An Offer Too Good To Be True

1000534321.jpg

It was just a few months after celebrating the new year, 2017, and after that, everyone went about their lives with the hope that things would work smoothly. I’d already gotten employed at a private teaching school close to home. It was just the kind of work I didn’t need to run down the bus stop waiting for the bus and wasting my money on transport daily, especially with the low amount of money we were being paid.

Thankfully, I didn’t go through so much stress finding a job with my Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE), hence the low payment. I still accepted the salary thinking I would survive with my Dad. My plan was to support him by feeding my siblings and me, but deep within me, I knew the salary wouldn’t be enough. But I overlooked that because I needed a job plus, my boss promised to increase our salaries every year just to appreciate us.

I have only worked for a year already when I got an offer. It was very early in the morning, and on my way to the school, a man signalled while walking up to me.

“Hello dear. How are you?”

“Good morning, sir. I’m fine.

You are going to work, aren't you? I would like to see you when you return back.

"Alright, sir. I will come to your house after the close of work."

I was sceptical about meeting him at first because I was afraid and thought he wanted to say something about my dad’s behaviour. I have noticed he was always around him, and most times, he would want to know some things about my dad, and I mostly try to conceal some information from him. He was too close to us, but I didn't give in to such familiarity.

As I walked slowly towards my friend's house to call her, I was thinking about what could make him want to see me but I was lost in thought that I'd gone past her house. I jolted back to reality when a young boy tapped my back to greet me.

I turned back and went to call her after checking the time on my wrist and knowing we still had some time as we were careful not to be late. For the first few hours before the break time, I couldn’t concentrate on my work. Peace noticed my frowned mood and asked what the matter was.

"I don’t know. My mind is just racing like I'm scared of something I can't truly identify."

1000534331.jpg

"What is it?" She asked.

"Okay. So, on my way this morning before coming to your place, Mr John (for the sake of this post, I would call him that) asked to see me later today. I don’t know for what reasons he would want to see me. I just hope it’s not about my dad." I said uninterestingly.

“Wait, Mr John wants to see you?” She enquired again inquisitively with a surprised look on her face, followed by a smile that looked like she knew something.

"Why are you smiling, Miss Peace?"

"No," she said as she sighed silently, took a pause, then continued, "It’s just that I might know why he wanted to see you because he already met me some days ago."

"Oh really! What’s that?" I asked inquisitively, raising my eyebrow, and moving my chair closer to her so other people wouldn't listen to us.

"Yes, he asked me to come work for him at his new school and he’s willing to pay me higher than what I’m getting here."

"Hmm. If that’s what he wants to see me for, I won’t accept." I bluntly replied

"But wait," I jumped in before she could say something

“Why would he be willing to pay higher? I mean is he that desperate for new staff? How about his teachers that are there already?" I became more interested.

"Well, I am not taking that offer because I heard something about him, too. Some said he owes teachers salary a lot and besides, his school is still new and you will definitely work more than what you are paid for. He only wants to use that offer to entice and lure us."

I was just smiling all along because I knew deep down in me that I wouldn't be tempted by such an offer. But I still wanted to go to hear his own side of whatever he wanted to say.

Later in the evening, I got back home. I quickly prepared something to eat before going to meet Mr John. But when I got to his place, he wasn't around, but I was told he would be back soon.

"I will come back then," I told one of the occupants in the compound.

A few minutes later, I saw Mr John walk towards our landlord's shop, which was facing our building, which he rented out and which we were one of the tenants while he and his family built their own home next to the shop.

"Good evening sir, I already came by your house earlier but was told you weren't around," I said with a smile on my face.

"Yes, I quickly went to get something."

After the little greeting and talk between him and our landlord, he faced me while signalling we sat somewhere in a corner but still an open place, which was a relief to me.

I was still wondering what could he possibly say but I just wanted to hear him talk.

As we sat down, he started by asking about my day and work. I could smell a rat as he started asking about my boss and how she was treating me; he asked about my salary, to which I replied positively and told him the amount I was collecting.

"Come and work for me. I will pay you double what she's paying you," he said.

All the while, I was just smiling and couldn't believe such was happening to me. But he continued, thinking his sweet mouth and offer that looked too good to be true would actually make me reconsider.

"I'm sorry, sir. I am enjoying my present workplace and my boss is a nice person. I can't just resign without a good reason. I'm very sorry," I said while making sure my words weren't hurting.

"Alright, no problem." He said when he saw he couldn't change my mind with that speech he kept bringing up.

It was after some days I got to know from another friend of mine that all he said was lies as I wouldn't enjoy the place as he told me. Besides, his school is far from home which I would be spending on transport daily.

I am well aware of such a situation, as I also faced a similar situation while I was on vacation in my village. Such offers are tempting, but they are bait, and we should handle such an affair carefully without being trapped.

Yea, thanks.

This is common in many countries: employers are looking for young staff to pay less. Recent graduates or inexperienced people can be cheap labor. And as they know the need that some people live or the desire we have to make our resume, some bosses take advantage of that to do what you narrate or worse. Thanks for sharing your story with us. Regards

Yea, this happens everywhere. Employers coming up with different but false promises to employees but reality then dawns on them for being tricked and taken advantage of. So disheartening.

