This week, the topic for the #QC Community Weekly Contest #prompt is:
This week's topic:
Planned Obsolescence - Do you think it's good for companies to implement planned obsolescence in their products? Why? How many years do you think a product should last? What impact do you think planned obsolescence has on the economy for both companies and users? What other ways should companies find, instead of planned obsolescence, to stay in business and avoid going bankrupt like Tupperware did?

Planned obsolescence isn't entirely bad. It pushes companies to keep improving products. But when companies use it just to force new purchases, it becomes a problem.
Let me explain it with two examples:
I have an electric iron that is approximately 10 years old and is still working perfectly. I have another iron of the same company, which I bought last year. Although old iron is still in working condition, the electricity cost is much higher than that of a new one. So it's very natural for me to change the old one with the new model. Here, planned obsolescence from the company is perfectly fine, and I'm in its favour.
Now let's move to what's bad, should not be done, and many companies are doing that. I bought a new mobile phone a year ago, which was working fine, but now it suddenly starts slowing down right before a new model comes out. Literally nothing has changed, same usage, same apps, no virus, everything is the same except the performance of the device. Here, planned obsolescence is wrong, and I'm totally against that.
A fair lifespan for most products is around 7 to 10 years. After that, natural improvements make upgrading reasonable. But making them fail on purpose is a trick that companies use to force repeat buying. It's not fair.
For businesses, planned obsolescence creates steady revenue, and most companies love it. But it also creates bad press, returns, and negative reviews. For users, it means higher costs and growing frustration. It's a one-sided deal that only works while customers don't notice, and they're noticing more every day. Society also suffers from more electronic and plastic waste.
Evolution is important. Tupperware shows that even durable brands can fail if they don't evolve. Instead of making products wear out on purpose, companies should try new pricing models, product ecosystems, trade-in programs, and repair services. These options create revenue without dishonesty, and they attract customers who actually feel respected.
