Silver Gold Stackers Engagement Initiative #9 - 5 HSBI For Grabs

Silver gold stackers engagement initiative #9.png

Week 9!

I'm back with another question for the silver and gold stackers in the community to see if we can dig up some nice stories or memories and get the conversation going about the topic we all love: precious metals!

As I mentioned before, I like to mix things up a bit here and there and therefore you will most-likely find some totally different questions about your way of collecting or what you prefer if you have to pick one over the other. But I also think it's nice to look further than just the precious metal bars and coins and that's where I'm heading for with this week's question.

There is no right or wrong, everyone who has an opinion about this can join, I also invite the newbie collectors and those that are interested in starting to do so because who knows, we might just connect with some new people because of you joining!

The silver gold stackers community is a friendly bunch and you shouldn't be shy to enter the conversation. I remember that I sometimes felt a bit dumb being such a newbie but I quickly learned that everyone has to start somewhere and honestly all these people have inspired me in one way or the other, so don't be shy!

This week's question

Week 9 Silver gold stackers engagement initiative question week 6.png

My own answer

Now you probably see where this question is coming from if you have read my content about the silver cufflinks in the past weeks. I know these are not as pure in silver as the silver rounds and bars most collect but I personally think (especially if there are gemstones involved) that they can be worth collection when finding a good deal.

Even more so when it's an items you can wear yourself or at least can admire such as we admire our own pretty coins collected over the years. I remember that I was going through my grandmother and mother's jewellery boxes when I was a child and loved all the fancy big stones they had, they told me they were very valuable but at the time I had no clue about that, I just liked to put them on for fun to play.

I personally haven't collected any silver or gold jewellery over the years, with one exception and that was when my grandmother died, my grandfather wanted to give me something to hold on to. He wanted to buy me a necklace with a hanger that had a bit of ashes in there, my grandmother was very dear to me and I remember it was an expensive necklace and hanger. My grandfather was certain, it had to be gold because gold holds it's value dear. I was 16 at the time.

Now I have to say that sadly I don't have that hanger nor necklace anymore because when I got into financial trouble, I sold the necklace, but kept the hanger (for obvious reasons). When I had to flee to a women's shelter with my two children for their violent father, I was in such panic mode that I forgot all sorts of valuable things, the hanger included.

After I had a place to stay and came to pick up some of my stuff at the old home, he told me in my face he sold it as he had to eat, didn't he? Trust me when I say he didn't need the money and he only did it to hurt me. Of all the things he did to me, this was one that hurt a lot because it can't be replaced and he purely did it knowing he'd hit me where it hurt most.

This was the only really valuable item I had from my younger years and after that, I never bought anything gold or silver in terms of jewellery but I want to pick that up a bit now to add some other aspect of valuable items to collect for my kids later besides the coins.

5 HSBI for grabs

If you want to share your answer in a comment or your own post, you have a chance that I pick your answer for a HSBI share. Sometimes I hand out a few more, but at least 5 are guaranteed each week. I appreciate everyone taking the time to engage, and again, don't be shy, come say hi!

I'm looking forward reading your answers, if you have pictures, you're welcome to share these too, but of course that's not mandatory!

Have a nice day everyone :)

Aside from coins, I also collect stirling silver charms from every place I travel. 😍

Oh that is SO cool! That reminds me of my father, my mother and him broke up when I was a baby but he used to bring a typical collectors doll from each country that he visited for me. We had a display cabinet filled with them, at some point I started to paint them (oops) I had no clue some were worth money :) I don't know how you call them in English but they were always boxed and with the typical clothing from that country.

This is actually a nice reminder that whenever you visit a new country, you can collect something from there and end up with such a collection as you have there. Really cool idea!

I keep an eye out for jewelry but don't usually find anything unless I'm buying random lots of broken jewelry online.

Right now, I just have my wedding ring on a Sterling Italian rope chain, and a Sterling locket that has 5x 1/10oz American Gold Eagles as backup emergency funds.

I think it's nice to have a bit of a separate stash considered emergency fund. Right now I just have what I Have and I honestly don't want to part with any haha.

Thanks for sharing! Let's hope you never need those emergency funds and they will only rise in value :)

As a matter of fact, YES! I buy Mene 24K Gold and Platinum jewelry in addition to gold and silver coins, bars, and rounds.

Since I learned and understood the meaning of "karats", I have limit myself to 24K jewelry. BTW, I have other gold jewelry, mostly with diamonds. The majority of it is from my mother. But I do not intend to add to it. If I were to buy jewelry, I'd buy only pure 24karat gold.
Take a look at this! This was taken from the Mene website.

There is a myth that jewelry cannot be crafted from pure 24 karat gold due to its softness. While it is true that pure gold is more malleable than other metals and may contour to your body, gold is indestructible. This special quality can only be understood when experienced physically, leading to an appreciation of this authentic purity as superior to any element in nature.

I would like to mention that I bought this jewelry one piece at a time. And I am most amazed at how one piece of 24k gold or platinum jewelry adds up over time. If you decide on jewelry, remember that... 24karat Gold is PURE GOLD. Oh, and if you are inclined to buy jewelry from Mene, use my referral code. You and I will get credits: https://mene.com/invite/cK5BKh

Hey! I remember reading about Mene in the steem days.. But as silver was not within budget, gold surely wasn't either.. I will bookmark it to check that out later. I don't have funds for it now though, but maybe in the future .. I appreciate sharing the explanation and I made sure that I can find it back later. If I were to buy, I will of course use the ref ;)

I generally don't, mostly because I don't like wearing jewelry. It always seems to get in the way. But if I find something really nice and it's basically at spot I might consider it but would prefer a bar or coin!

