The goodbyes

The first time in everything always seems awkward sometimes but then when it comes to the first time in love or crushing on someone it might look stupid to someone else but the person in love will never feel stupid.

I am not the type that crushes on guys because I am used to staying indoors and my mom must never see me or my siblings with any guy not to talk of falling in love with any guy.

But then I couldn't run from falling in love or crushing on someone forever, so it happened when I was in secondary school and I was learning tailoring, where I was learning was kind of far from our house. There was one cute guy in my shop's area that every girl there was crushing on, while he was crushing on me maybe because I was new in the area or probably because I am ugly. I just don't know what attracts him in my body.

I wasn't aware of him crushing on me because whenever I came back from school I was always inside the shop learning one or two things on my boss's machine. So one day I closed as usual and was on my way home when I heard someone shouting, "Hello, hey". But I didn't stop because I didn't want to follow any guy talk.

He jumped in my front just to stop me from running.

"What is it?" I shouted at him.

"I just wanted to talk," he replied.

"About what? Because the last time I checked we were not even friends," I replied but what was on my mind was different from what I was saying because I never expected a cute boy like him to follow someone as ugly as me despite all the girls running after him he chose me.

After giving him a tough time, I later gave him my number, meanwhile, it was a Nokia touch and I could only send SMS since there was no WhatsApp then. On my way home I was smiling without seeing anything all that was ringing in my head was his cute face and his sweet voice. Before I got home he sent me a call card just because he didn't want me to give excuses for not messaging him.

The last thing he wrote at the end of his text was, " My name is Jay".

I smiled and texted him back, "Rosemary, but you can call me Rose".

We started sending text messages to eachother but we had never stood on the street to talk so nobody knew what was going on between us, until one day I didn't get his text, and no calls for three days. Meanwhile, I couldn't go to his house nor could he come to mine so after closing from work I always stood somewhere close to his house maybe he would come outside but he didn't and that went on for a week.

Sometimes I cried at night if he had left, but a week after he passed in front of our shop and I forgot we agreed not to talk face to face so I rushed out of the shop.

"Where have you been?" I asked with my eyes full of tears that were ready to drop.

"I.. am babe am sorry, I lost my Dad," he replied with tears in his eyes.

That was the first time he was calling me babe and his soft voice gave me goosebumps, I hugged him without realizing we were outside. Until my boss came to slap my head from the back.

"Don't you know you guys are outside?" My boss asked, but she was kind enough to have allowed us to talk.

She continued...

"You guys should go somewhere nice to talk," my boss said. She gave me some minutes to go out with him because that was the only time I could see him.

"What happened to your dad?" I asked when I got to his house, I never knew he was from a wealthy home until the day I entered their house.

"He was sick before," he replied.

"And your Mom?" I asked while holding his hands so tight.

"She's not here, she's married to another man," he said as tears rolled down his cheek.

I felt pity for him because there was nothing I could do to help him.

"But then why don't you call me, I was so worried," I replied.

"I don't want to disturb and more so I don't even know where my phone was immediately I got the news about my Dad," he replied.

"Oh am so sorry about that," I said to him.

Some weeks later he got back to school and everything was moving smoothly, he was strong enough to get back on his feet after losing his father. One day I was at work and I saw two beautiful cars that drove along his house so I went outside to see where they were going they entered his compound, so I texted him.

"Babe, what's going on?"

"Nothing, my mom came to check on me and my siblings," he replied quickly as if he was expecting my text.

Three days after...

"Can we go on a fun fair date at least we haven’t go out before," I got his text in the middle of the night but I didn't read it until it was daybreak.

I was on my way to school when I read the text so I quickly texted him back, "I haven't had a trip to the fair before".

We got to the fair, and he bought me a necklace and then said, "We need to talk,".

Immediately he said that I knew something wasn't right but then I acted fine, "About what?" I asked.

"Am leaving," he said.

"To where? Why now?" I asked with a confused look.

"My mom came to take us but I told her I needed to say goodbye to someone special before I left," he said as he grabbed my hands.

I was lost and didn't know what to say than, "I really appreciate the time we spent together, and I will always remember us,".

"I will definitely come back for you," he replied.

"I believe you and I promised to wait for you," I said to him.

We hugged for some minutes before we went our separate ways, ever since then I never set my eyes on him but his cute face never faded away from my head.

hi @rosebaby this story reads like a true story, yet it is tagged #fiction and written in response to the fiction prompt. Please could you clarify. Did you make a mistake with the remit or is it actually not a true story? 🙂 We just need to know whether to treat it as an off-prompt submission for the month, which writers are allowed to do. It was a moving recounting of a young love. A nicely balanced piece with a soft arc... but how sad that their paths never crossed again. Life happens and things turn out as they are meant to...

Thank you for writing in The Ink Well.

It was a fiction story and I was only thinking of making it more real that was why I wrote it that way.

What a compelling story of how a young girl found love in the most unusual way. The young love that was still at its infant stage was faced with a strong enemy, "distance." Hopefully as he promised they'll see again.

Beautiful story, full of romance. I regret the death of the boy's father and the separation that occurred due to the unfortunate event between them. Perhaps in the future, they will meet again.

I enjoyed your fictional story.
