Testing Out HiveAuth - This Is The Way

Being a part of the Hive community has tons of benefits. One of those many benefits is testing out new apps and features for the developers.

First time using HiveAuth

I first heard about HiveAuth at HiveFest I believe. I immediately was very intrigued at a new way to sign into applications using your Hive account. A few days ago, I saw this post about HiveAuth testing and figured I'd give it a go. I have to say - I love the experience. Hive Keychain is great and all but HiveAuth seems to be much better. Obviously it's in very early stages still, but even as it stands, it is superior in my opinion. The first thing I noticed was that it's already integrated into the Hive Keychain app on mobile and PeakD. I can't wait to see more applications like LeoFinance and even games like Splinterlands add support for this awesome authentication service. It eliminates the need for an additional browser extension to log into your favorite apps. Let's check it out by signing into PeakD.

It's incredibly easy to use! You enter your Hive username just like you would if you were going to log in with Hive Keychain extension. Then it will generate a QR code. Once you see the QR code on your screen, you click the QR button in the Hive Keychain app on your phone.

If you're signing in on your phone, you can just click "Sign in with Hive".

When you click the QR code button at the top of Hive Keychain app, it will open your camera with a box to scan the QR code. I scribble on mine just in case.

Once you scan the QR code, Hive Keychain app will ask you to Approve the transaction. It also allows you to set how long the sign in session is good for. This is a great feature! Security is very important when you're dealing with crypto and this is just another layer.

For example if you happen to be using a device that isn't yours, you might opt for the 1 hour sign in. If you're using a device that you use all the time, you might opt for the longer sessions like 1 month. After approving the sign in, you're done. It's that easy. No passwords. No browser extension. Just a QR scan with your phone.

When broadcasting transactions like commenting and posting, you will be prompted to confirm the transaction with Hive Keychain app as well. Yet another great security layer, and you can set it to not prompt again for certain types of transactions. It will automatically approve that type of transaction until your session has expired, which you set earlier. This service is going to be a game changes once it starts being widely implemented into other apps. I highly recommend that you give it a go and share your experience. The more feedback the developers get, the better they can make the experience for users. Do your part and participate in the testing!
