Filters - Let's Talk About It๐Ÿ“ฑ

First of all, the audacity of the person that came up with this topic is just remarkable!!

We have finally decided to shake this table in Hive Learners Community. We could have decided on any other topic, but no! We decided to start this week with violence.

Multiple shots fired with this one. Guess what though - I'm here for it. Let's talk๐Ÿ˜….

When you take pictures of yourself, do you apply filter to make yourself look better?

Of course, I apply filters to some of my photos ๐Ÿ˜„.

Designed Using Canva

In this day and age, it's quite difficult to see someone that does not use some sort of enhancement in their photos or videos. It is really hard. Whether itโ€™s editing a photo to make it look good or using a filter, they all fall under the same umbrella.

Why do I use filters?

Well letโ€™s not get delusional. When I use a filter, I know deep down that I donโ€™t look like that in real life.

Some of the filters that are available these days, are so exaggerated they make you look completely different. While others are so subtle that if one doesnโ€™t look long enough, they might miss it.

I use filters because they enhance my looks. The same reason camera men touch up their photos before sending them out to clients, the same reason music videos are edited before being released to the general public for consumption.

The same reason we โ€“ authors - proof read and edit our work a million times before hitting the publish button!

Everybody wants to look and present their best selves to the world. We all have our flaws or insecurities, and not everyone is comfortable with sharing them with the world - at least not yet.

Do you feel there is anything wrong with this?

This is an important question and my answer is - No in the short run, and Yes in the long run.

No in the short run: because it gives this temporary feeling of self confidence which sometimes gets us through our day.

For example; if Anna posts a picture with a filter and she get compliments, she goes on about her day with an improved mood which ultimately means increased productivity.

Yes in the long run: This is because it sets and promotes false beauty standards in the society moving forward.

For example, because Anna got compliments after posting a filtered picture, she subconsciously notes that she will only get said compliments if she uses the filters. This makes her seek them even more.

And because of this mindset, girls, or people in general, think that their appearance is not good enough. And this plants a seed of self inadequacy deep into their minds. They live with the gnawing and brewing feeling that they need to enhance something in their body.

Some people actually go to the extent of booking cosmetic procedures to โ€œfixโ€ parts of their bodies.

This does nothing but further validates their feelings of self inadequacy and encourages other girls to do it. Unfortunately it makes an imprint into the minds of the younger impressionable generation.

I donโ€™t need to point out how that is a problem!

Have you ever been deceived by someoneโ€™s picture, only to find something else when meeting them physically?

I wish I had an awesome story to tell but I donโ€™t ๐Ÿ˜„.

What I can say though is I commend the influencers that make it a point to show their real selves and not just air brushed photos or heavily edited videos.

It helps to be reminded that we humans are not flawless. We have our commas, and they should be celebrated and not condemned.

Thanks for Reading๐Ÿค—๐ŸŒน

As if I was expecting you to point out the obvious when you said "girls" but you chose to deviate from it, if you had made much emphasis on the word girls, you would really attract the violence you were looking for๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜…

But when it comes to filter, either it promotes false beauty or not, it something that happens in some cases without us knowing. For example users of iPhone. Taking a picture by any of the iPhone series compared to other android smartphone you will realise that there are some forms of picture enhancement applied to the picture already. If such person should claim he/she doesn't make use of filter that will be a lie or a show of hypocrisy because it has been automatically applied to the picture.

And moreover promotion of false beauty by filter is based on individualistic perspective, it only happens if you allow it to. As long as you have pride in your natural beauty no amount of filters or compliment on filtered pictures can change your mentality.

So let jist roll with the innovative tides of life and have fun while during it, afterall we are not immortals. As a human we should try to enjoy the little things available to us right now when we still can.

I didn't have the intention of attracting violence o๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜…. I was just airing my view.

I actually never thought of the iphone as one that added picture enhancement to their pictures. I always thought, it just had a clearer camera and that's why people always appear beautiful after using it. But now that you pointed it out, it makes sense.

As long as you have pride in your natural beauty no amount of filters or compliment on filtered pictures can change your mentality

This is also a very good angle too. But not a lot of people have that confidence in themselves though.

Either way, thank you so much for reading through my work and dropping such an intellectual and comprehensive perspective to it. Your comment means a lot to me. At least I know that I managed to catch someone's attention.

Thank you๐ŸŒน

Well written.

Personally, I believe that it is good to use filters to an extent but not overuse them. You could give your picture a touch of modification using filters but not to over do it as if you're having a big makeup.

The trick is to do every thing in moderation. Less is more indeed.

(Edited)

I love the perspective about filters and it's not bad. I stated in my post that there is need for moderation.

Just like too much edit and effect can ruin a music production, too much of filter can as well ruin the originality of a picture.

People overdo especially with product photography and that my issue with filters. They don't when to stop and in the course gaining people's attention, they mess up.
