           Let's Talk About Alcohol & Your Health

It's festive period and an excuse for many to take alcohol, even those who have abstained all year long.
Alcohol is one of the most commonly consumed substances in the world but its effects on the body are often ignored or belittled.

We will divide the effects of alcohol into short term and long term.

Short-Term Effects;

You may experience immediately after drinking or even while still drinking.

1. Dizziness and poor coordination

1. Slurred speech

1. Reduced judgment and risky behaviour

1. Nausea and vomiting

1. Headache/hangover

1. Blackouts or memory loss

2. Excessive Urination

Long-Term Effects of Alcohol
This is the major reason why one should be careful of alcohol and excessive consumption because at the time these effects are setting in, very little can be done.

1. Liver diseases; the liver is overworked by frequent and large volumes of alcohol. Overtime, various liver problems manifest such as; fatty liver disease and the dreaded hepatitis, including liver cancer

2. Heart problems; long term consumption can weaken the heart muscle, leading to conditions like arrhythmia and high blood pressure which increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

3. Ulcers & Gastritis: alcohol may cause damage to the lining of digestive tract leading to ulcers in the stomach and esophagus.

4. Alcohol Dependence; with time the individual becomes unable to stop or control alcohol use despite these negative effects

5. Road traffic accidents; from drunk drivers or even pedestrians.

6. Domestic violence Towards loved ones; alcohol can lead to aggression and violent behaviour, even loved ones are not spared when alcohol impairs judgement.

Prevention / Responsible Use

• Never drink and drive

• Eat before drinking

• Avoid binge drinking

• Find better stress-relief methods (exercise, hobbies, music)

Remember: The earlier you intervene, the easier recovery becomes. Take control of your life, don't let alcohol do it for you.
