On a hot summer day, only a glass of cold lemonade, good music, a nice party and talks of crystals made Camila feel like she could accomplish anything she wanted. She knew big things would happen this year that would change her forever. A change for good, she hoped.

It was a special day for Camila, not just because it was her 18th birthday, but because she was able to work with her grandmother as a crystal healer as she promised her a few years ago. Camila wanted to be just like her grandmother. She wanted to learn everything about crystal healing and become the best healer in their town.

Everyone gathered around a table in the backyard. Camila's crush Justin was there too, and he was staring at her and smiling. Camila never knew what was going on in his mind. He smiled at her and made meaningful eye contact with her, but he was with someone else. He was with Bella, they were on and off, but they were together. Bella was there too. She came with Justin. Justin, Camila, and Bella were all childhood friends.

“Nice party! I was just telling Justin, you look beautiful in that dress,” Bella said. It was obvious she was jealous because all the attention was on Camila.

“Thank you,” Camila replied coldly. She didn't want to interact with Bella and bear her attitude. She often bragged about being with Justin. But, their relationship wasn't stable.

Camila made an excuse and went to greet her other friends.

Bella became angry at Camila because she left in the middle of their conversation.

Camila didn't like Bella because her grandmother Annie had told her Bella's family were into the dark arts and did black magic. It was their profession, and she should stay away from them.

Finally, the time arrived for blowing out the candles.

Camila blew out the candles on her cake and wished that she could talk to crystals. She looked at everyone and giggled out of joy before she started to open her presents. You could still see childhood innocence in her eyes.

Camila looked at the black tourmaline necklace and selenite her grandmother Annie gave her for her birthday. It made Camila jump out of joy. They were excellent for protection. She hugged her grandmother Annie and thanked her for such a beautiful present.

“Camila, don't forget, crystals have personalities of their own and when you speak to them, they can hear you,” Grandmother Annie said to Camila with a smile.

“I won't ever forget it, grandmother,” Camila said, excited about the crystal.

Camila whispered to the black tourmaline necklace and selenite, “We will have a blast talking to each other,” and then laughed and ran to her room to put her crystals in a special box where she kept her other crystals.

The birthday party was over and everyone gone to their homes. It was time to sleep. Camila put on her pajamas and got her ginger candy from her secret drawer away from the eyes of her mother and started eating. She was lying in bed when he heard someone calling her name.

“Camila........ Camila......... Camila........”

Camila looked out of her window, it was Justin. He had his guitar with him.

“What are you doing here?” Camila said surprised.

“Come down, let's go for a night out. I have a surprise for you. I forgot to give you a present!” Justin said thrilled.

“Ok, I'll come down, just don't make any more noise, or my parents will wake up!” Camila said, laughing at Justin because he was a mess.

Camila changed her clothes and tip toed towards the front door, making sure no one saw her.

“You smell like something, what is it?” Justin asked.

“Don't tell anyone, it's just candy!” Camila replied.

“What flavor is your favorite?” Justin asked.

“Ginger!” Camila replied.

“I'll remember that for the future!” Justin said, laughing.

Camila and Justin walked in the streets. They had a good time. Justin sang for Camila a song he wrote specifically for her.

They didn't want to put a name on their relationship. But, it was obvious that there was a chemistry between them. Camila wondered if Justin would stop being friends with Bella. But, he wasn't sure what he will do, which made everything complicated.

Camila came back home at 3:30 a.m. Early morning, her training for crystal healing was starting. She had to get some sleep.

That night, Camila dreamed about all she ever wanted in life: a superpower that enabled her to talk to crystals and how to heal with the help of crystals. She was in a world different from the one she lived in. A world full of crystals.

"She can hear us........ She can hear us," black tourmaline said with excitement.

Camila didn't know what to say... It was all new to her.

"Hey, Camila be careful, we see something dark in your future, who you trust must be worthy of your trust," selenite said.

Camila in truth could hear how the crystals sounded like, how they behaved and interacted with humans.

Her dream was like real life.

When she woke up, she was excited to tell her grandmother Annie about her dream and how she could hear and talk to crystals. She needed to tell her grandmother about selenite's warning. When Camila arrived at her grandmother's house, which was a few blocks away, she couldn't talk to her because she had clients. She had to wait.

When her grandmother was done, they sat down to talk and Camila told her all about her dream. Grandmother Annie listened attentively to Camila. When she was done talking, her grandmother said to her, “Camila, my dear you have a gift, you can communicate with crystals in your dreams in the astral world. You must be careful because lower entities from the dark realms find people like you and steal their gift for themselves. They make good-hearted people like you lose the light in their hearts. They make you become cold-hearted if you are not careful. You have to protect your light, because they can see you now! Everything is energy, Camila! I will send you protective energy, but you have to be careful.”

Grandmother Annie took some books from the library shelf and gave them to Camila. It was the beginning of her training, and she had to read those books. They were all about crystals and healing with crystals.

On the way home, Camila was thinking hard about what her grandmother told her when she bumped into Bella.

“Oh, I was just coming from the candy shop, I just got some candy, would you like one?” Bella asked innocently.

