Hello all, hope all of you are doing fine and it's almost the weekend. Hope you are having a good weekend so far. I love walking around neighbourhood and exploring eateries and restaurants. Many offered amazing food and yet to be discovered by many and this is why I always want to bring up visibility of these eateries and restaurants. The one I am introducing today is something that I went last evening and they impressed me especially that they close later than midnight. Best for people like me whom work late and would like to get something nice when everywhere else is closed.
The Place
Onoshi
Address: 8 Jln Legundi, #01-04, Singapore 759274
This place closes past midnight at 1.15am which is really amazing, to get a nice dinner or supper, this will be a good addition. It is tucked in at the Victory 8 building which have many more eateries and I will definitely be sharing more of them in future posts. It is approximately 15minutes by foot from my house and if the weather is too unbearable, the place offers ample parking spaces and will not break the bank for their parking rates. There are also roadside parking available as well at standard Singapore roadside parking rates.
Here's how the place looks like:
A really simple and cozy eatery. Amount of space may not a lot as compared to other eateries, but I do see loads of students going there for meals after sports training session etc. But for me, this is already very nicely renovated and I like to ambience like how usually Japanese outlets are. Beside the counter is a fridge with many cakes available if you just want to have dessert and not a main dinner, so everything is kinda flexible and one can really enjoy the goodness. If you see from the menu, prices are a little higher but hold your horses before slamming me, let's move on the food itself.
The Food
Was famished during my visit to Onoshi, so I scanned through the menu and then ordered the following:
While things were a little on the pricier side, the portions were not and so, no complains especially when one is famished.
So now let's dive into each of the items that we ordered.
Gyudon
Oh my, this is just a bowl of goodness. I love eating Gyudon and this bowl is really done nicely. Beef is not overcooked, the onion were browned to perfection and the sauce is all over the rice. Not just that, the beef is nicely marinated and so easy to bite on. The onsen egg with roe that tops the bowl just elevate the Gyudon so nicely and the portion of rice/beef/egg mixed together is just a mouth of greatness. I am certain the chef puts in alot of effort into making this Gyudon. When I finished it, I was really satisfied.
Classic Udon
This is what my wife had and I took some from her in order for me to share more about this bowl of Udon. A light Kunbu (seaweed) soup that is not overpowering but easy to drink. Would prefer a soup that is stronger taste such as those in Ippudo or other joints where there is garlic and miso. But this gives us a glance on how a simple light seaweed soup can taste as nice. The owners are generous with the amount of Japanese fish cake served. Usually when I eat elsewhere, it is a miserable 2 piece of fishcake at max. To top it off, the mushroom look really well cooked and wife commented that it is immersed well with the broth. The udon also came with the onsen egg with roe which is really nice when eating together with the udon. Another nicely crafted bowl of noodles that feels hearty.
Yakitori
Apologies, didn't take a picture of it. We gobbled down everything too quickly as it really smell nice and tasted good. If I go back, I will definitely take another picture of them in close up. For now, can refer to the photo above with all the food.
First, I will talk about the chicken yakitori. First bite in, wow! It is really tender, so nice to bite on and the sauce was not too salty. I like how they grill it that has minimal char yet still able to taste the slight crispiness on the outside. For me, it is definitely above average.
For the mushroom, another well done piece of food! I like how it tasted and every bite, you can taste the infused mushroom with the yakitori sauce, not such how they do it but there is no dryness and it was juicy.
Well done guys! It is really very nice and I love it, probably next time I can come and eat it without mains.
Overall:
This is a nice place to dine in and the price of the food is acceptable with larger portion of each main. Both the udon and gyudon that we order just made us feel so happy to wrap up the day with a nice meal. Yakitori was superb! Amazing sauce, grilled to perfection and so tender for the chicken and taste fuzed for the mushroom.