0.00000000 BEE

This kind of thing happens a lot with teachers, so I'm not surprised. It is greedy folks that would jump at such an offer without considering the facts like you did.

0.00000000 BEE

Exactly. At the hearing of 'double,' they grab it only to find out later it was all deceit.

Reading this, I'm made to flash back to a time when I was teaching and another school was consistently trying to get me to work with them. A similar experience with yours too. But I think one just needs to learn to make choices.

0.00000000 BEE

Exactly. You have to learn to make choices and also think carefully so as not to eventually lose on both sides.

0.00000000 BEE

Some people are just so funny, how he was talking down on the principal of the school you are working in while he is the main rat in the game.

I'm glad you already developed the instinct before going there and you didn't give in to all he was saying.

0.00000000 BEE

Thank God I wasn't that greedy, too because at the hearing of double salary, one would be tempted to jump at it.

0.00000000 BEE

It's always good to follow our intuition and discuss with trusted people when in doubt.

0.00000000 BEE

Absolutely right. That's the best in such a situation.

Most people will say what they will not be able to do. They will lure you with sweet mouth and if you eventually go, you will be suffering.

0.00000000 BEE

Exactly. I wouldn't even like myself if I ended up going for such an offer.

0.00000000 BEE

And thanks to you for being loyal to your boss!

0.00000000 BEE

Yea, thank you, ma'am.

0.00000000 BEE

That was wrong of Mr. John, and judging from his character, you wouldn't have enjoyed his school cause he seems to be full of deceit.
Thank God your fellow teacher Miss Peace already told you beforehand what he was up to before you even went to meet up with him.

Going behind the back, trying to lure and steal other people's staff with deceitful offer is very wrong of him as a school manager still trying to develop his own school. Staff should be the one going to him to seek employment and not the other way round.
That alone tells a lot about him as a person and his school
Good thing you smelled that rat and rejected that offer
Have a beautiful day Princess!

0.00000000 BEE

Yes, you are very right. Staff should be the one going to get employed than for him to start cutting corners deceitfully to steal them from their works. I bet he was just desperate to have more staff and for someone who is greedy might eventually jump at it and would regret it. Thank you so much for your warm comment.

0.00000000 BEE

That's how it should be.
You are welcome

Thank God your friend told you about Mr John ohh. That’s how you would have worked with him for months and he won’t pay you

Just imagine such moment. It'd be one I would have regretted. Besides, I already knew it was all lies.

0.00000000 BEE

The offer was indeed too good to be true, I can tell from the way he was persisting

0.00000000 BEE

Yea, right. It was

0.00000000 BEE

A friend of mine had almost the exact same experience and what was more shocking was that her own mr. john, was a family friend. We just couldn't believe he was willing to do that to someone he was close to.

0.00000000 BEE

Wow, just imagine that! Doing that to your relative? That's so bad.

0.00000000 BEE

Asin eh 🤧 people can be very wicked and heartless

0.00000000 BEE

You are right; do not forget that your employer will only enrich his or her pocket but not make you rich.

Good, you got the info before the real info.

I support @princessbusayo on this one.

Very few people would be in your shoes and not fall for the offer of a juicy pay. They would not even want to listen to any other person as they might feel Whatever they are being told against the offer was mere jealousy. Good thing you opened up and got honest opinions from well meaning people. God saved you if not you would have been working for transporters lol.

0.00000000 BEE

🤣🤣🤣 I would have lose on both sides but thank God I didn't even give in.

0.00000000 BEE

Who knows how it could've turned out for you if you had given up on your job for a mere sweet talk of a person. That's how they behave; they'll sweet talk you to leave a well paying job and come to them, and when you finally do that, you'll wish you never left your old job.

0.00000000 BEE

You are absolutely right. They have sweet ways to cajole someone and if you aren't careful, you might regret your actions. Thank you.

0.00000000 BEE

Those kind of men can be very dubious, Thank God you aren't money driven

0.00000000 BEE

Exactly. I am not money driven, else, it could have been another thing.

0.00000000 BEE

Honestly it's always good to keep a simple eye. Good thing you decided to seek elderly advice and eventually saved your head. Beautiful read. Well done

We have so many of these kinds of men around us these days. They have different ways of cajoling you by luring you to their establishment after which the result would be hardship.
You made a wise decision.

0.00000000 BEE

You are right. I’m glad you understand how this works. Thank you for reading.

Double the salary, sweet offer and Mr John seems like a nice man o😆😆😆

I don’t know if I would have said no, but working environment matters a lot

0.00000000 BEE

Haha 😆 that’s why we are different.
Yes, working environment matters but that wouldn’t make me leave a place I was enjoying all because of double salary. What’s the possibility I would last longer there? Hehehe 😂

0.00000000 BEE

True sha
A friend got an offer
150k and she was earning 50k before
Good right but after one month they let her go
I feel so bad for her
But the thing is
Everyone wants a better life

0.00000000 BEE

Greedy people would have seen it as an opportunity and jumped on it only for things to go sideways and they blame village people.

0.00000000 BEE

A big opportunity they would say, not knowing they are only being tricked and would regret later.
