Are we the frog?

I decided to attach this post to the #SilverBloggers group because I feel that they will see the same thing that I do.

How to BOIL a Frog

I remember learning this theory in college.
If you put a frog in boiling water, it will jump out of the pot.
But if you put it in cold water and slowly increase the temperature, it will eventually boil.

This is a little lesson in acclimation. When changes take place so slowly that we tend not to notice or not bother with them.

I have noticed over the years that many routine products have been reduced in quantity without a reduction in price. Manufacturers just figure that the average consumer will not notice.

Yogurt used to be 8 oz and now it is 6oz.
A half gallon of Ice Cream is now 1.5 quarts.
And the list goes on.

This brings me to last week.

My wife and I were working on a project that required moving some objects that were mounted on the wall. I had removed them, patched the holes and prepped it for painting.

My wife saved some paint from our original painting project just in case.

While getting ready to paint the area, I just happened to notice that the gallon of paint was only 127 oz. which is one ounce short of a gallon.

This got me thinking

How much money has a paint manufacturer made with this little change.

I quickly searched for how much paint is sold in a year in the US.
The answer I found is 750 million gallons.

So now for a little math.

Let's say Joe's Paint Company makes 100 million gallons of paint

-If they skim 1 ounce off of every gallon that will give them an extra 784,401 gallons of paint.

Let's say Joe get $10 a gallon for his paint wholesale.

He is now making an EXTRA $7,874,015.00 all for nothing more than skimming off an ounce of paint.

In case you were wondering what happens with that missing ounce of paint.

Until next time,
John Novak

I feel as if jumping out of the pot before it boils, just means the chef will grab us and put us back in with a rolling boil and put the lid on. We're cooked either way!

"A half gallon of Ice Cream is now 3 quarts." ??? Aren't there 4 quarts in a gallon? You are right about the shrinking sizes. They are everywhere and everything. Thanks for sharing the "shrinkflation" news.

Sorry, Bob, You are right. I need to correct that.
The ice cream is in 1.5 quarts instead of a half gallon.
Thanks for keeping me in check, lol

Wow. The same thing with planned obsolescence. Nothing lasts very long anymore which is such waste of materials. The main aim of most/all? industrial businesses is to return as much profit as possible so this is what happens.. But if they are falsely advertising the quantity on the packaging, that is a legal issue, I'd imagine!

Yeah, I guess they are not calling them gallons anymore. They are advertising them as can. The problem is with the older adults; we just assume it is still a gallon.
It is marked in small letters on the back of the can that it is 127 ounces, lol

Oh gosh that's a lot of extra money that companies make sneakily!
On the other hand we hear a lot of news about cost rises/gas/Ukraine and so on, retailers can't increase the prices anymore or risk losing their customers... Sneakily reducing the content may be their last solution...😫
Thank you for sharing John.

Very interesting points brought out on this post. Most probably do not notice the change/s or we simply take it for granted. It is great to be reminded to be mindful of our purchases as we are actually getting less than before and yet paying more. Happy weekend!

They're sneaky, John. It's funny how they can do that and although we take notice, we cannot complain because they made it in a damn smart way, lol!

You are right, @ifarmgirl.
My can of paint is like two years old, so I am not sure how long they have been doing it.
We do tend to take things for granted.

Some good points John. In times like this they are reducing pack sizes and increasing the prices as if we wouldn't notice. It's very frustrating when you want a specific amount of something like paint to play these games.

Yep ... I have seen that as well ... 16 to 14 ounces is common. One can consider it that manufacturers are cheating us, but also, monetary inflation is hitting us, so they are passing their inflation problems on and we are getting hit TWICE.

I take this as my reminder to seek to lead a quiet and peaceful life ... creativity costs relatively little and increases abundance, and I pay more on those things that are essential but not on the things that are not, for my joy comes from things that are not of the system...

I agree, Deeann, I do not feel it is necessarily done to cheat us and I do realize that all these costs are constantly going up. I find it crazy how they do this under the radar.
Thanks for the comment, I really appreciate it.

I remember being in elementary school and having my teacher go on an on about olives and airlines.

Feels like cheating...

Yep, I've seen that in many products and also wondered just how much the manufacturers are making by doing that! Very cunning I would call it!
