"Schönstes Fischerdorf der deutschen Nordseeküste"

Greetsiel ist bekannt als wohl "schönstes Fischerdorf an der deutschen Nordseeküste". Das Dorf zeichnet sich laut Reiseführern durch seinen Hafen mit traditionellen Fischerbooten, urigen Fischrestaurants und Backsteinhäuser aus dem 18. Jahrhundert aus.
Da wir in den Herbstferien ganz in der Nähe Urlaub machten, wollten wir uns diese oft als "Bilderbuch-Dorf" bezeichnete Fleckchen Erde unbedingt einmal anschauen.
An dem sehr großen Parkplatz am Ortseingang konnte man schon erahnen, wie beliebt dieser Ort bei den Touristen sein muss.

Greetsiel is known as probably the "most beautiful fishing village on the German North Sea coast". According to travel guides, the village is characterized by its harbor with traditional fishing boats, the quaint fish restaurants and brick houses from the 18th century.
Since we were vacationing nearby during the fall vacations, we were eager to take a look at this spot often referred to as a "picture book village."
At the very large parking lot at the entrance to the village, you could already guess how popular this place must be.

Die Zwillingsmühlen

Im 17. Jahrhundert haben Holländer hier in Greetsiel die Zwillingsmühlen hinterlassen. Beide Windmühlen sind noch funktionstüchtig. Die rote Zwillingsmühle direkt am Ortseingang aus 1706 mahlt noch und beherbergt einen Mühlenladen und ein Cafe.

In the 17th century Dutchmen left here in Greetsiel the twin windmills. Both windmills are still in working order. The red twin mill right at the entrance to the village from 1706 still grinds and houses a mill store and cafe.

Die grüne Mühle befindet sich ein paar Schritte weiter in Richtung Ortskern. Sie wurde 1856 errichtet und dient heute als Teestube und Kunstgalerie.

The green mill is located a few steps further in the direction of the village center. It was built in 1856 and today serves as a tea room and art gallery.

Als wir zu Fuß in Richtung Hafen und Ortskern schlenderten, kamen wir an diesem hübschen Backsteinbebäude vorbei. Hier werden wunderschöne maritime Deko- und Einrichtungsgegenstände angeboten. Leider war der Laden noch geschlossen und wir konnten nur ein paar Eindrücke durch das Schaufenster erhaschen.

As we strolled on foot towards the harbor and town center, we passed this pretty brick building. Here beautiful maritime decoration and furnishings are offered. Unfortunately, the store was still closed and we could only catch a few impressions through the shop window.

Der Hafen

Der Hafen von Greetsiel ist 600 Jahre alt und wird sowohl von Fähren als auch von Krabbenkuttern angefahren. Die Kutterflotte zählt insgesamt 25 Kutter und ist damit die größte Krabbenfischerflotte in Ostfriesland und wohl auch der deutschen Nordseeküste.
Obwohl wir morgens nach Greetsiel gefahren sind, waren schon viele Menschen unterwegs. Daran merkte man einmal mehr, wie beliebt dieser Ort bei Touristen ist. Von Stunde zu Stunde wurden die Straßen immer voller, und es war schwierig, Fotos zu machen, da die Gassen teilweise sehr klein und eng und von zahlreichen Passanten bevölkert waren.

The harbor
The port of Greetsiel is 600 years old and is served by both ferries and crab cutters. The cutter fleet counts a total of 25 cutters and is thus the largest crab fishing fleet in East Frisia and probably also the German North Sea coast.
Although we drove to Greetsiel in the morning, there were already many people on the way. From this you could tell how popular this place is with tourists. From hour to hour, the streets became more and more crowded and it was difficult to take photos, the alleys were partly very small and narrow and populated by numerous passers-by.

Direkt angrenzend an den Hafen reihten sich pittoreske Backsteinhäuser aneinander, in denen kleine Geschäfte und auch gastronomische Einrichtungen zu finden sind. Da wir zwar drei Frauen waren aber unterwegs mit einem 9-jährigen Jungen, haben wir den einladenenden Geschäften leider keinen Besuch abgestattet und sind stattdessen einfach durch die schönen Gassen rund um den Hafen geschlendert. Für den Geldbeutel auf jeden Fall die bessere Variante ;)

Right next to the harbor, picturesque brick houses lined up next to each other, in which small stores and restaurants can be found. As we were three women but traveling with a 9-year-old boy, we unfortunately didn't pay a visit to the inviting stores and instead just strolled through the beautiful alleyways around the harbour. Definitely the better option for the wallet ;)

An jeder Ecke gibt es schöne sehr einladende Restaurants und Cafés von denen aus man das Treiben im Kutterhafen beobachten kann. An einem lauen Sommerabend herrscht hier bestimmt eine tolle und entspannte Atmosphäre. Die strahlende Herbstsonne an diesem Tag ließ uns ein ungefähres Gefühl dafür bekommen, wie sich "La Dolce Vita" in Greetsiel wohl anfühlt ;)

There are lovely, inviting restaurants and cafés on every corner from where you can watch the hustle and bustle in the cutter harbor. On a warm summer evening, the atmosphere here is certainly great and relaxed. The bright autumn sun on this day gave us a rough idea of what "La Dolce Vita" feels like in Greetsiel ;)

Die hübschen kleinen Boutiquen lassen auch das Shopping Herz des ein oder anderen höher schlagen.

