I Found a Small Hoard of LEGOs in Goodwill!

Thursday is one day here on Hive that I have absolutely no regular themes. Every now and again I like to share one of my hobbies which is finding old LEGOs in second hand stores and flipping them on eBay. There are some people that manage to make a full time living out of this, but I will never count myself among them. It would just be too hard to find enough old LEGO sets or mini-figures to make it worth my while.

About a week ago I picked up some LEGOs at Goodwill. It tends to really be a hit or miss source though. I usually first look around for any silver items that weren't properly labeled by their employees. Having no luck there I went over to the toys and they had a couple bins full of old LEGO parts and sets partially assembled still. There were some mini-figures and instructions in there too so I picked them both up for $80. Whenever you spend that much it's a serious gamble, but I usually make a decent return. And I saw Star Wars characters in there so it was worth it! It's usually hard to lose with Star Wars unless it's from the last movies, nobody seems to want those.

First thing I always look at are the mini-figures because some can be very valuable. Here are some of the ones I fished out in the last couple of days. The To my surprise it was mostly Star Wars sets along with some Ninjago. I don't know nearly as much about these sets or characters, but I already have made a few nice finds!

This one isn't in the lineup above, I found it near the top of one bin. It's a Ninjago villain called Samukai and is rather uncommon. It sold it about a day for $40. Not too bad! Apparently they are hard to come by!

This is a Hun Warrior, a special edition from series 12 characters. I can probably get at least $12 for him.

Some Star Wars characters now. This is a Genosian Warrior that came out of a set, apparently he was the pilot. It's in great shape, almost like new. It should go for more than $10.

This Luke Skywalker is kind of an odd duck. The yellow skin used to be universal for LEGO figures but for many franchise films like Star Wars they went to flesh tones. This wasn't the really old variety unfortunately. It's was a special edition but not too old. As with many Jedi figures it has an arm crack, I think those may have been from dueling with light sabers. Little boys can be rough one toys!

The cracked arm means I can probably get $6 if I'm lucky.

A Rebel Scout Trooper here, it looks like I can ask around $10 for this one.

This one is an Imperial Navy Trooper with the wrong helmet and very dusty. Hopefully I have a the right helmet somewhere or I may have to buy one which is never fun....

This one is an Imperial Officer from the Empire Strikes Back, but only worth a few dollars... Better than worthless.

And what Star Wars collection is complete without at least one Storm Trooper! This Hoth Variety should bring in more than $8.

And now a couple more Ninjago figures, first a Stone Warrior and below the gold and red ninja. I don't know much about them yet, more research is needed to price them correctly.

So those are a few of the latest ones I've pulled out. It looks like I'm going to do well with the bunch I bought. I already made half back on the one I sold. And I have yet to even take a look at the sets so I'm optimistic. I usually leave the sets for last because they are the most work of figuring out if they are complete, and if not is it worth buying the missing pieces. Most of the time it is, unless it's LEGO City then it's usually not. The real problem isn't the price of the parts, it's the shipping. A $0.15 part often costs five dollars in shipping. Things to keep in mind!

So that is some of the latest haul I'm working on. One interesting thing I ran across when researching a part was a gift the LEGO corporation gave to their employees in Korea in 2021. At first I thought they were real gold and silver, but being a keychain I highly doubt it. I couldn't find much information about them, but they are kind of cool!

catawiki.com

Maybe not as cool as these gifts that were 14 Karat gold given to 20 year employees back in the late seventies and early eighties! They treated their employees well back then!

That will wrap up my post for the day. I hope you enjoyed it! LEGO's can be very profitable, so next time you're in the thrift store don't forget to look at what toys might waiting for you. That is awesome! My kids were little when the Ninjago series started, so I remember buying lots of those. It's likely they are still around as my son (almost 20 years old) still has ALL the LEGOS we got over the years. He separated them into bins by color years ago, and those are in his moms garage at the moment, but they are all there. He's one of those people that could just put the sets back together with ease too xD

He may have a small fortune there, especially if he has the mini-figures and instructions to go with them!

Those are some decent profit, to be very honest, I don't even know that some of these rare LEGO figures can go for as much as 40$

0.00104325 BEE

I sold one for $130 once! Some really are rare and collectors will pay big money for them.

That's from brick ranker, but if you find one of these it's about $10,000. It was a rare on given out at the 2013 Comic-Con in San Diego, California.

0E-8 BEE

Goodness me! 10k?$ so collectors will pay even such for the rarest figures?

0.00102776 BEE

Score! I remember when the space magnet ones first came out. Those were so cool. I think I only ever got one set of them. I think I mentioned this before, but back when I was a kid we only had or four choices. City, Space, Knights, and Pirates.

0.00100787 BEE

It's weird how they have evolved over the years, but they've managed to stay relevant and in business which is remarkable. They even still have their theme park open just north of San Diego! Now their sets for adults are really expensive!

0.00043547 BEE

I can only imagine. I haven't bought a set for myself in years. I know the ones for my nieces and nephews are quite pricey! That's a really good point, they have evolved and stayed relevant.

  1. LEGO are cool just to play with at our age. I still have all of my LEGO from when I was a kiddo and still get them as gifts sometimes.

  2. My brother-in-law is a Huge LEGO flipper. He lives in Australia. So LEGO there generally cost a lot more to acquire than they do here in the US. But he finds them at garage sales, and flea markets then puts the sets together to sell (if they aren’t in their original boxes.) Sometimes he gets us to bring him stuff from the US that isn’t in Australia, and he sells that too!

0.00101634 BEE

That's great! There is a lot of money to be made in LEGOs. I have a few sets I need to finish off with some parts, the trick is to find one seller that has them all so you only pay for one shipping charge. lol

You're collection is probably worth quite a bit of money and it continues to grow!

Nice! I haven't been to Legoland in years now! I used to go once a year when my son was younger and picked up some cool stuff there too. LEGOs are a lot of fun!

As usual, you present us with excellent LEGO collectible figures obviously although all are lovely, I loved the Star Wars ones especially Darth Vader, the Ninjago ones are cute, those adventures make me laugh a lot, the keychains are also great.
