Rare Petition Crown Fetches A Million Bucks

avatar
(Edited)

Remember that Dutch quarter from a few days ago that auctioned for over a million bucks?

Today I have an equally sensational story, only in this time it involves a coin from the United Kingdom, that fetched a whopping $1 million at auction making it the most expensive British silver coin to ever be sold.

The coin in question was a Petition Crown which looks something like this

Apparently the coin was created by some fella called Thomas Simon who was hoping to win back his job as the Chief Engraver at the Royal Mint. He presented the coin to King Charles II (portrayed in the coin) and he was impressed enough to re hire him:

The Petition Crown was a pattern coin produced in 1663 by Thomas Simon, a celebrated English medallist and coin-designer. The coin was submitted directly by the artist to King Charles II as a personal 'petition' against the contemporary coins designed by the Flemish brothers John and Joseph Roettiers, and for the further Royal consideration that only Simon's designs be used for all future specie now that machine-made currency had been adopted universally for the production of British coinage. source

Fast forward to today, and one of those coins has just made history by breaking a new auction record.

Generally, these coins are super rare and highly sought by rich pricks collectors for their spectacular artistry. For example, in 2018 a piece was sold for $649,000 in New York. And another one for $960,000 in January of this year!

Maybe I'll get myself one or two as well! What do you think? To be fair the details are amazing, like the neck or the hair... but that Charles guy is one ugly mofo 😂

Nah who am I kidding. Poor pleb ol me will just buy some junk as close to spot as possible :)

It's good to see the price (per oz) holding over 30$ for some time now. Rumors are the Chinese continue to buy like crazy for their solar stuff or whatever, another pump would be really nice 🤞

Here in my country, treasures with gold and silver coins dating back to long centuries ago are discovered quite often. Just a few weeks ago, a medieval ceramic pot with 30 gold and 72 silver coins from the 15th century was discovered under a school yard here in my hometown. I guess I should get myself a metal detector and head out to the nearest field. Who knows, maybe Mr. Simon left there something for me too :D Anyway, cool coin and cool story :)

I will like if you get one for yourself, the rate of the coin would be ever increasing, it's really impressive how the coin came into existence, The great work of Thomas Simon lives on, his artistry work win the heart of king Charles II and is still winning in term of price.

I think it's just for the rich people with too much money on their hands. I'd rather collect a bunch of cheaper/average quality silver compared to getting a single piece that is worth a ton.
