Every year, we celebrate Independence Day, honor those responsible for it, and draw inspiration from their sacrifices and struggles. Yet, the very next day, everything returns to business as usual for everyone.
I am bringing this up today because, on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, we held a meeting at my office where everyone spoke eloquently about Gandhi and other freedom fighters—highlighting their struggles and sacrifices.
However, as soon as the meeting ended, everyone simply went back to their respective tasks. Everyone speaks as if we have truly attained independence, but I do not feel that way. If I voice this opinion, some people laugh it off, while others get angry and tell me not to say such things.
The reason I say this is that while the British once ruled over us, today it is politicians who do so. Our administrative system is structured in a hierarchy where one level of authority governs the next. In offices, some superiors behave as if they are kings and their subordinates are mere slaves; they use sweet words to get the job done when they need us, but once their purpose is served, they cast us aside as if we are useless.
This seems particularly prevalent in government offices. Yet, outwardly, they claim we are all one big family—a situation that leaves me unsure whether to laugh or cry. There is no shortage of people preaching morals, but a scarcity of those who actually practice them.
Turning to the topic of our independence: here, the word of the wealthy carries weight, and there are plenty of people ready to engage in corruption if money changes hands. We are taxed on everything—spending the little money we have, earning it, saving it, inheriting ancestral property, and even on investments.
Life has become so complex with these levies that an ordinary person struggles to figure out how to survive in this society. There is no proper oversight to ensure that government-allocated schemes actually reach the intended beneficiaries; in my opinion, half of the people entitled to these schemes never receive them.
Once, while out for a snack, the vendor lamented that he had spent two days trying to secure an old-age pension for his parents without success. Despite submitting all the required documents, officials would constantly find some pretext to reject the application or send it back—it was the same frustrating routine.
He had pooled all his resources to start the business, hoping to provide some support for his parents, yet the pension remained unapproved. Meanwhile, while the public has access to unlimited monthly plans, high-ranking officials enjoy the privilege of claiming phone bills running into thousands.
People pay taxes with the hope of making life comfortable for the common man and ensuring the well-being of the entire nation; however, seeing schemes diverted to the undeserving and politicians enjoying every luxury—in my view, this is not what independence is meant to be.
True independence means a balanced combination of equality, economic freedom, freedom of expression, mental peace, and personal liberty.
As for today, work kept me at the office until quite late; I started the day with a walk at home, had my meals, and have now wrapped things up by heading to bed.
