Right now, it's winter here in Brazil (South America). In the region where I live, it rains a lot, and the humidity is high—even more so because we're close to the coast. At this time of year, it's common for furniture to start showing mold in various places, especially those that don't have any kind of protection.

Here at home, there are some leaks that I still need to fix. When it rains, part of the kitchen wall gets soaked, which further aggravates the appearance of mold on the cabinet. On Saturday this weekend, I decided to take the afternoon off — which ended up extending into the evening — to dismantle the entire cabinet, clean the mold, and then apply varnish as a form of protection.

I knew that all furniture can develop mold when exposed to moisture or water for a long time. But what I didn't know was that the wall where the cabinet is attached could get so damp. That's why I had been wanting to do this varnish protection process for a long time.

With my cousin's help, I removed all the cabinet modules and took them to a place where I could paint them without worrying about getting the floor dirty. For this, I used some varnish that was left over from painting the doors. Luckily, there was just enough to paint the entire piece of furniture. Now, I hope this procedure will solve or at least alleviate the problem.

I still need to fix the leak in the wall, for which I plan to use asphalt blanket in the affected areas. I'm just waiting for a sunny day and some free time to do the job.

Neste momento, estamos no período do inverno aqui no Brasil (América do Sul). Na região onde moro, costuma chover bastante, e a umidade do ar é alta — ainda mais por estar próximo ao litoral. Nessa época do ano, é comum que vários móveis comecem a apresentar mofo em diversas partes, principalmente naquelas que não possuem nenhum tipo de proteção.

Aqui em casa, há algumas infiltrações que ainda preciso resolver. Quando chove, parte da parede da cozinha fica encharcada, o que agrava ainda mais o aparecimento de mofo no armário. No sábado deste fim de semana, resolvi tirar a tarde — que acabou se estendendo até a noite — para desmontar todo o armário, fazer a limpeza do mofo e, em seguida, aplicar verniz como forma de proteção.

Eu sabia que todo móvel pode criar mofo quando exposto à umidade ou à água por muito tempo. Mas o que eu não sabia é que a parede onde o armário está fixado poderia ficar tão úmida assim. Por isso, já fazia tempo que eu estava querendo fazer esse processo de proteção com verniz.

Com a ajuda do meu primo, retirei todos os módulos do armário e levei para um local onde eu pudesse fazer a pintura com tranquilidade, sem me preocupar em sujar o chão. Para isso, usei um resto de verniz que tinha sobrado da pintura das portas. Por sorte, a quantidade foi exatamente o suficiente para pintar todo o móvel. Agora, espero que esse procedimento resolva ou pelo menos amenize o problema.

Resta ainda resolver a infiltração na parede, para a qual pretendo utilizar manta asfáltica nas áreas afetadas. Só estou aguardando um dia de sol e também um tempo disponível para executar o serviço.