Camila was hesitant to take one of those candies, but she needed sugar at that moment. They all looked absolutely delicious. There were so many to choose from. They were all ginger flavored. She took one and put it inside her mouth. How did Bella know ginger was her favorite flavor?

Bella and Camila walked to Camila's house. Bella was so nice to Camila that she thought she should reconsider what her grandmother Annie told her about her family profession.

Camila was happy she had a special gift, but on the other hand, the warnings her grandmother gave her made her worried about her future. Her grandmother promised her she would teach her all she knows about crystals and the astral world. Camila was glad she was not alone, that she had someone by her side to share these things. She had friends at school, but she never had anyone to talk to about this stuff.

That night, Camila felt a strange energy around her. She put her selenite on her other pillow and wore her black tourmaline necklace and asked them to repel all the bad energy from her.

She dreamt that she is running in a jungle and a shadowy figure with no face who is wearing a black cloak is running after her. She reaches a cliff about to be thrown into the sea where an energy pushes her back to safety. The shadowy figure couldn't come closer because an energy was creating a barrier between her and it.

“I want to smash your pretty face,” the figure said with a coarse voice. She saw the black tourmaline and selenite her grandmother Annie gave her as a birthday present are floating in the air speaking to her, “Camila wake up....... Camila, wake up now!”

Camila woke up gasping for air.

She immediately called her grandmother and told her what she just saw in her dream.

“Oh, dear, I told you to be careful! You've been cursed! But it is good that you used selenite and black tourmaline, these crystals prevented that entity from coming closer, and harm you!” Grandmother Annie said worried. “We should do a cleansing now!”

Camila rushed to her grandmother's house, and she prepared her a cleansing bath with herbs. She felt a fog of negative energy lifted off of her.

“You are generally protected. The spell castor must have made a link to you, did you take anything from someone? Or notice someone do anything suspicious like taking your hair or nails or a piece of clothing?”

Camila thought hard, but nothing of this kind happened to her. After a few minutes, she remembered the ginger candy.

“Would a candy count?” Camila asked.

“Yes, who gave you the candy?” Grandmother Annie asked.

“Bella,” Camila replied.

“I told you to stay away from her!” Grandmother Annie said.

Camila didn't know what to say. She made a big mistake taking that candy from Bella.

“Don't worry now, we took care of the curse! If we didn't do the bath, the entity they sent towards you would have tried to lower your vibration to better control you! I will do some healing for you as well to make sure it is gone for good! Who told her your favorite is ginger?”

Camila frowned and said, “Justin must have told her!”

“Well, you should stay away from both of them,” Grandmother Annie said.

Camila wasn't sure about Justin and she thought that it is only wise to listen to her grandmother Annie. She stopped interacting with Justin. Justin confronted her about her cold behavior, and she told him the truth, but he denied everything. They had a whole fight about this.

"Get your head out of those books and crystals and live a little!" Justin said.

"I will never leave my books or my crystals!" Camila said.

"I wrote a new song for you, don't you want to hear it?" Justin asked.

"Will you stop being with Bella? " Camila replied with a question she was meaning to ask him a long time ago.

"No, what are talking about?! she is my friend!" Justin said.

"Then No!" Camila replied.

"You're breaking my heart, Camila!” these were Justin's last words to her.

Camila got angry that night, and unfollowed Justin on all her social media apps. And this was the end of their relationship.

About 5 years have passed. Camila continued her training with her grandmother and became a crystal healer, but she could never forget about Justin.

One day, she heard from one of her clients that Justin and Bella are getting married. She felt her whole world is crumbling on her head. She was broken-hearted. It was at that moment that she realized how much she loved Justin.

When Camila came back home, she gathered all her crystals and asked them to tell her if Justin really loves her or if he really betrayed her, or if Bella and Justin together planned to curse her.

That night, she dreamt Bella and Justin were having a big wedding. They were in love and happy together, and they were dancing with a passion that was missing from her life. Suddenly they stopped dancing and Bella addressed her: "I cursed you, because I was jealous of you and Justin," and then Justin who was standing there and was silent said, "I liked you Camila, but you never saw me. You were always busy with your crystals. I told Bella about our night out and your love for candies. I told her I sang you a song. I wanted you two to become jealous of each other and fight for me!"

Camila woke up sad. She finally found out the bitter truth.

In some folk cultures and myths gemstones, jewels and crystals are not just for healing, some really do protect you from supernatural curses. Nice take making them sentient.

Your story is intense and engaging. You did such a nice job of building the characters, the scenario and the conflict(s). The outcome is not a totally happy one, but the resolution to the story is well done. This story is successful because it blends action, dialogue and narrative really well, and has a clear story arc — the things we look for in quality short stories!

This story gripped me, @poemsofasickmind. The scene with Bella giving her Camila ginger candy almost made me shout out loud, "No! Don't take it!" It's sad that Justin ended up with Bella. I imagine it won't last, since Justin will finally Bella is not a good person. and somehow Justin and Camila will end up together.

I was hoping Justin and Camila end up together too, but then I saw they are not suited to be together. They both need to learn some lessons in order for them to be together.
