Finding Sanctuary - An Important WOTW message to the Community, Requiring Response

One year on the blockchain

On June 6th, 2022 I celebrated one year on the Hive Blockchain. The day went by with little fanfare.... although I did receive a @hivebuzz notification late afternoon which announced the occasion and made me smile... I could not believe where the time had gone! For a split second, I considered writing a post about it... but then I figured that those who knew me on the blockchain already knew my story and how blessed I felt to be writing, engaging, and connecting in this wonderful space.

When I first registered in the early summer of 2021, my primary aim was to write regularly... for myself. I figured if I had a space where I could write, somewhere to come where I could lay my thoughts down, let my ideas out, and allow creativity to flow unabated, I might get back into the habit of a passion that has driven me on and off throughout my life, and allow me the opportunity to get back to my long form writing that I had started the year before.

Connecting with Cal and WOTW

3 weeks into my Hive journey, on June 29th, 2021, I connected quite randomly and fortuitously with Cal @calumam. I was exploring Hive, as one does... reading across a wide range of communities and posts, when I came across this post by @calumam which was a couple of years old (hehe I like to go digging...)

Reading this post and then engaging with it's author changed the course of my journey on Hive... I found someone whose writing spoke to me philosophically, intellectually, and spiritually... it spoke to me also of mindfulness and creativity, and meaningful engagement. Cal's post sparked some inspiration and I wrote a short poem that is close to my heart, albeit that it earned absolutely zero rewards on the platform 🤣

The Lake of Imagination

It changed the way I approached Hive and allowed me simply to let go and write... about the things that had meaning for me and the things that brought me joy. I was able to connect inwards in order to express myself outwards.

One week later on July 6th, 2021 I entered my first POB-WOTW contest (a contest created by @calumam) with another poem: Forever 1942

... and the rest as they say... is history❣️

I have taken part in 20 WOTW contests since I joined the blockchain, missing very few as I adore this contest, the WOTW community, and the team who has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to keep it alive namely @caluman, @scholaris, and @nonsowrites. Felix has been an inspiration in the way in which he stepped up this past year to drive the contest forward and ensure its survival, and I think the whole community are incredibly thankful for his generous efforts in this regard.

The development and implementation of the WOTW merit system grading model, together with reading from some quality writers each week, had a positive impact on the quality and development of my own writing, and for that I am grateful.

Sanctuary

In WOTW, I found my first home and family on Hive - a community of like-minded individuals, a sanctuary for my writing, my mind, my heart, my soul. Of course, I have branched out into other communities and writing projects on Hive since then but WOTW will always occupy a special place in my heart, as I enjoy being challenged week in and week out to write at my very best alongside this wonderful community. The word sanctuary will be the first word prompt of the new iteration of dreem-wotw if the community gives us the thumbs up to take this forward.

WOTW on the Precipice

When I heard from Felix a couple of weeks ago that the contest was at serious risk of falling off the cliff into an abyss, due to the overwhelming personal commitments of the current grading team, I determined there and then that

the contest would not die on my watch!

I still wasn't sure how I was going to make that happen... But I trusted that a way would be found.

And so... I have spent a good portion of the last 10 days speaking to various people about how we can take the contest forward from here, and to that end, I now have a proposal for the WOTW community.

I have tagged everyone who has entered the contest in the past 6 months, as well as a few others who entered previously and may still have a vested interest in its future. I would very much appreciate your thoughts on the matter and an indication as to whether you would support this proposal for the continuation of the contest.

These ideas are a blend of those put forward by myself, @dreemsteem, @scholaris, @wrestlingdesires, and @alekst7, and we are all on the same page as regards the final proposals. I have the support and blessing of both Cal and Felix to take over the contest under the new proposed format, which will be described below.

To be clear from the outset, there is agreement between us that WOTW is just not sustainable or scalable under the existing format as it is too labour-intensive for a small grading team and some changes are required to ensure its continuity.

The Proposal

Grading team

The proposed new grading team who have all expressed a keen interest in being involved, include:

If anyone else is interested in one day becoming part of the grading team, they can simply drop me a message in discord at: SA_Sam1971#1299 to let me know and to be considered, as future needs arise.

