Walking Off My Worries, or how a 5km Strolls Heal a Heavy Heart

By: A Guy Who’s Trying Not to Emotionally Eat an Entire Pizza (or two)

Let me get real for a minute, like, really real. Life sucker-punched sometimes. Not a little jab, not a light “Oops, spilled coffee on your shirt” type of moment. No, sometimes it's the emotional equivalent of getting hit by a motivational speaker’s flying chair during a TED Talk on resilience.

Stress. Bad news. Heavy thoughts. The kind of emotional turbulence that makes you want to scroll Instagram while lying in bed, wearing sweatpants that used to fit in 2021. You know what I mean.

But instead of doomscrolling or yelling into a pillow (been there, done that. Crying in the bathroom at work too), I did something radical.

I walk.

Yeah. That’s it. I walk. Just me, my legs, a questionable playlist from 2012 or even older, and five kilometers of headspace.

The Therapy Session With No Co-Pay

It started as an escape—one of those “I need air before I scream at the wall” situations. But somewhere between kilometer 1.4 and “Why is that goose staring at me like it wants my wallet?”, something shifts most of the time. I feel lighter. Not in a spiritual, unicorns-and-sage way. Just… mentally breathable.

Its not solving world peace or unlocking a billion-dollar mindset hack. I'm just moving. Forward. Literally.

Turns out, walking is stupidly effective. No expensive apps. No pressure to post about it (besides Actifit maybe. Oh, and Strava! (checkout @strava2hive !). Just footsteps and forward motion. Like Gary Vee says, “You wanna build self-awareness? Start by listening to yourself.” Well, my inner voice had a lot to say, and surprisingly, he wasn’t screaming.

Movement Is Medicine, and Sidewalks Are Free

Walking gave me permission to feel without exploding. It was like a podcast with myself. A sweaty, unfiltered TED Talk in motion. The kind of clarity I usually get after three espressos and a panic attack, but without the heart palpitations.

And here’s the deal: it’s not about being productive. It’s not about steps or calories or hitting some performance goal. It’s about movement being a bridge between chaos and clarity.

Your Turn—What’s Your “Walk”?

Maybe it’s running. Maybe it’s painting questionable watercolors of cats in space. Maybe it’s blasting Taylor Swift and ugly dancing in your kitchen (guilty here as well sometimes). Whatever helps you process the mental load, we need to talk about it.

Because walking turned into my ritual. My daily reboot. And if you’re navigating some emotional fog, I’m telling you: 5km might not fix everything, but it will remind you that your legs (and life) are still moving forward. Even when your heart feels stuck.

So now I walk off my worries. Like, literally.

And I want to hear from you: What’s your version of the 5km stroll? What keeps your heart from exploding when life throws a wrench in your emotional carburetor?

Drop a comment. Let’s turn this sidewalk therapy into a community conversation. Because life’s heavy—but maybe we don’t have to carry it alone.

Great working. Entertaining and touching... Or should I say "moving" with your honesty and humor.
Best of all, the invitation and inspiration to a community conversation.
All my life, for me it's been walking... Writing and other creative endeavors keep me sane.. But also can suck me in too deep sometimes.. Like reading a good book... Then it becomes something where I need friends to say, "love the painting, but have you eaten or stopped to use the bathroom even?"
Walking is fantastic.. Walking alone, with a friend, walking in the rain when it's warm...
I'm starting again recently to walk with a neighbor in the mornings..
What I think I need to do... Thank you so much for asking! Because you are helping me to clarify now, what it is that I need right now...I need to ask my neighbor for permission to walk alone on her land at other times also. I live in the country... The dirt and rock road is not super friendly to walk along, because so much dust flies whenever a car passes... And until we create a clearer path through the woods on our own land.

Thank you for sharing this! And glad I made you consider what you need to do know ;-) Have you been able to ask in the meantime?
Walking does a lot of good indeed! For the body, but certainly also for the soul! Like you said, sometimes walking with others (walked with a neighbour as well last week ;-) ), and sometimes you need to walk alone, to be able to clear your mind, order your thoughts, prioritize breathing again (which sounds like an unearthly thing that it needs prioritizing, and yet, believe it or not...).
Creativity is definitely also a great way to stay sane! For me it is music, and writing, and definitely photography (which I often combine with walking), and in all these things it is the same: if somebody wouldn't grab me by the neck and say "isn't this enough? You need sleep/food/rest/toiletbreaks", I would just go on and on and on :-)

I have the neighbor's permission, yes, but I haven't gone walking on her land alone just yet. I have just begun the past three days, to allow Lovey, the dog of our X person, to be untied all day long. It's been better than I had hoped for so far. It's been difficult and super rewarding to re-educate him and show him that a human can deserve his trust.. But now he follows me everywhere. That's mostly great too.. But the neighbor has two big dogs and I am not so sure they will be buddies.
So.. When I do go walking again, I will put him back on the rope for a little while.. No big deal. He will even let me. I would not let me, if I were him. But for now, I just want to let him enjoy his freedom for the first time in his life.,

@borniet...

This is the example, that we should gravitate too... LOL. LOVE reading your posts; so descriptive. So real....from the soul. For example:
"Stress. Bad news. Heavy thoughts. The kind of emotional turbulence that makes you want to scroll Instagram while lying in bed, wearing sweatpants that used to fit in 2021. You know what I mean."

Yes... I know what you mean. Sweat pants are my choice most days. Jeans and Tyvek suits, back before MS changed my life plan. But, we keep going! Yes?! I'm hopeful that you have a weekend of awesomesauce planned my friend. Go be awesome...

Thank you very much for your nice words! Damn man, sorry to hear about your MS, that’s a real gamechanger for sure! But indeed, we keep going! Like I always say “we’re in front of it, and we have to get to the other side of it, so let’s go, no matter how” (but then in Dutch, to my children, who then roll their eyeballs out of their heads ;-) ).
Yup, weekend of awesomesauceness: check! ;-) Hope yours was great as well! And do I have some good news for you, the next one is already on its way ;-)

It's such a good thing that you're found a way to return to self-connection and balance in challenging times, brother. Walking in the peace of nature helps me a lot in that regard. May your mental-emotional skies be crystal clear, my friend. 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙
