Peanut harvest and drying process

Hello Hive

The season to harvest ripe groundnut/peanuts is here just like we harvested corn after over 3months of planting, groundnuts as it is called here spend about 5months

In order to know if they are fully ripe, we uproot some and check for the maturity of the seeds.

IMG_20221016_152007_339.jpg

In other instances the leaves turn from yellow to brown and then they begin to rust away that is just another way to know if the groundnuts underneath is fully ripe

Harvesting groundnuts is one of the most boring farm work I have ever known.
After uprooting all the plants, you have to sit down and plug out nuts one after the other from the groundnuts root.

We uproot groundnuts, then keep them in piles under shade to escape the hot sunlight

Occasionally we invite our neighbors and friends to come and join in the sorting out of the groundnut as it is time consuming and boring.

Now we have bags of groundnuts at home
The next thing to do is sun drying to preserve the seeds.
Thereafter we store them away from family rodents....

We use groundnut to make soup, groundnut pap, groundnut cake and several others you may be interested to see...

Groundnut harvest is done, I hope you can still see that we have guinea corn left in the same plot of land we have used for mixed farming to maximize available land space

There is still work to be done with rice yam and beans, and these are also major farm work calling our attention.

oh, I love peanuts! I've never made soup, pap, or cake from them, but they are good roasted or in an Oriental-style stir fry with meat & veggies. Another popular way to use them where I live is to wash the whole nut (in the shell) to remove the dirt and then place them in a large pot of water, boil them for a couple of hours with salt, and then pop them out of the shell and eat them while still warm. They get so soft and heavenly delicious! I've cooked them that way at home, but it's such a popular thing here that roadside stands sell "Boiled Peanuts" as well. 😊

Boiled peanut is common here too... And sometimes we often eat half of the whole harvest before they get dried for storage. 🤓
I will share some pictures when next I make soup with then.

Thanks for stopping by.

The process to remove the shell and bring out the peanut takes some time hence here in India we say it time pass specially when we travel by train or local train. 100 Grams of Peanut with its shell can help to pass at least 30 minutes without boring.

Wow, that's such a good idea, I use mortar and pestle to pound and peel it out here

Wow, how wonderful. In Venezuela the cost of raw corn is a bit expensive, processed corn; roasted, salted, caramelized, nougat, etc, is much more expensive. I am a high consumer of peanuts, I love it!

That harvest you show was very good. Yes, it is very tedious the whole process to taste the delicious flavor, but it is worth the effort.

In the backyard of my mom's house some seeds were planted a few years ago, to everyone's surprise some of them bloomed and bore fruit. The soil must be very dry for them to grow. Or something like that.

It is very nice to work the land, it provides us with a large part of the food we eat. Many greetings to you.

Thanks dear...
Growing my own food helps me to cut down food cost and some expenses... I wish I can send you some peanut.

The weather isn't often favourable in most places for us to grow some crop just like in your place over there, that is the reason those food items are expensive in your place.

That's right. Other types of food are grown in these soils, such as avocado and mango. And they are very tasty. Beans and beans - I love them!

Thank you for wanting to send me peanuts, I appreciate the gesture.

Wow, that is really interesting! Looks like a good harvest. Do you ever grind it up into peanut butter? It looks like they need dry weather to grow, huh? Thanks for sharing the process!

I do grind and mix in sugar to make them into something like cake... Harvest was bountiful, thank you

Hello there. I hope you’re doing great.

I’m glad to be part of this community, because I learn a lot every day. It is in this community I learned the process involved in harvesting peanut. Before that time, I actually thought peanuts grows on trees😂🤦.

I love peanuts, especially when cooked. I also heard peanuts can be used to make soup, although I've never tasted it, I wish to try it out one day.

Groundnut pap? Does it look like the normal pap too? Or is it different?

(Edited)

Soap making is quite new to me but I get with the proteineous quality of groundnut it can be good and used for that... Its a bit different from the normal pap, something the hausa people love to drink...

You see groundnut eh, if you want me to love you, just bring it for me😂. I love it so much. When I am eating not, I love to stuff my mouth with it. It is more delicious eating it that way. I sometimes add it to my rice.

Well done girl
