰ https://hive.vote/dash.php?trail=topcomment&i=1

By following the trail, you can support the comments we reward while receiving curation rewards yourself, subject to the usual voting conditions.

Transparency and reports

We want our community to see which comments receive our support.

That is why we publish weekly curation reports listing the comments we have upvoted. These reports allow you to discover the comments we have rewarded, see what our curators value, and follow the work of our team.

You can find all our reports here:

šŸ‘‰ https://peakd.com/created/topcommentreport

Follow the @topcomment account if you want to stay up-to-date.

Let's make Hive even more engaging!

Want to help? Let's make Hive a more engaging place by recognizing meaningful comments! When you come across a comment that deserves recognition, simply reply to it and mention @topcomment.

Together, we can give quality comments more visibility and encourage more meaningful conversations on Hive.

Do you have any questions, suggestions, or feedback? Feel free to leave a comment on this post or join us in the Topcomment Discord Server. We'd love to hear from you!

Kind regards,
The Topcomment Curation Team