The thought is that this team will continue to come up with exceptional words befitting of WOTW and will run the contest initially on a monthly basis, with the possibility of making it a twice-monthly event, if the interest and participation levels warrant it. The grading team would like to see this develop back into a more regularly held contest, to maintain interest and momentum.

Entry requirements

The Dreemport phase

As previously mentioned, the current format is simply not sustainable, especially if the contest were to experience any upward scaling in numbers (which we would love to see!) A small team is not capable of doing all the necessary checks as well as attending to any meaningful grading of all the posts.

As a result, it was felt that it would be best for the contest to fall under the auspices of the Dreemport project and for Dreemport to handle the backend administration of the contest, and to provide the grading team with a shortlist of entries to grade instead.

All WOTW posts would therefore need to be shared in Dreemport on a specific day each month so that they can be short-listed by public voting the following day.

At the end of the 24-hour cycle, the system will provide an official top 5 reader's favourites.

The Grading Phase

The top 5 will then be graded by the WOTW team in line with the current WOTW Merit grading system devised by @caluman and @scholaris. The top 3 graded posts (excluding staff) would become the official winning entries in WOTW and would earn additional prizes. DreemPort staff are able to enter, but will not be ranked along with the public. If they are found to be in the top 5, a special mention prize will be granted.

Where must I post?

Contestants will be allowed to enter WOTW posts created on any platform and within any community (eg; Hive, read.cash, publishOx) - this promotes greater inclusivity and engagement opportunities BUT they will be required to share the URL for their WOTW entry in Dreemport in order to be considered for any of the WOTW placings and prizes. They will therefore need to register on Dreemport, which is a quick and easy process... and the following two articles give a clear idea of the benefits and ease of use of the platform.

Which tag should I use?

The new tag to be used for the contest will be dreem-wotw as the token associated with the contest going forward will be the dreem token, and the contest will sit under the Dreemport family umbrella. Other layer 1 and layer 2 tokens may be on offer as prizes to contestants.

The proposal is to run the contest for 3 months, then take the temperature of the community and request some feedback, and then if the community is happy with the way in which the contest is running and wants it to continue, we will continue forward from there.

I'm having a hard time concentrating and I'm pretty tired these days @samsmith1971. Maybe it's just the weather but mostly I think I have been needing a break for a while.

WOTW was a beautiful idea. It didn't have the rules like other contests so it left more room to creativity. The problem was the reports and grading process took more effort than the rewards given. I'm not sure if POB is worth anything at the moment.

Adding Dreemport into the picture will free up the grading staff and also introduce a new crowd of writers. Sounds like you can't lose. I just want to add that it would be nice if WOTW were followed by a major curator. I like writing but sometimes I need an extra push.

As regards difficulty writing I hear where you are coming from, my friend. I think it probably has a bit to do with the weather, the market, and people needing to take a breath too 🤗 We all need to write in the breaks as @dreemsteem would say, and most people have been through quite a bit these past 1 - 2 years. The timings of WOTW have also necessarily been less structured and more fluid these past few months, with turnaround times being slightly unpredictable as it was all on Felix's shoulders. If we can gain support for the proposed direction and continuity of WOTW, we will take it forward and if it maintains or gains traction, it will survive.

As regards a major curator, we were not planning to approach any directly but if there are any who would like to sponsor this WOTW institution going forward, to aid its continuity and success, we'd love to hear from them...

As for general Hive curation groups, I am not sure how one draws the attention of the likes of @ocd or @ocdb curation specifically to these contests when the entry posts can be written in any community, other than for contestants to post their entry into appropriate Hive communities that already exist and which already have visibility under OCD/OCDB, to give themselves a chance of being seen and curated. Perhaps there is a way for the WOTW community contest to be curated through the #dreem-wotw tag as we do not have a specific community set up on Hive. @livinguktaiwan , as an OCD mod, do you know whether Hive post tags can be or are ever used by OCD / OCDB to curate or whether Word of the Week would need to be a community in itself, set up on Hive, to draw the attention of curation groups such as OCD/OCDB?

Hi there Sam!

OCD doesn't curate on the tag, the curators normally trawl through communities as that's the easiest especially when we know a community has a certain level of quality.

Let me take a look at this when I get home later on to see if there's anything we can do to suy users

What would I say? I believe @mineopoly has said it all. Irrespective of the fact that writing is fun, people need some sort of motivation to balance the scale.
I love WOTW prompts and writing in general, but a lot of things have happened which has affected my zeal to write as usual. Not sure if I will be participating but will try to support the submissions with curation.

