🪱 The Most Badass Millipede?! 🪱

What's up friends!

It's been quite a while since I posted about a strange animal, that's mostly because I haven't encountered one with that wow factor, at least for my standards 😄

But today I stumbled upon one that deserves a spot in my blog.

Allow me to introduce you to what probably is the most bad ass millipede ever!

Meet Eucentrobolus tamulus, aka the armored millipede:

All the photos above are from inaturalist, feel free to click the link for more pics of this badass critter. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any videos for your viewing pleasure.

The species was first described in 1903 and is native in Southern India.

Not surprisingly, the species is best known for their hard, sclerotinized exoskeleton, which gives them an armored appearance. Imo, they are like they popped out from a video game or something :)

The exoskeleton helps them to protect them from predators and dehydration.

Much like other obscure creatures I have featured in my blog... They are poorly studied and understood so there's really not much to say about them.

There's not even a Wikipedia entry for the species! All I found was an old paper but I couldn't access it because I no longer have academia access.

Feel free to leave a comment if you can find any more info 😁

Ok, I guess this is it for today, hope you enjoyed discovering yet another wonder of nature with me!

P.S. Tagging @enginewitty for this one, I think he will love it 😄

There is one millipede that is common in Brazil, usually, people get scared about them since they look like centipedes which can be poisonous. But yeah they have hard exoskeleton. You can try to step on them and they still survive!

Rhinocricus padbergi , it is rounder. It is pretty common to find it if your house is near the woods! I didn't know but it has a non-toxic toxin that can make our skin turn purple lol saw some news while searching.

Exactly my first thought.

Wonder if it is venomous? That sting looks like gonna hurt so bad.

Asked chatgpt about it and here what I got:

Millipedes generally have two primary defense strategies: curling into a tight coil to protect their vulnerable underside and secreting chemicals to deter predators. These chemicals can be toxic or irritating.

Yeah I did that too, just generic info, can't come with an actual answer when it doesn't know it :)

Wow brother, that millipede looks straight out of a sci-fi game. It's exactly as you say it, super super badass. Nature never fails to surprise with its incredible creations. This one is damn scary man

It looks nice but it sucks to hear that there isn't much information about them.
