Diversity: The Spice of Life

It is the beginning of a brand new week, another opportunity to set out and work toward the future you want for yourself and generations unborn. The previous weeks may not have been as you have been expected but this is another brand new week to make the best out of your self and create a better future for you.

But that is not the topic for today, today we shall be talking about diversity. Have you wondered how a teacher will give students a task to write on a particular topic but they will all write it in their own way and arrive at the same or similar conclusions. This is the power of diversity - diversity in writing. This more the reason it is easy to spot the set of students that copy themselves.

Life is full of diversities from the different types of plants in our farms, flowers in our homes, the music, the food, the clothes, the shoes etc. Even among we humans, there are different races, tribes, colors and cultures. Diversity is embedded in every area of our life.

One beautiful thing about diversity in our world is that it add spice to it. Imagine a world where we are all stuck to one genre of music, dance, hairstyle, food etc. It will be very boring for us humans. Notwithstanding, the diversities that exist among us humans is the cause of some of the issues we deal with in the world today which arises from conflict of interests and beliefs in politics, religion, health and society at large. As humans we are rational beings, hence, we don't always agree or want the same thing.

It is impossible for every human to to have the same preference. There are people who love Afrobeat while others like Hip Hop, some like their food spicy while others don't, some want to drive a Toyoya while some prefer Honda. These disparities in interests can cause controversies and discord between people if a common ground isn't met.

We have different opinions and view about so many things in life and there can be a great disagreement, banter or as serious as crisis if two conflicting views clash. This is the reason you'd see lovers of a football club, political party or music artist argue about who is the best. Sometimes these arguments can be unhealthy.

The purpose of diversity will be lost if we all have to belief in the same school of thought. Let's take for example, there are some women who like wearing trousers and there are some who don't. The one's who like wearing it may choose to do so because of the nature of their jobs (e.g. women in the forces), or they are just comfortable in it. On the other hand, the one's who don't fancy it may be because of their religion, body size, geographical location or culture.

In Nigeria, some cultures does not encourage a younger person to greet a older person with an handshake but in some cultures in Nigeria and even around the world, it is a welcome idea. So, it will be highly unacceptable to impose one's personal belief on others. Each and every person have the right to choose what works for them especially when it is within the legal framework.
