Looking at Dad, it does not feel like he is suffering from Dementia and his brain has stopped thinking mostly. He is still able to move and do his own stuff when absolutely fine, but a little change to his parameters makes him imbalanced. I went to my native to plant some flower pots, so that it gives them smiles in winter, but suddenly we had to rush to hospital as he lost his control over his movements, excretory organs, because of fever. Usually, he barely catch cold and flu, and he was looking quite normal, but the fever was inside and he could not even tell what was going inside him. You ask him anything, his one answer for all question : nothing is happening.
For the first time we had to take him to the hospital without a formal dress, as it was quite difficult to convince him to wear dress. It even took more than half an hour just to make him sit in the car. The doctor who saw him earlier was on leave, so we consulted another Cardiologist, who prescribed some blood test and a brain CT scan.
Taking him through the CT scan was equally tough, but somehow we managed to convince him. The reports were about to come after 3 hours, so we were told to wait. Mom was with me, so we decided to go to the Canteen and have some food. Since he was on wheel chair, we called the transport to take him with us, as leaving him alone is not safe.
As soon as he saw people eating, his sensory organs seemed to work very actively and he also wanted to eat a non-veg (fish) meal. That's one good thing about him - he still has high interest in eating tasty foods which is normal at his age. Since we have the holy month going on, non-veg is not cooked at home, so he wanted to utilize the opportunity to eat fish outside. Look at the glow at his face, while eating - I still wonder, how a person at his age can have such cravings for non-veg !!
All the reports seemed to be normal, except his sodium level being little low along with the CT scan showing, age related diffuse cerebral atrophy with chronic small vessel ischemic changes. And when I told the doctor how happily he ate that fish meal and showed him the photo, he said, he does not have any new severe complications, apart from what he has which is related to his age. But this is where, I have problems - why do doctors think, after 80, what he does is absolutely fine !! In my native, I see people in their nineties, riding a bicycle and doing fine absolutely. Some are even more than hundred but they are fit and fine, only because they follow a routine life with must walk everyday, which Dad does not.
After 2 days of medicine and electoral powder with salt, he came back to little normalcy and was able to write a cheque.
The family barber was called in, to shave him, to feel better. I had to extend my stay, to make Mom feel comfortable. She is the one who runs the show, with me giving all possible help and visiting them often, as much as possible. They are still not willing to leave my native place and come and stay with us. But things are becoming difficult day by day. If Dad would follow only a simple routine to walk for 10-15 minutes in the morning and afternoon, he will be in a much better shape, but he never developed that to be fit philosophy in his entire life. All he knows is eat good food and sleep as much as possible.
We tell him every day that a little walk is very much necessary, but he is not happy to walk. He feels it's difficult to walk, even though he is absolutely fine and his body is still very strong. So that makes me think, is it because of lack of developing that habit ? He should have developed that long back, after he was fitted with a pace maker. The elderly people in their nineties that I see also have memory issues, but I feel their habits have taken over their life now.
Does habits take over life when brain stops thinking ? A friend on hive (@ericvancewalton) replied to one of my post saying, it's highly likely that I also may develop Dementia and advise to go through some tests. He also mentioned that diet and lifestyle can better my odds of developing dementia even if I have the gene (which is quite possible). So that makes me wonder, what would be my odds ? If you follow my posts, then you know a lot about my lifestyle and simple diet habit.

It happens Sir, not just non-veg food, but generally whatever he/she habitually likes throughout the year, used to have a strong recurrence of craving during old age. I have seen many such instances in my relatives(Ageing people).
That;s correct. Old aged people generally have sedentary lifestyle and even more so a monotonous life, that is why they want more socialization, a morning or evening walk will be best for their health, but it is accompanied by a social group, then it's simply the best way out for them.
Habits are always deep-seated in Human life and become recurrent in old age. Because they do not require active cognitive effort, they have been internalized in our bodies.
I wish very good health for your father Sir. "Mausa" looks healthy and fit, just need to do some yoga, breathing exercises, and morning/evening walks.

I'm so sorry to hear about your father. Exercise and things like reading, puzzles, and word finds can help the speed of progression of this dementia. My dad never because argumentative or disagreeable but he began hallucinating and seeing things and people who weren't there during the later stages.
There's a specific gene you can be tested for to find out your own risk...it's the e4 variant in the APOE gene. If this e4 variant is present in your DNA your risk is greater (but that doesn't mean you'll develop dementia). There's so much they don't yet understand about it. Concussions/head trauma also increase a person's risk. Companies like 23andMe and other genetics companies can test for this if you want to know.
I will try to do some research and see, if we have facilities near me to do these tests. Interestingly, what I have seen here is that people who are engaged more in rituals and yoga bypass this.
Sorry to hear about the troubles of your dad. Walking regularly can do wonders indeed, especially at such age. Maybe he just doesn´t want to go for a walk alone?

