When Fun Turns Sour: A Childhood Lesson I’ll Never Forget

We all love to have fun and would do anything to delve into that state that brings out that adrenaline within us, as we find those things exciting. Through my life to date, I've been privileged to delve into a lot of fun activities, and I must say that I do enjoy them. Just like the popular saying, "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy," the play in that statement is what brings out fun and makes us excited at the moment. In line with that, there are some fun things we've done that we ended up regretting because in the end it turned out to not be really fun, maybe because of the outcome of the decision or just because it's not something ideal, and today I'd share one of my personal experiences with you.

Talking about one of the fun things I delved into and later regretted doing and would most likely not do again, number one on that list is an experience that has lived rent-free in my head for years, right from my childhood days. During my childhood days, even till now, we all know in the spirit of celebrating the Christmas and New Year festive season lots of people would like to light up a knockout and throw it, just for the fun of hearing its sound and seeing the colorful light it displays in the sky. I've always admired this when others do it and wish to do it myself one day. Unfortunately for me, things went south the very first day I threw a knock.

I'm sure you'll be wondering what could have positively gone south, asking questions such as, "Did I get injured while trying to throw it, or perchance did I get someone else injured?" Well, none of that happened. What happened was that on that very day my two childhood friends were there to encourage me to throw the knockout, but sadly for me, panicking to quickly throw away the knockout before it makes a sound, I mistakenly threw it into the pocket of the policeman coming behind us. He, in turn, quickly panicked to get it out before it exploded in his pocket. Immediately after he did that, he and his friends grabbed my friend and me and angrily beat us before taking us to our parents.

On getting home, they reported to one of my friends' parents, who in turn beat us once again. After him, the other friend's mother also called us over and once again beat us mercilessly. At that point I was literally tired and was already thinking my own parents would do the same to us once they learned about what happened, but thankfully they weren't at home and never got to learn of it; if not, their own punishment would have added to the lot we already received. From that day I made a vow within me never to go near a knockout again, not to talk of trying to light it or throw it, and to date I haven't gone near it again.

Even though now I'm an adult and know no one can punish me for throwing it, still I don't buy the ideal again, because now I see knockout as a waste of money and resources that could have been used for something more important, given that once you're the knockout explorer, your money is gone and so is the joy and fun one derives from it. So that's about my experience of doing something fun that turns out to not be fun anymore, as it runs sour.