I hope you won't mind me interjecting here.

@itsostylish , on my return to the blockchain, your story for inkwell was one of my first Wows! Truly, I was blown away by the way you transported me into a South African landscape and made me fall in love with Grace and Chipo.

Then, just this week you had me chuckling with your secret agent mission to the market. If I suffered from comparisonitus, then your writing would have me stirring inside my pot of doubt in no time, but thankfully, I write for myself. To have fun and play and swim in the stream of consciousness. Whether I am "good enough" doesn't come into it.

In many ways, it was my time in DITO/WOTW that opened that part of me. It was because of the community, the magic of words, the curiosity within me, and knowing I'd be joined with other like-hearted souls, that I knew I had found a true sanctuary for my creative Little Voice.

I hope you will join. I encourage you to put down the unwarranted, and limiting, belief that there is such a thing as "good enough". Step inside the stream (or lake) with Sam and I. Step inside your creativity and delight those you share with. 💛

Oh Sam! This is very noble of you. I was sad when I read the last post by @scholaris on this matter. I love Wotw because the prompts encouraging deep thinking and creativity. I'm glad to see that Dreemport has taken over. Although I may no longer be graded, I'd continue to participate. Looking forward for the official announcement of the launch of the first prompt "sanctuary"

Im sorry Samantha but I'll not be letting you hear any more bad news today. Like you found solace in the pob-wotw. I was frustrated sometimes when I couldn't actually get my post to be at the top but then for someone who wasn't a traditional writer and who hasn't been writing for years I certainly needed to improve on myself and I tried, each week brought with it something special and I must mention that the joy that came with having a lot of POB upvote on that certain post was the major push.

This new idea will certainly flourish and I'm going to be part of it no matter what but then we'll want to make it appealing to a number of other users. That's where the rewards come in, that little push is needed to keep the person going. ..

I love your drive Samantha, I'm not experienced so I might not join the team just yet, ill just try to enjoy the new set of writing phase with new people grading...it'll certainly be a lot of fun.

But I'm wondering, is there a way to reach out for funding, because the team would need it a lot to keep the going...I believe y'all need to earn from the work you do one way or the other...that's that little push.

hi Chinco... yes under the original POB-WOTW we used to get support from @proofofbrainio, @trostparadox, @onealpha, and @richardcrill either independently or through the POB upvote trails managed by Cal and Felix (I think my understanding is correct). If contestants use the #vyb and/or #pob tags on their posts, then we do have a few VYB curators who are also active in the WOTW community and capable of curating the WOTW posts as part of their general VYB curation responsibilities. This would kick off the curation trail which is still supported by a number of people 🤗 thank you for your support and I would hope to see you writing in the contest going forward.

I'm all a flutter with excitement and anticipation.

My own experience on the blockchain brought me to that delightful feeling of sanctuary with WOTW/DITO. A week to savour a word, and then allow the creative juices to explode on the screen was something that I am finding hard to put into words. It was magical and lifted me up every single time I wrote.

As you know, I have only recently returned, and I did so because I wanted to return to writing. Just for me. For the sheer joy of connecting to the stream (lake, in your case 😊) and diving deep. But, it was more than that. It was also about writing in a space with like-hearted people and re-building that sense of community that has never felt so full and real as it did here.

So, it seems, I returned just at the right time. This 👆, all that you've written above, is why my soul sang to me, and made my return a done-deal, even before I realised the whys and hows. Because, when you follow your intuition, and step inside in-no-sense, magic happens. 💛

June 6th is my eldest daughter's birthday, so that date is significant for me and I see that for you too. Congratulations on this year of progress in this great blockchain. Although I haven't participated in the contest for a long time, the times I did I loved the motivation of the word of each week. It's really great.

Hive is a whole universe that can offer us something new every day. And today it was like that for me. I read something before about Dreamport but didn't pay attention to it at the time. Today I am discovering what it is and I thank you for the mention. As for the contest, it seems noble to me to keep it as a meeting place for many writers. Surely I will be in this first edition of the new format. I'm sure a great project will come out here. Success friend.

Before saying anything else firstly I would like to appreciate the proposal and how nicely you have explained it wow. I got everything on the first attempt.

