I Heard And I Cringed

I remembered a woman I knew and took as my role model some years ago. She stays around my area but a little but not on my street. She wasn't not too close with anyone but we knew just enough about her and her family.

She comes to my street to buy things from traders around and sometimes, she buys things for children around too. She is well educated, dresses smartly and she's very beautiful with a lovely family.

"Oh how I longed to be like her when I grew up", at least that's what I always told myself back then.

Then, one day she asked to buy some shea butter from my mom. She always buys from from my mom and takes it with her but that day my mom didn't have any at hand.

My mom pleaded with her to exercise a little patience as she was going to bring in the new ones she had ordered the next day. Since the woman didn't need it urgently, she paid and my mom promised her that I would bring it over to her house the next day.

The following day, after my mom got back home from where she went to get the Shea butter, she immediately cut out the one the woman paid for, packaged it and asked me to deliver it to her.

When I got closer to the side of her house, I could hear this woman's voice. She was on the phone. She was laughing and talking which indicates she was speaking with someone close to her.

I never meant to listen in on her conversation but I didn't have a choice. I believed she was speaking to her friend on the phone and didn't realize her voice was a bit loud.

I don't know what they were discussing prior to what I heard but from what I gathered, they were probably talking about men, husbands in general.

She mentioned something along the lines of.."she doesn't mind cheating with a married man".

I was shocked to hear that. I quickly knocked to announce my presence. She came out to see me and I greeted her before handing her what I was sent to give her and left immediately.

I pondered on her words on my way back home and I shook my head. What could she probably want to do with a married man? She is married herself with three children. She also has a good job as an accountant.

She and her husband are rich. I am not saying super wealthy but well enough to support their home. Their children attend good schools. Her husband dotes on her, at least that's what we see from the outside. I don't know whatever problems they have but it shouldn't warrant her saying she doesn't mind destroying another woman's home.

As a person who came from a polygamous family, I can't even begin to express the problems we the children faced when another woman came in. The attention, love and resources were divided unequally and things never remained the same.

"Why would a woman who should understand the problems that a mistress would pose on her family and her happiness be the one who wouldn't mind doing the same damage to another woman's home?"

After that day, something changed within me towards her. I couldn't bear to meet her eyes any longer. Whenever she came around our area like she used to, I would simply greet her out of respect but I kept her at arm's length not that we were close or anything before but I used to always greet her with smiles on my face and sometimes even proceeded to hug her but after what I heard her say that day, I stopped all that.

She probably noticed or not but if she did, she didn't say anything about it. Whenever I see her and her husband driving around in their car, I just shake my head because the husband is oblivious to his wife's dangerous thoughts and fantasies or maybe that's the way they've chosen to roll in their marriage and both of them share the same views on keeping a side attraction while being married.....hmm whatever.
