Call It Extravagant, But This Is the One Luxury I’m Not Giving Up

As individuals, we have one thing we hold dear, something we can’t easily let go even when it seems extravagant or unnecessary to others. For some, it’s shoes, perfumes, clothes or gadgets. For me, it’s something that has become part of my identity and confidence. Letting go of that lifestyle, no matter how costly, feels like losing a part of myself.

Many people find it hard to cut back on what makes them feel alive or beautiful, even when times are hard. In my case, what others call wasteful, I call it an intentional self-care and that’s where my hair story begins.

There’s one particular thing about my lifestyle that makes it feel extravagant, and it's my hair. I have long been told how the beauty of a woman is found in her hair and how the way they take care of their head is very important. I also understood something very crucial, and it is that we should always take care of our creator; we were made to know that our head directly leads to the creator, and it must be taken care of.

Growing up, I never knew I could be much more intentional about my hair and the kind of styles I make it into, which ends up making my beauty come out the more. This is the reason I would search online for the latest hairstyles to fix not minding how much they would cost me but when something looks good to me, I go for it.

I love it when I get nice compliments on my hairstyles and how it makes me recommend people to my hairstylist because they want the same style, too.

When it comes to my hair, I give it total care and attention, and because of this, I spend a lot to give my hair an amazing look. And the funny part is that I don’t use an attachment or weavon twice; just once, and I throw it away.

At least it was easier some years back when things were still cheap and life was better, but now, with the cost of living and prices going up each day, it makes people wonder how I could still keep up with doing my hair not just any, but going for the expensive attachments and then just wasting them on my head, only to lose and throw them away after a month or two, when I’m satisfied and I feel the need to make a new one.

My friends had warned me several times not to live my life that way because it was obvious I spent a lot just to make my hair. For them, they can reuse an attachment more than twice, leaving them to save money for other things, but not me. When it comes to treating my hair, I do it with all simplicity, even though it’s kind of extravagant for me. But I have never for once bothered about it because I used to survive it.

A neighbour of mine where I lived was surprised when she saw how I used to throw my attachments or weavons away because I told her I don’t use them the second time, and she begged me not to do so but keep them for her anytime I make my hair.

Something I do with this extravagant lifestyle on my hair is that once I have done my hair, I tend to start saving little by little for the next few months when I’d do a new one, and that doesn’t make me feel like I am wasting money unnecessarily. I like to look good with my hair, and hardly would you see my hair without being made, because I hate to comb my hair as it gives me a hard time combing it.

Another thing about this lifestyle is how I also tend to go to the salon to lose my hair, even if it’s short or not much. Sometimes, it’s not about being lazy but just feel the need to do that. One thing about this is to help others, even if it comes with them doing a service for me while I pay. Some people need money to survive, and so, doing this is like me helping out in my little way.

My hair is my beauty, and I’d choose to spend extravagantly on it than on anything else because, yes, investing in myself, especially through self-care, is a step toward personal growth.