That's correct, he needs someone, but unfortunately there is none.
My parents also react the same ....nothing is happening....
And that makes our life more difficult. It costs a lot to figure out by consulting a doctor and then he writing up a bunch of tests.

Even if you know you will develop dementia, there's nothing really you can do to avoid it
Sometimes I think there are all these mental problems because human is not meant to last that long, just science force us to survive that much

Well, if you talk about average life span, then it's less, but there were people who easily lived for a century, if practiced good simple diet and Yoga. Swami Sivananda is the oldest man in India , at 127 years, quite fit and fine , still practicing yoga daily and performing all rituals independently.

How beautiful your daddy, I am so sorry for what happened to him, fortunately he has you and his family who care about him and are there to be his support in critical moments. Best of health to him, dementia is difficult, my daddy is presenting this disease and sometimes I don't know how it will progress.

Unfortunately we cannot determine the genes we inherit unless we probably undergo early testing it were asymptomatic. I was symptomatic for the genes I inherited and how here I am with a lot of health issues.
I think like you've said, a lot of exercise will do well for your father.
As for food, I think dieting early prevents a lot of things

Wow! What a great family. I was so engrossed throughout the course of reading this post. I'm happy and elated how you were able to stand by dad side. I can relate with what you said about having people who are about 90 to 100 years still able to do things themselves. I can say that what we eat these days might cause some of the sickness and diseases we have now. Another thing I notice about elderly people is that if you take them out of their comfort zone, they tend to react negatively. This happened when we brought my grandma from the village to start living with us after her husband died. She didn't live more than a year with us before she died, and she was active before we brought her to the city.
That's the reason I don't force them to come and stay with me in the city, because the environment they are in is much better, green all around.
That is good. You can visit them from time to time during the holiday since no one can tell when it would be the last time.
I'm sorry to hear about your father, dementia it's really hard, I was a nurse assistant and I worked in a center dedicated to patients with dementia and Alzheimer's and other cognitive disease, sometimes they looks quite Lucide, the ones with a less heavy diseas other time it's hard to convince them to eat, wear a dress or doing simple tasks, some can be so aggressive too. By the way maintain a kind of routine it's really important for those patients, I send to you and your dad a big hug ❤️

Old age always brings different cravings for us. I also had Grandpa who did last year at age 96 years. When we eat green vegetables, he will decide to eat something else and we quickly turn up and start cooking new meal for him. So sometimes the nature can never be cheated as well. I followed you.
I happened to read your article. I'm a man from Europe. In my country, the average life expectancy is about 78 years. Life expectancy is certainly due to genes, lifelong habits and also the environment in the broadest sense. Stress levels etc. Just don't know how important what is.
Do you know how long your grandparents lived? What kind of health, psychological problems did they have? Do you know your family tree further back in time?
But 80 years is a respectable age in all countries of the world.

I'm sorry for what happened. It's good that the results came out normal. It might be difficult to convince your dad to take walks and be more active, but I hope he goes out and do it eventually. It must be hard on your mom, and I wonder if it is possible to hire a person to help in looking after your dad and encourage him to move more.
I think social media has brought in enough awareness about health and fitness these days. But the rats race we run makes it difficult to develop good habits. Here is why I say it.
I like to swim everyday. But I cant dedicate more than 20 minutes per day for it. Reaching the pool 10 minutes early reduces my sleep and 10 minutes more in the pool increases the traffic on the roads and delays me by 20 minutes in total. So keeping up with this habit is a tough job.
Social media also preaches simple life with limited money, but it's easier said than done.
I think it will be good if you at least force your dad to take morning walks. The good thing is that he is eating well and he has to improve that condition by taking walks too

My grandmother, my uncles on my mother's side all had dementia in their last years of life. For the past few years, my mother is also starting to not be what she used to be because she forgets things and often gets angry for no reason. The chances of this happening to me when I am old are there.
I hope your father will take your advice to walk every day because this is a healthy habit and natural medicine.
But most of all I hope my daughter when my wife and I are old will behave like you who are a good son.

I still think eating goodfood and sleeping plays a major role in health than taking a walk dad will be fine as long as he does 2 out of the 3. So if am to clarify this dementia happeneds to one through hereditary and not because of our environment lifestyle and food we eat?
Old age comes with a lot of challenges and this is just one of them, my grandpa suffers the same.
These are details with our health that must be taken into account from a young age so that when we reach an advanced age our body has enough energy to be able to resist all diseases that can cause greater damage to our body.
