NEVER AGAIN

I have aquaphobia (fear of water/ drowning), I do tell people apart from cooking, drinking, bathing and washing I do not have any business with water at all, I was not always like this it started one day when I was 6-7 years old, so anytime I go close to a large amount of water or even crossing through a bridge I always felt what happened when I was six to seven years old will happen to me.

It was a sunny day and as usual I told my mum I am going to her friend's house to play with my friend (my mum and his mum are friends 😂) so I went to Dele's house to play with him, he was my best friend and as usual we went out playing in the neighborhood and all these was after my mum has warned me sternly of things to eat, where to go and when to come back, all these plenty instructions ended with yes ma. We continued playing in the field for a very long time, until Dele said he wanted to swim of course I joyfully followed him to the river close to their house(it was very close you could see their house from the riverside) not without my brothers accompanying me like bouncers ready to pounce on anyone that crosses my path.

Dele don't go too deep I yelled at him, but he did not listen he just laughed it off and gleefully jumped into the river, played for sometime and came out of the water. Dele let's go home it's getting late I told him, my elder brother too joined me in telling Dele it's late but he refused and went into the water for his last swim and that was truly his last swim ever because he died in that water. My elder brother ran home to tell his mom that Dele has refused to stop swimming and come home and she quickly ran down with a cane in her hand only to met me there screaming my lungs out calling his name, I screamed, yelled, called and even whispered for the big head to come out of the water, but there was no response.

I went home crying that night, infact I cried for days unending, on the third day after so many divers had searched for his body they found him floating out from the middle part of the river with his whole body swollen. Fresh outburst of emotions and tears overwhelmed me and I let it flow, I cried because there was no more Dele, no more my best friend, I was so heartbroken that I vowed there and then not to ever go close to water be it a stream, river, swimming pool or whatsoever. A very shallow grave was dug and Dele was buried there 😭😭😭. Continue to rest in peace Dele AKA Dimkpa.
