Kpong Fishing Harbour| Lower Volta River, Ghana

Ever visited a place that smells like absolute peace? Somedays ago, I shared all about the Adomi bridge and the Volta River. I’ve been wanting to come into contact with the river for a while now and I had the chance to do that today. I’ve been seeing the water body from being on top of the bridge and as someone who loves ocean and all that has to do with water, I get overly excited anytime I’m on the bridge.

I had a really busy schedule today but before I even started what I had to do for the day, my sister drove us to the Kpong Fishing Harbour. Kpong is a town in the Eastern Region of Ghana which is popularly known because of the Kpong dam. Kpong dam is one of the hydroelectric dams in Ghana that provides the country with electricity. Tracing the location of the bridge, it was so obvious that was definitely one of the banks of Volta River.

There were a number of canoes going around and others parked as well. The fishermen were really friendly. When they saw me taking pictures, they even offered to take me on a ride. I was excited in the beginning but after looking around and realizing there was no life jackets, I politely declined.

I watched the fisherman as they mended their nets and engaged in all types of fun conversations. Even though the place is not far from town, it wasn’t crowded when we arrived and it looked like that’s actually the natural ambience of the place. Honestly, I got lost a lot of times just staring at the water. It was just so calming.

The view was so beautiful. Just the sight changed my mood from 1 to 10. The water was so clean and clear just like how it’s seen from the bridge. The movement was also so calm and peaceful. That part of the river is the lower Volta river.

There is a whole fish harvesting office around, I mean of course, it’s a fishing harbour. Honestly, when I was told it was a fishing harbour, I laughed because it didn’t look as “fancy” as I expected a harbour to be.

From what I saw, it looked like the the fish harvesting office wasn’t running as it should but the locals are still there keeping their fish businesses running because man must eat. I also heard it’s one of the places in Eastern Region where you can get fresh and cheap fish. So people travel miles just to come get fish from there.

If you ever find yourself in Ghana, do well to visit the lower Volta River at Kpong or better still the Kpong fishing harbour.

It seems like it would be really fun to fish in a wide river.