Talking about the WOTW contest, I participated once and I gave me learning by reading to other users ( you were the person who motivates me to take part hehe)

Happy belated anniversary on hive Sam, you have to build an amazing community on Hive. And about polishing your talent I guess you know it more very well because when I am reading your writing I get the same vibe -speaking with heart ❤️

It would be really nice if we all could continue this. It would be an awesome collaboration of Dreem and Pob hehe. We already made some incredible challenges before in other communities. And every time what we earned was fun, learning, jew friends and prizes along with surprises hehe.

WOTW is a writing prompt challenge, with prizes :) It used to be weekly, but the schedule had to be loosened. Now t the contest itself must evolve.

hi riverflows 💗 As @wrestlingdesires has mentioned WOTW or Word of the Week is a writing prompt contest. It was started by calumam, and later run and managed by scholaris, with nonsowrites providing grading support. Due to the off-chain personal commitments increasing for the existing grading team, the contest needs a new home and new people to carry it forward if it is to survive. I have stepped forward, along with a lovely people mentioned above in my post, to take on the responsibility. We hope that the proposal meets with the community's approval and that they will voice that approval in the comments and come and support the contest by participating. The words chosen are always thought-provoking and the response from the writer/participant can be any form of creative writing viz: short story, poetry, discursive essay. thank you leeart. We do hope to be able to pick up the mantle from scholaris, and run with it. We have an able and willing grading team, and a means to make the contest both scalable and sustainable... but we do need the community to come forward and let us know if we have their support to take this forward and an indication as to whether they would take part or not. !PIZZA

The people we meet first here - may it be by chance or by destiny - for sure have great impact on our hive journey
For example I never was aware WOTW or @calumam im my 10 months journey :-D haha, I first had to look for what WOTW means at all!
But I think I came to dreemport and met @dreemsteem by meeting you?
For me the SMASh and @melinda010100 were my door way into this universe :-) wich I am very thankful for :-)

I love the idea and would love to be a part of it. You did so well to have stood up to the occasion. The truth remains: contests encourage participation and expose good content creators in the ecosystem. Many people got their first credit from contests on the platform. If not for contests, many good content creators would've remained hidden.

thank you, Mfoniso, your words mean a lot to me💗🤗🙏 and you are so right... taking part in contests, provide a nice platform for content creators to thrive and showcase and they help to create bonds with other people and build community... it allows you to feel part of a community and a family... especially if you happen fortuitously to fall upon something as awesome as WOTW. And then get super lucky and have lightning strike twice... for me...because I not only found calumam and scholaris and WOTW, but I also subsequently found dreemsteem and dreemport 💗 And now we get to try to bring two of my favourite things on Hive together. I'd love to see you taking part... and if you ever want to do more than just take part...let me know and I will pop your name on the list for consideration when a grading spot opens up (I was kinda maybe getting that you were alluding to that? WOTW or Word of the Week is a writing prompt contest. It was started by calumam, and later run and managed by scholaris, with nonsowrites providing grading support. Due to the off-chain personal commitments increasing for the existing grading team, the contest needs a new home and new people to carry it forward if it is to survive. I have stepped forward, along with the lovely people mentioned above in my post, to take on the responsibility. We hope that the proposal meets with the community's approval and that they will voice that approval in the comments and come and support the contest by participating. The words chosen are always thought-provoking and the response from the writer/participant can be any form of creative writing viz: short story, poetry, discursive essay.

I can tag you when the first contest goes live so that you can come along and join in...in the meantime, would you like to follow the links in my post to read about Dreemport and go and register there so that you will be ready when the contest launches? You can also start sharing your posts from the day you register (excluding weekend days) !PIZZA

