Nowadays, to afford hospital bills, one must either be very wealthy or have insurance coverage. Even then, there is no guarantee of survival; doctors can only postpone death for a while, not prevent it.
Hospital charges vary significantly; while one hospital might charge ten thousand rupees a day for the ICU, another might charge twenty thousand. I believe the difference lies not in the medical treatment itself, but in the level of care and attention provided.
They assign one or two nurses to an ICU and charge fees for "night nurses" for every patient; it is hard to justify how fair this practice is. A relative of mine was admitted to the hospital today due to breathlessness; they had undergone surgery for kidney stones just two days prior.
Their condition was alarming at the time of admission, and it remains critical now. Yet, the expenses incurred have been massive. Fortunately, they are well-off, so they could manage it; the situation for those without means would be truly dire.
If this is the plight of the wealthy, one can only imagine the rest. Hospitals are springing up on every street, yet there is a lack of qualified doctors. When we took my mother to a hospital in Hyderabad for a heart-related issue, we were told that a drop in blood levels could trigger a stroke and that cancer was the underlying cause of the blood loss.
They recommended three tests to confirm this. The first test was conducted, but the results were inconclusive, so they asked us to return for another test. We agreed and went back. After the test results came back, the doctors said the situation wasn't entirely clear and asked us to return for a third test.
Instead of going back, we learned about a cancer care center in Tirupati that offers free consultations, so we went there. Upon reviewing the initial test results, they clearly stated that my mother did not have cancer, explaining that the specific findings in the report ruled it out.
The doctors in Hyderabad couldn't even figure that out; they seem intent only on extracting money from patients. The quality of medical treatment provided by doctors is steadily declining.
As for today, I went for a morning walk, visited the patient at the hospital, and then returned home, had dinner, and went to sleep.
