I have passed by Guildford cathedral many times recently, each time saying to myself and my wife, we must visit this magnificent building sometime.

Well today was an opportunity to do that but we only had time to walk around the outside.

This very large building was started in 1936 by Sir Edward Maufe. Unfortunately, the start of the second world war stopped all building work and it was not re-started until 1954.

Building was slow due to lack of funds, so a scheme called 'buy a brick' was introduced to get ordinary people involved to provid funds. Finally, the cathedral was consecrated on 17th May 1961 by Bishop George Reindorp.