Vom Hafen ausgehend führt ein kleiner Kanal durch Greetsiel. Links davon ist ein kleiner Platz der von Restaurants umgeben ist. Im Sommer tobt hier bestimmt das Leben.

Auch Fahrten auf dem Kanal mit dem Kanalboot "Uschi" werden hier angeboten, oder man mietet sich ein Treetboot, um den pittoresken Ort gemütlich vom Wasser aus zu erkunden.

Trips on the canal with the canal boat "Uschi" are also offered here, or you can hire a pedal boat to explore the picturesque village from the water.

In den vielen kleinen Gassen gibt es auch einige Handwerksgeschäfte und Manufakturen.

There are also several craft stores and manufactories in the many charming alleyways.

So viel Laufen und frische Luft machen hungrig, also haben wir ein modernes anmutendes Restaurant im Dorfzentrum angesteuert. Es heißt "Gezeiten", ist sehr gemütlich eingerichtet und es roch dort so herrlich nach Kaffee und Gebäck, da es gleichzeitig auch ein Café ist. Bekannt ist dieses Restaurant auch für seine Burger, die mein Sohn und meine Schwester testeten. Ihr fragt Euch bestimmt, warum man in einem Fischerdorf nicht auch ein Fischrestaurant besucht, oder? Also wir haben in den Tagen zuvor schon so viel Fisch gegessen, dass es nun einmal etwas anderes sein sollte. Und Kinder kann man auch nicht immer mit Fisch locken. Die Burger schmeckten den beiden auf jeden Fall sehr gut, leider habe ich vergessen, ein Foto davon zu machen. Aber falls Ihr mal in Greetsiel seit und anstatt Fisch mehr Lust auf Burger habt, ist es eine absolute Empfehlung.
Ich habe mich an diesem Tag für Lachs an Rösti Talern und Salat entschieden, was sich ebenfalls als gute Wahl herausstellte.

So much walking and fresh air make you hungry, so we headed for a modern-looking restaurant in the village center. It's called "Gezeiten", is very comfortably furnished and smelled so wonderfully of coffee and pastries, as it's also a café. This restaurant is also known for its burgers, which my son and sister tried. You're probably wondering why you wouldn't visit a fish restaurant in a fishing village, right? Well, we had already eaten so much fish in the days before that we wanted something different. And you can't always entice children with fish. The burgers were definitely very tasty for both of them, unfortunately I forgot to take a photo of them. But if you're ever in Greetsiel and fancy a burger instead of fish, I'd definitely recommend it.
I opted for salmon with hash browns and salad that day, which also turned out to be a good choice.

Auf dem Rückweg zum Auto kamen wir wieder an den Zwillingsmühlen vorbei. Mittlerweile waren Tische und Stühle um die Mühle herum aufgestellt, und man konnte einen wärmenden Ostfriesentee unter den Flügeln der Mühle genießen.

On the way back to the car, we passed the twin mills again. By now, tables and chairs had been set up around the mill and we could enjoy a warming East Frisian tea under the wings of the mill.

Uns hat es in Greetsiel richtig gut gefallen, auch wenn der kleine Ort sehr stark von Tagestouristen frequentiert wird. Ich denke im Sommer kann es hier sehr voll werden. Die vielen Restaurants am und um den Hafen herum sind sehr einladend und beleben den Ort. Man bekommt Lust, sich einfach hinzusetzen und das rege Treiben zu beobachten. In Greetsiel ist alles sehr sauber, und für die Touristen herausgeputzt. Alles wirkt irgendwie schön und aufgeräumt... so als ob die Welt hier noch in Ordnung sei. Es gibt keine großen Hotels oder andere Bausünden. Man könnte schon sagen, dass es ein Bilderbuch Dorf ist. Ich hätte auf jeden Fall Lust noch einmal für einen Kurzurlaub wiederzukommen und am Hafen bei einem Glas Weißwein fangfrischen Fisch zu essen und die Seele baumeln zu lassen.

We really liked Greetsiel, even though the small town is very popular with day tourists. I think it can get very crowded here in summer. The many restaurants in and around the harbor are very inviting and liven up the place. You just feel like sitting down and watching the hustle and bustle. Everything in Greetsiel is very clean and spruced up for the tourists. Everything seems somehow beautiful and tidy ...so as if the world is still in order here. There are no big hotels or other architectural sins. You could say it's a picture book village. I would definitely like to come back for a short break and eat freshly caught fish at the harbor with a glass of white wine and relax.