I get that, besides that one necklace, I've never really been into wearing much jewellery, only earrings but these weren't really valuable lol. But I'm starting to see where the appreciation came from when my mother and grandmother had these (now) antique rings with gemstones.. So I can see myself picking up more deals when I find them. But only if I would ware it myself, or my boyfriend or kid would (in the future). This way it can never really be a stupid purchase lol.

When it comes to adding to my precious metals collection, I limit myself to coins, rounds and bars. That said, when I shop for my wife (Valentine's Day, Anniversary, Birthday, Christmas), I DO lean towards gold or silver jewelry precisely for the precious metals content, rather than clothing, etc.

0.00491830 BEE

Hey there, nice to see you again! I appreciate your support :)

I think that's a nice approach as it's a lasting gift, especially with the bad quality overall on many products being offered nowadays.

It's been a big annoyance of me personally that in the past decade I've seen quality decline for about everything and even worse, the more expensive versions of items being just as unreliable in many cases. I think realizing this more and more is also one of the reasons I lean towards finding antiques that are still of high quality as they are made in a different era.

Thanks for your answer!

I typically buy (bought) from Tiffanys, but nowadays it's James Avery, a Texas jewelry chain. Unfortunately, my wife has a tendency to lose jewelry. She lost a large 14K Tiffanys floating heart pendant. She also lost a Tiffanys ring that she bought herself with winnings at a casino in Uruguay. Her excuse was that she lost weight anf the ring slipped off her finger. She has a habit of taking off her jewelry while sitting on the couch at night, and the heart pendant may have gone into the trash wrapped in a tissue :(

0.00496152 BEE

Do you look out for silver or gold jewellery besides coins and bars to add to your precious metals collection?

I like MENE jewelry. I learned about MENE from @goldmatters and for a time I was picking up small 24K gold pieces that can be worn as a bracelet. It was a fun way to stack gold.

If so, do you limit yourself to certain items and which are they?

I don't do rings, but I did purchase a platinum necklace once. BTW platinum has been doing pretty good these past 30 days.

0.00484324 BEE

Yeah I forgot about MENE myself, I remember learning about it on Steemit at the time but it was definitely within budget at the time, as silver wasn't either :)

Thanks for the tip about platinum, I've seen some bars being offered but haven't even checked if that was a good thing to consider buying. Will look into that, thank you!

In my line of work which is construction. You really can’t wear any jewelry aside from a neck chain. Which I do have and has been in my neck every day since I was 13. It’s been off twice for MRI’s but that’s it. The neck chain and the cross on it were a birthday gift from my parents. I have other jewelry but it was my dad’s rings. I sold my wedding ring during my divorce!

0.00484658 BEE

I understand, then it's a no go for safety reasons. That's pretty amazing that you've been wearing it this long and only took it of for the MRI's. But it seems the necklace is very precious to you and a good reason to hold on to it!

Sucks to read you sold it during the divorce. I don't know if you were really fond of it but I can still remember how I felt the moment my ex told me he brought my hanger with ashes to the pawn shop for pennies..

Thanks again for sharing your story!

For me I am not a fan of jewellery.
I like to look at it but absolutely hate wearing it.
I always manage to catch it and damage it so I steer clear of it.

I am considering collecting jewellery as a way to join the stackers ranks and maybe one day have enough to make something cool with it

0.00484477 BEE

Thank you for sharing that. I can agree partially because I haven't worn any necklaces, ear rings or rings for years straight because I always have allergic reactions to the cheap jewellery and I don't want to spend much money on something I will wear very rarely.. But it seems lately I've bumped into a few nice options so I'm wearing it more often, buying silver jewellery will make more sense now for me :)

I think with jewellery it's more than about the silver weight thought, I look at antique or gemstones mostly for example. Or certain brands..

Good luck if you start stacking!

0E-8 BEE

I do but only a few bits here and there it's usually not smart stacking!BBH

0.00476355 BEE

@thisismylife! Your Content Is Awesome so I just sent 1 $BBH (Bitcoin Backed Hive) to your account on behalf of @bitcoinman. (25/50)

0E-8 BEE

I understand that, to me it's definitely more about the value of the item as a whole for example, a gemstone included or antique making it more valuable.. or certain brands that will always be expensive, even second or third handed..

Thanks for sharing your opinion :)

0E-8 BEE

Depends.
I do have a few Silver jewelry pieces I have come across. Like these awesome sterling silver ship brooches that make great map place markers too. Sterling Bat Pendant as I got these and other as gifts from a dear friend in New York state, a sweet fellow Stacker and collector in his own right.
There is a delightful Filigree bracelet from @monsterjamgold in a trade for Hive tokens, so I spent some Hive tokens.
I've been successful before finding sterling silver jewelry at Thrift shops selling for far below spot price like this Mexican bracelet on the top picture of this post. One of two silver cuff bracelets. It's been a while since I score a great deal but it has been tough the last three years. I won't go out of the way. But at about half of spot price they are Targets of opportunity.
And I can't forget Silversaver888 gifting me an 18" string of black pearls.

What's a Treasure chest without a few pieces of jewelry?

Oh my gosh, that filigree bracelet from Turkey is SO gorgeous!
I remember in my 11 times! on holiday in Turkey, I was always in awe with the beautiful jewellery there.. With our last time finding one shop where there was silver jewellery that often was either art and or antique which is a place very high on my wish list to visit again but then with the funds to buy something.

The Mexican bracelet link goes to the same post btw, not sure if that was intended?

Thank you for sharing some more treasures of yours, it's always a pleasure!

Me too, that was a shit move of him, but done on purpose. This is who he is and I really couldn't have seen this coming because I surely wasn't "awake" yet at the time of leaving.. Thankfully, the memories remain, even without the hanger..