Fabulous, so you are already registered on the Dreemport website which means that you can curate your 5 a day and share a post URL in there too :-) When the contest launches, we will be requiring contestants to share their posts in Dreemport on a specific WOTW dedicated Dreemport day each month. All... apologies for the intrusion once again... 😉This post on Word of the Week is an offer to take things forward for the community, to ensure that, with @scholaris withdrawing, that the contest continues, at least for the immediate future. I am hopeful that there are more of you out there who saw value in what Word of the Week brought to the community and who would be keen to take part once or twice a month if it were to be kept alive. If you have been tagged, it is because you took part in one of the WOTW contests in the past 6 months or are somebody who used to support it regularly in the past. I truly appreciate the feedback received so far but would really like to get more input from others who have not commented as yet, so that we can get an indication of how many people plan to take part going forwards under the Dreemport banner, as described in my post. This proposal to support the continuation of the contest has received the support of @scholaris and @calumam. It would really help us to finalise our approach, and the tiered grading model for determining the winners, if we had a realistic idea of numbers 🤗 May I ask if you have a moment if you could help me out here and please pop a quick comment on this post to indicate whether you are keen to take part in the next iteration of Word Of the Week or whether it is not something that you can see yourself doing. Yes, I am offering with a team of people (named in the post) to take up WOTW and ensure it continues... so that writers can still keep entering... it would be done using Dreemport and would fall under the Dreemport umbrella going forward. Wow, this is wonderful. WOTW spirit back online.. I can see that the grave has well been plotted, and the new team are up to the task.. WOTW is in safe hands again.

The only thing is how possible it will be for readers to vote appropriately, as some contestants really do not get much engagements under their contests as others. I understand that come contents might not be relatable of attention seeking enough to readers, and that should be a reason enough not to be considered for voting, but what about those contestants that has made good connects over the time and will always have more readers engaging under their contestants, and more votes, don’t you think past influence would favor those once most ?, but since there is going to be another grading system after the public votes, I am more than open to see how well it will work.

Thanks, my friend. the beauty of Dreemport is that the posts are curated by the public (anyone registered with Dreemport) and they get assigned 5 random posts by the system so they don't get to choose whose posts they curate officially for Dreemport rankings. This way you have different people reading your posts each day you submit posts to Dreemport and therefore for each contest ...and there will be people curating the following day who didn't even take part in the contest. Of course anyone who wants to have their say in the curation of the contest posts, simply needs to log in to dreemport the day after Submissions day and curate hehe. We have people coming to Dreemport brand new...from other platforms like read.cash who know nobody... and have been ranked first on debut... so I think in general any potential bias is well filtered by the system. Nothing is perfect but your article will be curated by 5 random people people each time and once we have our top 5, then thosewill be graded against the Merit grading model developed by Cal and Felix... if we are able to extend the grading down the line to cover more entries, we will...but for now...we have to feel the waters and work out what is most sustainable as we know from Cal, Felix and Nonso's experience that grading every submission takes an inordinate amount of time and is not realistically sustainable if we want the contest to be scalable. Thank you for your kind support, my friend. I think each iteration of WOTW has to take the contest forward in a way that is sustainable at the time. Our aim is to take the best bits of WOTW and retain that essence... and then make it more manageable, scalable, and sustainable. I know that Felix had mentioned some time back that he would like to be able to have more involvement from the community in deciding the winners... and I think part of that was achieved by the engagement metric that he and Cal introduced, and part of it will now be achieved by the Dreemport ranking system, where any dreemer (including contestants of WOTW) can log in the day after Contest Submissions Day, and curate the WOTW posts and effectively vote for some of their favourites through the ranking system. In this way they have a say in deciding the shortlist for the final WOTW grading... a readers' favourites so to speak. But it is great to have you onboard...watch this space !LUV !ALIVE

You can only submit after having done curation, you start your daily curation from the curation menu and once that action is completed (voting + ranking) you may submit your post. The submissions are open for any well-written content unless the page mentions requirements such as on Friday.

**Voting is whether you accept or reject the post - that is only in terms of whether you think it is "spam" or not. You do not need to vote or comment on any platform that is your own choice how you engage with the submissions.

This is so exciting. I'd love to get involved again. I'm glad to see the tag #dreem-wotw and hope it catches on. You can count on me.

Well that was my optimistic side speaking. Let's get a real answer from my practical side. I can't do the grading or hosting but I will write an entry someday and maybe even make some comments on other posts. Given my track record on putting out posts these days I would say there is about a 30% chance of me writing something. If the contest gets going and I see some funny or interesting things then I may be even more inclined to get involved. Sorry to be completely honest, but I do wish the best for wotw.

Even though I'm not familiar with WOWT, I am with DreemPort and I think it's a really wonderful partneship and makes every sense to me! This will enable both initiatives to grow alongside, in my oppinion, which will be great to witness 😊.
