Hive is a Too-Closed Community, or Why I Feel Weird Creating Content for Non-Hivers

Hello everyone!

We all know that one of the unique, most interesting aspects of the Hive Blockchain is that we, users, are rewarded for creating content. And we also know that these rewards are distributed according to the value it creates to the community itself, and this "value" is measured by the votes your content receives from other users: the more/larger votes you receive, the higher your reward payout will be.

However, this system presents an unique challenge: it can be weird to write posts for non-members of the community, considering that it's the already-members of Hive the ones that vote (and remunerate) your posts.

Let me write this again, but with other words.

Usually, on Web2, you're creating content to attract NEW people to your blog/site/social media page. That's kinda obvious: if more people find your content, you'll earn more money (through ads, through affiliate marketing, etc.).

But, here on Hive, it's different. "New" people (people that isn't currently a member of the Hive Blockchain) can't make you money, as they don't have a Hive Wallet and don't have staked HP. The only people that "really matters" is people that's already part of Hive, because they're the ones that can vote on your content. We're incentivized to create content for people that's already on Hive, not to create content to attract new people to Hive.

The consequence, at least for me, is that I feel weird creating content for non-Hivers and posting it here on Hive. And it's not because I'm afraid of "receiving less rewards", it's exactly the opposite: I feel weird receiving rewards for a content that I'm sure that no one on Hive cares or understands, and that people are just voting on it because either it's automated (hello auto-trails), or because people just trust that the content I'm doing is "probably good" and goes with the flow (as they have no knowledge or interest on the subject to judge the quality themselves).

"STOP goddamit talking about these shitty stupid goddamit games that no one plays!" - you folks, probably.

For example: I'm currently kinda addicted to a mobile game called Uncharted Waters Origin.

I would love to create more content about the game as it's a really new game and there's almost no content about it in English (it's a Korean game, so there's some stuff written in Korean).

I know that this content that I would create would be indexed on Google and would end up attracting a few gamers to it in the long term.

I know that this could be potentially good for Hive as these gamers could end up being interested on Hive and all that jazz. But it's just a possibilty, who knows if it'll actually attract someone...

So I end up finding strange to get rewards from hundreds of votes from people that doesn't play Uncharted Waters Origin, doesn't care about Uncharted Waters Origin, and doesn't have a damn idea if what I'm talking about the game is true, correct or even useful.

Am I the only one who feels that?

Thanks for reading this post, and until next time!

Well, i feel the same, such a dilemma, haha

Interesting points!

I think it's worthwhile writing about whatever interests you and then you can always tell non-Hivers with the same interests to come read the posts. Maybe include a link to how to get onboard, in case someone would be interested, same as you'd include a link to a game you write about. And while I'm sure there is a lot of auto-voting going on, there are also people who'd upvote a good post about a game they won't play, simply because it's interesting and well written.

Yes, this is a serious problem. I think many of us recognize that the problem exists, but solving it is another question entirely. Given a decentralized reward system, any solution must be sybil-resistant, which is harder said than done.

I agree with you @demotruk, you've been doing so much research and experimenting about this problem, I am just a beginner here but I'm starting to learn it based on my experience with Web2 blogging.

Maybe we could find ways to address this problem here on Hive.

I was caught up with your statement @luizeba that says "I end up finding strange to get rewards from hundreds of votes from people" that doesn't play the game or doesn't care about your article.
