50th Anniversary of the Republic of Cuba (20 Centavos, 1952)

What's up plebs?!

As I promised I will be taking a break from showing off silver coins from Germany.

So today I will travel you to a coin from the other side of the ocean, Cuba!

Unfortunately my coin is quite beat down so despite my best efforts the details are not quite visible. In real life it doesn't look any better either, so here's a photo from Numista to give you an idea of how it's supposed to look like:

This is a 20 Centavos coin issued for the 50th Anniversary of the Republic of Cuba starting in 1902 and ending in 1959 with the commies:

The period began in 1902 following the end of its first U.S. military occupation years after Cuba declared independence in 1898 from the Spanish Empire. This era included various changing governments and US military occupations, and ended with the outbreak of the Cuban Revolution in 1959. During this period, the United States exerted great influence on Cuban politics, notably through the Platt Amendment. The post-1959 communist government refers to this era as the "Neocolonial Republic". source

Fyi, the obverse features the Cuban flag at the center, the fortress of Santiago de Cuba along with the lighthouse of the fortress. The text here is pretty standard

REPUBLICA DE CUBA
1952
1902
VEINTE CENTAVOS

For

Republic of Cuba
1952
1902
Twenty Cents

As for the reverse, we have the "La Demajagua", the place where the Cuban Independence war started.

Here the coin reads

CINCUENTA AÑOS DE LIBERTAD Y PROGRESO
1952

For

Fifty years of freedom and progress
1952

The tree on this side is known as Arbol de la Demajagua (Demajagua tree), which was viewed as a symbol of the independence. The tree sadly died on 1998 and was replaced with another of the same species.

Oh, almost forgot the edge. Nothing much to see here:

Anyways, this is the super quick run down. You can always Google anything you would like to learn more about :p

As for me, I did learn a lot about Cuban history while searching more info about the coin! The fun part of collecting coins. That and silver :)

Speaking of silver, we have 5 g of 0.900 purity. Not much weight but a good purity 😄

And this my fellow plebs concludes today's coin! If memory serves me right, this coin marks my fourth piece from the country. Hopefully I will be adding more in the future!

I wish it was in better condition... Oh well, it is what it is!

Stack on!

An interesting excursion into Cuban/U.S. history. It's really rather embarrassing to dwell on the way the U. S. treated its Caribbean neighbors. We made vassal states out of Cuba and Haiti. That history can be whitewashed. The truth has to be acknowledged. Between exploitation by the French and intervention from the U.S., poor Haiti never had a chance to develop an independent economy. As for Cuba, it was a playground for U.S. agribusiness. The island was ripe for radical change, and Castro offered that. I guess you can say we (the U.S. and Cuban elite) reaped what we sowed.

I don't know much about coins, but your blogs about coins are almost always prompts for me to take an excursion into history.

Yeah, collecting silver coin can be fun just for all the stuff I would otherwise never learn. Especially for countries that are not European! And being silver means they will always (probably) have some value!

Silver prices are rising with gold so good purity is lovely at this time.

Why the decision of a break from the sexy German eagles

I'm still wondering what Fidel did with all the silver he demonetized.

Now that my friend is an awesome coin! Cuban coins pre revolution are kind of hard to come anymore. As a matter of fact I've not seen one at a decent price in years now. That is very cool!

It's an interesting piece and I think it makes sense to make a piece to celebrate that event. I don't know much about Cuban history.
