Congratulations to the winners

The thought settled his heart and soothed his nerves. Whenever his stomach clawed, he felt for those bright red threads, mystical and all-reaching in the sky. It didn’t fill his belly, but it kept him focused on moving forward.

Count me in, please

“You have a hunter’s nose, then?” Mossa said, arms uncurling from a complicated knot from behind her head.

Thank you!

The path Mossa took, on the other side of the river, was rocky, twisty, and bumpy. He hoped they had orders to move at a regulated pace. He thought he could make it. He could get there close to the same time they did. There was plenty of fresh water to his left and he knew a few Seedwind drops on this side of the Rainroot that should provide him with provisions. But he knew he was going to miss his slinger when it came time to rest for the night—and he wasn’t sure he had time to be hunting with his shortsharp or cudgel.

thanks

But by the fourth day, his body was near its limit. It was difficult to keep a solid pace, and he had to cut down on his trips to the river since the witchpath veered northeast and got farther and farther away from the Rainroot.

What persistence !!

As he got closer to the drop, he looked for little nicks and notches high up in the tree branches. The Seedwind had many signals and signs, some warned of caves with beasts or vipers, some guided the way to Point Starfire, and some pointed towards the hidden supply caches.

June risked a look back up over her shoulder. She couldn’t see the shoot-lead, it was too dark and the lower boughs of the tree were too thick. But she let a single low flash of blue light come from both her eyes—a silent thank you. It was probably meaningless to the Falsesparker, but Junelight found that her words were stuck.

Count me in! Ty 🙏

This is my favorite part

There would be food (and even weapons) at Point Starfire. He sat in the shade around high sun, watching the gaps in the sky grow bigger, weighing his options. The detour would slow him down and take him a little off course… but he was slowing anyway. And the shade of the woods would be welcome indeed.

“Wouldn’t know,” said Mill. “Don’t know ya much but you’re certainly not singing any songs or regaling me with tales from the Seedwind. So based on current observation, and current outcomes—that being me falling asleep—I’d say you’re less boring than a rock but probably would lose to an affectionate hopjack. I’d rate you as… boring as a good cloud.”

I love a lot about this character, but this exposition on the level to which Frix was or wasn't boring was really funny and quirky, and it resonated with me. I love how you make likable characters, even when they aren't central to the story. !PIZZA !CTP !WINE

Cheers man! Mill's a goof, def fun to write. I like to write by the idea that "Every character is the main character—in their heads." Helps to add depth sometimes I find :)

“You can never be too careful, Mossa,” June said, keeping her gaze level. She knelt down by the roots of the tree, pretending to be interested in a clump of dim, glowing mushrooms. She extended her senses, scanning for any nearby crystals. They were clear.

Mind made up, he broke from the witchpath to weave towards the outpost. The hopjack runs were numerous, but his flagging energy kept him slow. As the sun started to set, he resolved to see if he could find one more Seedwind drop. His own group had stashed a few in this area and he remembered that one of them had fatty preserves and snares.

This is where the character feels himself desperate for a drop to be found, and then he realizes the dangers, but at some point he feels determined.

Nicely inflated scene with chaos, desperation, and determination. @jfuji

My entry

“I ne’er… I ne’er said they can’t dance seed,” argued the first scholar. “Imma juss concerned thems in a fight, I don’t think it’d be good to be stuck with one.”
“You really think there’d be a fight though?” asked number two.
“Well sure! Wouldn’t you fight, buncha apes like Hodder here…”

Congrats to the winners and have a great vacation.

Just finished Ch3.2 and liked this quote:

So when he felt a subtle shift in timbre, Frix stopped dead. Maybe it was a halt in birdsong, an errant snap of a twig, or a rustle that came out of sync. Either way, he crouched low, all too aware of his failure as sentry the night before.

This time my quote is from the last chapter published, waiting for the next part of the story :)

Why else would Swinn go up the cliff rather than around? Speed. Something was happening, Frix could feel it. Had the attack started? There was really no question about what was going on now… just a matter of how and when. He had to try to catch his fellow Seedwind. And the only way to do that was to cut straight through the camp.
Frix hesitated for a second, watching the boiling crowd below. Then the image of a swinging cudgel came to him, followed by a cry cut short as blood fanned in a smooth arc. He swallowed, and climbed down.

Also, shared on twitter :)

My line favorite

He was able to tackle the next day with renewed purpose. The food made a big difference, but it was the conversation about fighting witches and bloodlust that really propelled him. He had to dodge around several more groups, easy for the most part as they all seem
