THE ART OF MODESTY
To talk about modesty we have to understand what it entails and it's virtue. Modesty is that quality that individuals possess of not being too proud of themselves or not being over confident in the abilities they possess. There are different context at which modesty is being applied and it differs depending on individuals and what they perceive in their hearts.
The concept of modesty in this 21st century is very relevant though there are different interpretations that varies significantly based on personal beliefs and culture. Some view it as an outdated ideal which has lost it relevance in a fast growing generation where individuality and personal freedom is celebrated, others still see and believe in the respect and confidence it symbolizes extending beyond clothing enclosing both behaviour, self expression and words.
Many adopt modesty as a personal journey that is tied to their faith, values and even self perception as individuals experiences different understanding of it. However, when it comes to modest fashion, that concept is experiencing a global growth as it expands significantly showing it's influence.
If we are to compare between the traditional view on modesty and the modern view, we will be able to understand that the former pride themselves in covering sensitive part of their body and showing respect for others, while the later argue that such ideology has decline in modern society especially in the fashion world which is growing with alot of money being invested in the production and procurement of luxury items highlighting it's economic relevance to the society.
Beyond clothing in this generation, I believe some people have been able to integrate modesty not only in how they dress but also the actions they take, the way they speak and even in their behaviour. What constitute modesty is not universal, because in some cases there are cultural diversity involve with differs widely based on cultural context and also individual perspectives.
Recently I saw a lady dressed so elegantly and beautiful in a dress that was jaw dropping and required attention, I stood there just looking at her but mostly my attention was on her dress because she was able to incorporate modesty into the current trends, that offers stylish and comfortable alternatives that don't require her to sacrifice her personal charm or creativity.
In the spiritual dimension and many religious contexts, modesty has been linked to inner spiritual path and character reflecting one's commitment and values. Emphasise on personal freedom where one can express one self as they chooses is in contrast to traditional modesty as some people view it to be restrictive.
Modesty is not applicable to one field alone, it can be seen in our emotions, behaviour, dressing, speech and character. It is a thing of mindset and it differs from one person to another.
